Look, I’m generally not one to complain, but does anyone outside of america actually play infinite anymore?
I live in Australia and the ping times are an absoulte joke
I jumped back on after taking two weeks off right?
playing at 9:30pm QLD time so surely there-should- be other aussies playing, right?
First game…300ms ping
Second game…260ms ping
Third game 250ms ping, join in a JIP game to a team losing by 30 points and spawn in at the very same moment I’m sniped…
fourth game?..Well I’m playing something else now aren’t I?
Honestly, its like 343i doesn’t want people playing their game, these games are unplayable, the desync is bad enough on low latency servers let alone connecting me to european servers for christ sakes…
Server Selection should have been a thing at launch, so at least there is a healthy population in most centralized regions. Right now though? I worry if there even is a population left for Server Selection to work without making people wait 5mins for a match.
A few armour pieces just don’t interest me and I am happy just going on Stellaris instead.
I think once Tatanka or Season 3 comes out I’ll see what’s up. Although I am going to keep an eye on the store in case that Cortana emblem goes back into the rotation. Because you know, 343 doesn’t want to take my money.
But honestly, this shake up at 343 has me rethinking a lot. I am not sure they will carry on with Halo Infinite. Iam not even sure they’ll continue the story of Halo Infinite. There will definitely be the temptation to have a clean slate.
I try to play from Japan, but it’s just not worth it. Oh, I’ve been killed 7 times in a row this game by people who shouldn’t be able to see/shoot me? Nice.
I may play once in a while (e.g. a couple of hours per month) but it’s not a fun enough multiplayer game for me anymore (being an old Halo CE and Halo 2 & 3 player) and I think there’s very little chance that it’ll become fun for me again, unless the new leadership’s gonna be full of surprises. And I really mean it - should be FULL of surprises.
Having Forge (i.e. plenty new maps, game modes etc.) and a custom game browser would be a great step, but it’s not enough for me.
Various mechanics must change or return and the game should undergo a major facelift regarding visual and sound effects:
Explosions should appear and sound impactful and not be lame effects that quickly disappear. For example, there should be lots of smoke for frag grenades and big ground scorch marks.
The announcer should be some giga Chad. Can’t remember right now, but I could swear I’ve heard a kid sometimes.
Dead bodies should stay around longer and not quickly disappear.
Vehicles should be stunts-material and shouldn’t be lame. For instance, the ghost and warthogs cannot even climb up a short platform or pavement, and the Banshee is a discount Banshee from Lidl / Walmart that’s unable to fly in circles and take really tight turns.
Bullet decals should be more visible and not disappear before I can snap my fingers. I need to be able to tell that a battle went on when I am passing by a place or entering a building. Drawing stuff with my pistol on the walls would be a nice bonus too. But how to feel like there’s a war going on when I see no bullet marks, no scorch marks, no dead bodies and…
No blood and/or blood pools? Well, that’s already a lost case, since they’ve T-rated the game.
There should be a chat. Another lost case, since they’ve T-rated the game and they don’t want to deal with any minors seeing insults. So because they want to have Teens spending big money in the Store, the game cannot be social. It’s really soulless and meh now.
There should be collisions. That’s the fun and realistic way as well.
Custom maps shouldn’t have lame boundaries that kill you.
Destructive weapons such as the fuel rod and flamethrower should return to satisfy my warmongery and aid in making a match feel like war, like a battle with stuff exploding and burning.
That’s just a small list of things that I’m missing and ruin it for me. I’m sure there’s more that I can’t remember atm.
TL;DR Halo Infinite feels too lame and childish for my grown taste since I’ve been accustomed to better and superior experiences in this franchise, but I might play it every now and then since it’s free.
This is because you live in Australia. Your population are quite spread out, plus you’re a long distance from other players because the games numbers are fairly low…so in order to get a match you have to deal with higher ping. Halo infinite uses rollback netcode, which should negate a portion of the delay issues you’ll see with higher ping traditionally, but you’ll still see issues in instances where timing is important (eg two players meleeing each other). Unfortunately the ONLY way to fix this is to increase the player base…so maybe when forge comes it’ll improve. 4V4 should be easier to matchmake too, so maybe avoid BTB for the mean time.
I’m in the UK. Search times have become notably longer in recent weeks, but im frequently in games with 21ms ping with very few being in higher numbers. This would support what I’ve said above and seems to match with experiences like mint blitz.
The most you can do about this is:
1./ to do a bit of research to find out when peak time is for the azure server you want to connect to and play around this time.
2./ Alternatively, and think about this if you really want to keep playing, you could play via game streaming. As long as you have a decent connection to your router (wireless 5ghz band or wired only - I’d recommend the latter) your connection should improve because you’ll be connecting to a console that is much better positioned globally to your own. Worst thing about this would be input lag, drop in resolution (1080p), and frame rate being 60/30, but the actual game may well be at a higher ping and you may find this more playable than local - especially if you prefer BTB to 4V4
I don’t know if point 2 will help…but I think it is worth trying. Digital foundry did a comparison of local VS xcloud years ago and said ping was better, with the main issue being input latency. It would make sense that, in a game, a virtual console would have lower ping with the server since it is technically the server…you’ll still have the input delay though and, depending on where your console instance is based, this could be better or worse based on locality. Maybe try it out and see if it works as a plaster for your issues until the player base increases in size?
Not a networking engineer here, but sounds like you want to play and really can’t so are maybe willing to try anything?
Good luck and perhaps you could let us know if this makes any positive or negative difference as Australians are definitely having trouble in this game
