He knew cortana for less than a year (not counting the time he was in cryo), I doubt there is going to be a game about him trying to bring her back, and if that is what chief has gone AWOL for, I will be greatly disappointed in the new lead writer.
On topic, no, I doubt he cares. He did’t exactly grow up in normal standards.
He is a man on a mission. Nothing else matters. He didn’t care what the captain of the infinity thought of him (the captain when Lasky was a commander). That guy was a superior to John, but that didn’t stop John from doing what needed to be done.

I for one really hate his change of connection with Cortana. They went from friends to lovers in a painful process. If 343i wanted MC to be depressed about about losing someone Cortana should surely be on that list but so should there be another 500 people. Especially someone like Johnson who he seems to just forgotten.

Johnson is the reason he want cortana back, he promised him to never let her go
He probably only cares about how his reputation will help or deter him from accomplishing his goals. Beyond that, I’m sure he doesn’t care at all as he has almost nothing in common with a normal average person. Probably doesn’t have an approval-seeking bone in his body.

The connection between Chief and Cortana is something that isn’t even possible between two humans… so comparing John’s relationship with Johnson to his relationship with Cortana is like comparing Walnuts to Watermelons.
Soldiers die. It’s just part of war & the Chief knows that. Losing Cortana was like losing a part of himself (literally) because John’s & Cortana’s consciousnesses were directly connected on a regular basis.

Losing cortana was nothing, he has witnessed far worse in his career, and with him only knowing cortana for months I doubt this impacts him. If it does, I have lost all hope in the story of halo.
They are not lovers, and he certainly did not lose part of himself.
