When looking at the Halo Encyclopedia on page 109 it says “On Earth and among the Covenant rebel fleets, John-117 is eulogized as a hero. Monuments are erected in his honor and while many believe him dead, others continue their search for him even decades after his disappearance” Notice that is says decades after his disappearance. That is at least 20 years. Either this is something that was written before 343 decided that Halo 4 is going to be set about 5 years after Halo 3 or does it mean something else? I do not really know, but it could mean that Master Chief gets stuck on Requiem or even dies there.
Also, this is in the book version of the Halo Encyclopedia. And it has a forward form Frankie.

Impossible.
The encyclopedia is a bit, eek, on canon.
Dude that’s the end of Halo 3
Apparently THN and the Halo (online) Encyclopedia are sometimes off canon.
Wasn’t there something said in the remember trailer of Halo 3 with the old Marine talking?
On the book it says it was made with information from 343 and the Halo Bible.
Publication Date: September 19, 2011. Plus 343i said they were working on Halo 4 since 3 years ago I think

Maybe John stays on Requiem for about 20 years until Halo 6. Or he gets stuck in a shield world. Or even stays with the Forerunner Prometheans as their reclaimer. Because the text only said humans and the UNSC were looking for him. And what about the Spartan 4s? Were they first classified and then all died or get lost with chief?
IDK, i want to explore Requim and it’s secrets but i also want to explore more of the halo universe. I’m sure 343 knows what to do.
If anyone hasn’t read Glasslands…spoiler alert:
In Glasslands time went by a lot slower I think when Dr. Halsey and the Spartans and Mendez were on the shield world. Maybe decades go by when Chief is on the shield world. But really I think it’s just non canon.
Maybe it’s time for a new encyclopedia. =P

Wasn’t this because the Onyx shield world was in slipspace and thus out of our normal zone of space in time?
No. Requiem get stuck with Master Chief.
It’s always subjected to change, they are not always accurate. Usually Halopedia is on.
