I can’t help but feel Halo 5 is gonna be alot like crysis. I’m talking slide ability, stomp, thrusters taking down your energy. I’d rather have custom loadouts than that. Idk man I just don’t know, lucky there’s a beta. Hey when we were getting h4 news and gameplay I hated at first but grew to love it, h5 maybe the same.
Do you care if Halo took from crysis (pretty sure it is)
I think it’s a bit harsh to say that these will work in exactly the same way to Crysis. Halo’s existing mechanics would affect new ones implementation, and I think that Halo was long in need of some new (gameplay-significant) mechanics.
one of the main complaints of armor abilities and one of the main reasons why people hated it is that halo was built to be an arena shooter, meaning that equal starts are an incredibly essential part of what made Halo well… halo and that giving everyone their own loadouts and perks and junk just made fans that grew up with halo that loved the way it was feel alienated.
Spartan abilities are an attempt by 343i to make halo into a fairer experience overall whilst not just scraping what reach/4 did entirely, it could work well or it could be awful depending on what kind of abilities that are in halo 5 and more specifically how they are presented and balanced within the sandbox, I think overall I think its a decent compromise that will (hopefully) unify the community more instead of dividing them like what Reach and 4 did.
as for the comparison between crysis and halo 5 I find that silly based on such little information, even if that were true it doesn’t necessarily say whether it is good or bad, its important to note that tons and tons of games have copied halo (including CoD) and that has overall been a good thing, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
If “Spartan abilities” turn out to be “Crysis abilities,” we’ll have a whole different problem on our hands. I really hate the modern trend that is making actions automated by taking control away from the player and making him watch an animation.
Yeah I got that impression from the trailer, but it was just a trailer. I’m not against a slide mechanic, just not sure about a lot of other Crysis themes. I don’t want everyone having camo and a shot shotgun in their load out either. Oh wait…
Vaulting and climbing mechanics is fine too to a point. The core gameplay should not change from its inception too much.
I’m more concerned if Locke is going to be the only playable character and chief gets sidelined in H5.
But Crysis kinda took from Halo…both the increased armour and the invis are quite similar to the power-ups of CE, aliens, guy in a suit.
All games take from each other, I’d be fine with Halo increasing the amount of actions the player can preform as long as it isn’t at a detriment to it’s gameplay like AA’s were.
I also don’t want Vanilla Halo back. It’s fun, but if a game was released now as a new IP with Vanilla Halo’s mechanics etc, I probably wouldn’t buy it. Halo needs to move on - every other big series has gone through changes as it progresses, obviously not all of them good. But if Halo is to survive it can’t stagnate and rot away in a corner, it must continue to change and evolve.
The problem we’ve had is that Reach started changing the formula in an less than fantastic way to say the least, 4 perpetuated that and now 5’s going to have to start from ‘scratch’ in that regard.
Why not have two initial playlists, one that doesn’t have sprint or any abilties, just the weapons, grenades and vehicles with the classic halo gameplay. The other playlist has the gamemodes with sprint and the abilities along side it. And in custom games sprint can be turned on/off. Just as AA use can turned off. I also found a mod for halo 4 that turned off sprint.
But ever since sprint appeared in reach that was the only AA I really used. I don’t want sprint to be removed but I also don’t want the community to die down so this option should attune to both.
I think some of the additions like sliding and ledge grab are nice but I hope that there won’t actually be an air stomp.
Air stomp was really, really annoying in Crysis 2&3 because it only required the player to be above the enemy in order to kill. Even if it was “worse” in Halo 5 so that it can only kill enemies with no shields, it would still be annoying because it’s still a “press a button to automatically kill”. Plus the only way to counter it is to either shoot the enemy quickly or be in as high position as possible.
Air stomp was a risky move in Crysis because it had very long recovery time but it was still a free kill. It wasn’t fun to have someone end your killstreak by doing a random air stomp. It was frustrating since it didn’t feel like the enemy deserved the kill just because he was above.

What if it does AOE damage, but at max only enough to break shields. When they hit the ground, there’s a recovery time. If the stomper lands on you directly, they get an assassination.
If it can’t kill an enemy at all with the AOE, I don’t see a problem. But if it’s possible to kill unshielded enemies with the AOE, it would be annoying.

You do realize that Arena Multiplayer originally played a lot of verticality, right? Most of the games relied on height advantage, and OG Halo used verticality to a completely different degree than it’s following titles. Height advantage still played a role in the subsequent Halo games, but it wasn’t as obvious because the hit boxes for the players heads were made larger and easier to hit.
I do agree that it shouldn’t be a “press button. get kill.” mechanic if it is really even in the game. I would like to see it be more in the sense of how the other abilities like dual wielding and boarding were. You had to be in a specific position to actually perform the action. So you can’t just spam the ground pound if you are trapped. You would have to fall a specific distance before you have the option to perform the ability and maybe you even have to be behind the opponent in order for it to actually kill in one hit. If they are facing you, it would just strip their shields.
My overall thoughts on what we’ve seen… I really don’t see us having a sliding mechanic, but assassinations are already in, they will probably stay, the ground pound thing will probably be a thing… but I’m not against them. They are all equal and I would like them over AAs and Sprint.
