Don't reward me for playing poorly

Halo 4 is a different game. It’s not Halo 2, it’s not Halo 3, it’s not Reach. With over a week since release, many of us have learned this first hand and either accepted or renounced this fact. This isn’t to say that Halo 4 is a bad game, because it isn’t, but there comes a certain time when the player base needs to accept that creative decisions will never agree with you 100% of the time. That’s not to say you shouldn’t voice your opinion. 343 clearly has heard the issues our community has taken with H4 and will try to please as many players as they can. I’m writing this to clearly express what issues I personally don’t agree with. I’ll preface this with saying I’ve played each Halo extensively, and while this doesn’t necessarily give more weight to my opinion than that of someone who’s first experience is Halo 4, it gives you the reader some insight to where I’m coming from. Lastly I’ll say I have enjoyed my time with Halo 4. I’m glad Halo is still around and the Universe and community are moving forward. People reading this may enjoy some of the features I find distracting. That’s perfectly ok. All that I ask is for you to contribute something more than “-Yoink- then we don’t need you here.” or simply tell yourself I’m an idiot and ignore me. Let’s begin.

Rewarding me for playing poorly.

The first time I entered a LAN tournament for Halo 1, I was still using the AR. If you’ve never played Halo 1, then understand that’s about the dumbest thing a person can do. More hilarious still, I saved up the $15 needed for the entrance and was knocked out the first round by users whose 3 shot pistol kills couldn’t miss. I left beaten and disgusted with myself but my eyes were opened. I started to use the Pistol, and I got better. Not right away but by the time Halo 2 came out my mindset of how the game was played was significantly different. Balancing problems aside with Halo 1, the lesson to take from that is even though getting your can kicked sucks, it’s a learning experience. Halo 4 has taken some of that away from the community.

Regicide is a big example of this. How many times have we seen players win their match with a negative KDR and tool of destruction as the Assault Rifle? Not that the AR is a joke anymore and all AR users are noobs, but it’s still frustrating to see players rewarded for playing somewhat silly. I don’t want to be told I did a good job when I played like crap.

Infinity Slayer further promotes this through Ordnance. I’m not saying Ordnance is bad, it has some flaws, but I don’t mind it as much as most do. What I do mind is players being rewarded for being shot at and being saved by a team mate (Distraction Medal) and points for assists seem to be given out much too liberally. Theoretically it’s possible to earn a Binary Rifle through distractions and assists alone. Rarely the case, but it can happen. The point I’m trying to make is it doesn’t encourage the player to get better.

Spartan Ops is also somewhat silly. What is the point of a mission where you cannot lose? I don’t want to sound like an old fart ranting about how “everyone get’s a medal” but this is a little ridiculous. Is essentially become an XP farm fest. To pick on someone else besides Halo 4, Reach also did this with unlimited lives in Firefight, which always annoyed me.

I’ve reached level 64 (yeah… too much time on my hands…I know) and the honeymoon effect is beginning to wear off. I enjoy playing with my friends but when they’re not on each victory or loss seems hollow. 1/50 matches come down to a difference of 5 kills in the end, and even those don’t feel exhilarating as much.

These were my feelings, feel free to comment, or tell me I’m not a true Halo fan if it makes you feel better. I left out some other things that bother me because at this point I still believe 343 will fix the bigger issues that others who have more passion than myself have brought up.

TL DR: Reward me for playing well. Humiliate me for playing poorly. Thank you.

Sorry but I have to ask did you actually read my post? No where in it did I say a lack of a ranking system to be the cause or solution to this problem. It’s a simple matter of the multiplayer team wanting to make each player feel like they’re contributions matter, no matter how insignificant. That has nothing to do with the ranking system in the context of my post.

Unfortunately for competitive Halo players (you’ve gone or are planning to go to a tourney), you don’t bring in new fans to the franchise by humiliating them. Simple as that. It’s difficult/impossible to enjoy a game when you’re getting owned. I think the decrease in the rarity of the Assist Medal is a choice by 343 to make sure new players know that even when they don’t kill somebody they’re still accomplishing something. It also promotes team shooting better than the old method (if you don’t know to do it anyways) because you get an assist for only hitting a guy 1 or 2 times before he is killed. Personally I appreciate the infinity slayer option, because I can enjoy a weapon that would be much more difficult to obtain if they were pickups. It helps someone who is unfamiliar with the game still get the thrill of blowing someone away with the rail gun or disintegrating an enemy with the scattershot. In my opinion, 343 made casual gameplay more enjoyable and rewarding while leaving the option for more competitive play. Casual gamers don’t want to feel “beaten and disgusted” when playing a game. Halo is never going to be as brutal as it once was, simply because brutal gameplay (especially multiplayer) doesn’t attract a whole lot of people.

Oh and the Regicide thing: It’s just a more complex formula of the K/D spread, while you’re the King you have to get the bonuses while limiting other peoples Regicides. I’m not sure I like it but there will probably be a regular FFA soon.

