I like the story aspect of Spartan Ops but the gameplay itself wasn’t really anything special, as said before it was just kill enemies go there, kill more enemies go there, push a button, then kill multiple waves of enemies with unlimited respawns.
Campaign and Spartan Ops are the only things I can enjoy with Halo anymore.
Spartan Ops is basically a contextualized Firefight. Unlike FireFight however, it is boring because it removes any sense of imperilment. You have infinite lives and a 5sec respawn. It is impossible to actually lose a Spartan Ops mission. This devolves the experience into a monotonous shooting gallery. On top of that the characters are shallow, underdeveloped, one dimensional stereotypes, and, aside from the unforeshadowed twists and deus ex machina moments, the plot is simplistically straightforward and largely disconnected from the missions that you complete as a player. This calls into question why they even bothered to contextualize FireFight in the first place.
FireFight was fun because it was about survival and teamwork. Working with your friends as a cohesive unit and reaching the 4th Set was satisfying because it was an accomplishment. FireFight hasn’t delivered this experience since its inception with ODST. Reach’s FireFight was a wacky, customizable mode about high scores and rank ups. Fun for awhile but boring in the long run. Halo 4’s Spartan Ops is the greatest devolution of FireFight that the series has suffered. It is a stale mode that has even less re-playability than its predecessor due to repetitive dialogue and a complete lack of customization.
The only thing that Spartan Ops added is a story, and due to the inherently disorganized, multiplayer nature of the game mode, that story was oversimplified to the point of being unpalatable.
If Spartan Ops is to be salvaged in Halo 5, it must find its own identity. Halo 4’s Spartan Ops tries to be Campaign and FireFight at the same time and the result is a train wreck of gameplay and story. If FireFight makes a triumphant return as its own dedicated game mode, than I believe that Spartan Ops will be able to truly spread its wings and evolve into an entire, secondary, co-op campaign, one complete with fully developed characters, story, and gameplay elements.
To me Spartan Ops was very enjoyable, New story CGI episodes every week, Progressive based missions. Though I wish they wouldn’t reuse so many MP levels for missions, that kind of a let down.
But overall Spartan Ops was fun and enjoyable, also expanded the story.
Added story, can play without having to commit to a MM game if I have RL issues at the same time, allows me to continue to rank up.
FF was ok, this is ok.
> Campaign and Spartan Ops are the only things I can enjoy with Halo anymore.
This.
I am more of a campaign player, and now that Sp Ops is over, Halo 4 just sits on the shelf.
The missions are alright the first time but there’s no replay value after that. I only kept playing it to get to 130 faster.
Yes, it is a much more evolved version of FF, much smoother, better AI, and an objective. It is 10 times better. At this point I’m literaly having more fun playing SO than MM. MM is so stale (it hurts me to say that).
I loved Spartan ops, but i would have liked to see ODST firefight come back. Reach’s was too easy. Also Spartan Ops should have limited lives.
I also don’t, it seems like a cheep version of firefight with a story to it.
I’d rather have firefight.
I like Spartan Ops, but it’s the best when I play it with my brother on split-screen or with friends from XBL. PLaying with strangers isn’t good idea, connection’s just too bad.
I don’t like Spartan Ops and I don’t like the enemy commendations from it as well.
I used to love Firefight Limited in Halo: Reach. It is pretty much all I played in my last months of that game.
When spops season 1 was finished my H4 playing dropped by like 90%…
No…
- The story is uninteresting and impossible to take seriously
- The gameplay is genuinely poorly designed (die all you want etc.)
- Revisiting the same areas you have played countless times before
- No longevity whatsoever
- Levels are short and lazily threw together
- It is an enormous gimmick and easy way to grab attention which = $$$
I found Spartan Ops beyond poor. So poor in fact that I had zero motivation to play after somehow finishing first 5 episodes. I never did and never will. Firefight had its issues in Reach but was infinitely better than the joke that is Spartan Ops.
I like it, much better than reachs firefight, then it has those firefight moments. I like it mainly for the added story
I really love the CGI in the cut scenes but I dislike how the variety of the gameplay is mostly pushing buttons and holding positions.
When Spartan Ops was announced I was fantasizing the types of missions like underwater, space battles, and big -Yoink- land battles. But instead, we get this. I also don’t really like how Spartan Ops ended, it was to abrupt and cheesy for me.
Overall, Spartan Ops was a replacement for Firefight, and all the missions are pretty much what we do in Firefight. I enjoy SO better than Firefight but Firefight has a lot of potential to get better.
I dont, the gameplay is so boring. The only worth thing are the CGI scenes which I can easily watch on youtube. Firefight was so fun ):
Spartan Ops is a good idea, put out in the wrong way.
In all honesty, if I wanted a small map with some objectives that only require me to kill (only played the first 5 chapters before xbox live ran out. Can’t play them without live, which is a little stupid), I would download an ai map for Halo Custom Edition.
If they actually put time and effort into making the objectives and stuff like the campaign, then it’d be good.
There were a few moments where spops did shine in the way it’s being displayed, but in all honesty, there’s still too much room for improvement.
As an episodic campaign, it was great, and a nice addition to the Halo franchise. However, as it was delivered, it had no replay value, mainly because of the unlimited life pool (no fail), but also because of the removal of points, scoring, medals etc, even as options.
I would like to see a Spartan Ops season 2, but unless they add back some of the core firefight feature-set (limited lives, chance of failure forcing team-work, scoring, medals, randomized waves, etc), then it will be the same thing all over again - enjoyable playthrough once or twice, no replay value after that.
If 343 wants to keep the active player base up, they need firefight back or firefight’s feature set back in SpOps. If I’m back in Halo 4 playing FF, I might wander into some of the other playlists to mix it up, but MP and SpOps as they are now won’t draw me back in on their own.
If they implemented a few “Sandbox” levels, where you could customise gametype option like FF, (especially generator defence, I loved that gamemode) I would be happy. Although I love SpOps, and enjoyed episode one, and 6-10.
