I was thinking it’s what used to be techsuit? Or maybe its where you go in the menu for wrists and other armor that still isn’t on what they have shown.
It appears to be what Gen of armor … or era. Mark VII was one option. Reach Mark V was another core, I believe (Gen II). Gen III (Halo 4 & 5 era armors) may very well be another.
So all the Reach-style armor sets will be of a certain core (Gen II Mark V?). All the new ones will be Mark VII, presumably. Gen III and maybe some Halo 3 throwback sets would be cool (Gen II Mark VI?)
And since core is the first option, it would seem once you select the core, all the relevant pieces pertaining to that core are available. So I imagine you can’t mix & match between cores. So no Mark V helmet with Mark VI chest piece? I’m not sure.
That’s what I got from it, if I haven’t confused my Gens and Marks.

Well, IMO, the Armor Core is the forearm guard, the shin guard, the boots and the chest piece (for exemple, here is the MK VII armor core chest and here is the MK V armor core chest).
This is what I deduced from what we have and what we see.

I really hope this is true. I really want H4 armor!

I bet they’ll save certain things for the battle passes. Reach is the launch theme. I bet Halo 4 will be later on.
It will be interesting to see if there will be different versions of the same armors. Halo 4 Mark VI and Halo 3 Mark VI? All the Mark Vs over the years? Will the new coating thing allow them to design a cool low res Combat Evolved looking Mark V coating? That would be awesome.

I like this idea, I wish they would touch on it soon.
The core’s role is the tech suit, chest, and connection points all on one. If it limits armor selection for example: reach with reach and new with new. I am not sure, after watching some break downs it seems you should be able mix and match all armor, but that remains be seen.

That makes sense. In fact, it makes more sense and is less confusing than how I interpreted it. So hopefully you’re right because that’s way better.

That is what I am thinking too. I find it strange to lump all of those together but have gloves and knee guards independently customizable. Not that I am complaining, I just think it is strange we can customize out gloves but we cannot customize our forearms independently from our chest.
I’m not sure what it means, but I hope it won’t restrict what armor / colour we can combine.

It also seems to affect the undersuit of spartan armors. Watching the gameplay overview closely you can see that some undersuits seems to be made of different materials. This may also be tied to that.
Based on what we’ve seen, it looks like the option to choose the base Spartan armour.
Given that legs and arms don’t have their own category, I would say they are chosen in this way.