Good points. You shouldn’t be rewarded with a “generic kill” medal, it’s like giving a 3rd grader a ‘gold star’ or a ‘good job’. just insulting. and shouldn’t be rewarded for dying. death is punishment.

No, I didn’t. It was far too long. I got -Yoink- to do…

I don’t intend for it to sound like a rant against casual players. Not everyone is driven the same and we all play for different reasons. I just feel the system is somewhat flawed and doesn’t do players a service in the long run. Totally agree with your point there. Hard to market a game with a high degree of skill needed to play and yet have it remain enjoyable at the same time.

> Unfortunately for competitive Halo players (you’ve gone or are planning to go to a tourney), you don’t bring in new fans to the franchise by humiliating them. Simple as that. It’s difficult/impossible to enjoy a game when you’re getting owned.

this is it. well said.

also, i believe when you win you should get significantly more xp. this is the reward for owning.

OP: I agree. The game feels pandering and as though there are bumper pads lining the entirety of each chunk. MM has some major flaws that end up diminishing any sort of skill gap, Spartan ops only requires that you have your controller turned on, and Campaign, while visually striking, is more of a chore than difficult. Being a Halo player that is in the middle of the pack skill wise, it’s frustrating for me to feel these things at my mediocre level. The “Generic kill” medals are ridiculous. I’m sad that pretty much every armor set can be unlocked through XP, rather than having the majority based off of accomplishments. That seemed like an AWESOME idea, and I was really excited to see people wearing diff. armor because they had earned it, rather than having to discern the minute differences in paintjobs to see if they had their baby brother get them up to level 48, or had killed 5,000 spartans with turrets.

343, challenge us. Bring the pain. We want it.

As for bringing new players to the franchise, there is a big difference between adding to the numbers, and replacing old fans with new blood. Bring back social playlists. Create the balanced fighting that the competitive community is asking for. Let us tear our hair out in frustration, because overcoming adversity is far more worthy than any fake medal will ever be.

Distraction medal- I am proud of my distraction medals. I run in, kill an enemy, run away with low-shields, and draw my pursuit into a friendly ambush.

Announcer: Distraction!

In my head: 2 enemies down. Boo ya!

As for assist medals. I’m glad to get that little reward when I help a team-mate out. Sometimes I take shots knowing I won’t get the kill and when I get that assist, the game is telling me that my shots may not have given ME the kill, but that I helped out, and that the game recognizes that.

Assault Rifle- Not a horrible gun, even in high rank play. I’ve got a 1.8 in Slayer and I use the Assualt rifle for about a third of my kills. It’s situational.

I found myself saying the other day “It doesn’t matter if we win this game, I’ll still get enough XP to rank up”

I slapped myself. A progression system that rewards you for everything is just insulting.

you should still get xp just for playing you should just get more for winning. no reason to punish poor or young players. they paid just as much as you did for the game.

so…by your logic, if someone is not a good player they should never be able to advance beyond level one? God forbid the horror of someone playing just to relax and have fun instead of trying to feel superior in a meaningless game.

good thing you dont make games or you would go bankrupt before you ever completed it.

Really Halo 2 and Halo 3 would love to chat with you. Bad players should not be rewarded for being bad. I’m so sick to death of these new age give me players it makes me want to quit gaming all together.

Look life sucks, it’s hard and if you want something you have to work for it. Games are the same way. There is a winner and a loser for a reason. They are competitive and the object is to try and win. Everyone should start equal and randomness should have no part in the game. The problem is society and game developers like 343 believe everyone should have a chance. No the lazy, unintelligent player who refuses to learn how to play the game right should not be rewarded. In Halo 4 they are and that is what makes this game a joke.

But go ahead keep believing this game is competitive and balanced real players have already left and more will follow and this game will be a ghost town just like Reach ended up being.

YES! If someone is not good enough they should NOT pass level 1. look at Pacman or Space invaders, if you suck at them you won’t pass the level. They don’t say “Oh shucks, you tried buddy. Here, go to the next level”

No, they play the most negative sound effects as you watch your character die, and then you start the entire thing again.

Games are meant to be a challenge. Challenges are fun. These days, games are just interactive movies.

Halo 3 and Halo 2 were full of boosters, lag switchers, derankers, etc, etc.

I saw numerous people on Halo 3 that had more than one account to play on. They’d have their 50, then they’d either derank themselves or start a new account just to kill “noobs” again. I don’t blame Bungie and 343 for removing such a ranking system because all it promoted was asinine try-hards. In Halo 4, bad people still lose and good people still win. Lazy and unintelligent players still lose.

Also, what is all this hate towards randomness in Halo 4? I remember randomness being a huge part of Halo 3. Getting killed by traffic cones, or fusion coils that get launched out of man cannons, or a rocket being bounced back at you by a gravity hammer. Randomness has always been a part of Halo.

what makes you think ALL people think like this? what makes you think only people you approve of should play a game how YOU wish? how arrogant.

The dictionary.

game/gām/
Noun:
A form of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.
