Look at it this way, if Microsoft never advertised the game so heavily to be competitive would you consider it competitive? Afterall Microsoft is the one who declared that Halo 5 was competitive, not the community. They basically jump started the whole Esports thing with Halo 5.
I feel that if there wasnt any advertising claiming the game was competitive, then there wouldn’t even be a pro scene in Halo 5.
The only reason I state this question is because I saw this video from ex-Halo pro Flamesword, and in that game they were playing competitive Halo 4 (crazy I know), and honestly it seemed that game-play could rival if not, even be better than Halo 5 in the competitive scene. I surely felt more exhilarated watching that then most Halo 5 tourneys, and they weren’t even playing for anything, just a friendly scrim.
It has ranks and it matches you based on said ranks. More competitive than Halo Reach and Halo 4 at least.
Getting the first the shot off is not competitive in my eyes.
Anything can be competitive if the players play it that way. Not everything can be skillful, which is mainly up to how the game is designed.
So to answer your question, is Halo 5 competitive? Yes. Does Halo 5 have a high skill-ceiling? No.

I dont think thats all you need for a competitive game. In fact thats not even a necessity.

Hmm I never thought of it like that.
When I think of competitive, skill heavily coincides with that thought. So I guess I should re-phrase that statement, do you think Halo 5 is skillful? And do you think there would be a competitive scene if the multiplayer was never heavily advertised to be just that?
Anyways I totally agree with your statement.
Whenever I try to Arena and Chill it never works out well.
If H5 is competitive then Hillary Clinton is fit for president.
Halo 5’s competitive/hardcore playlist feels too casual. Give us BR starts, no radar, no Sprint/abilities, custom forge maps like the old Onslaught, and up the placement matches to 50 to get placed, and we might have a truly high ceiling “MLG” Halo eSports option. I think that Halo 5 was trying to blend the two, but you can’t do that. You need to separate casual and hardcore. Just my thoughts.

No I don’t think Halo 5 is skillful, all I see in arena are spawn campers, and weapon pad campers, it’s sad really, sure Halo 4 had ord drops, but it impossible to camp the drops because they dropped in different places every time. All in all no, I don’t think there would be a compitive scene if Halo 5 wasn’t advertised that way.
It had the largest eSports prize pool for an FPS, and it utilizes skill-based ranks and matches you in accordance to said ranks. That’s a little bit competitive.

It had the largest prize poll because of Microsoft and skill based ranks mean nothing.

Had the largest Esport prize pool because of us buying req packs. MM does a poor job of matching fair games. If a diamond can match a champion then the system is flawed. Also ranking now is just based on how much you play. Not truly how skilled you are anymore.
The skill gap is noticeable in previous halo titles compared to this one.
All and all a pro game has AR and radar it’s not pro in my eyes. Even most pros don’t like it but they deal with it
You and your enemy begin with the same weapons and opportunities, everything else is a skill and little luck sometimes. So Yes - Halo 5 is definitely competitive game. Try Titanfall 2 or Destiny - the players have different weapons ( sometimes more powerful than yours) and unknown power ( super) that make you to lose from much more unskilled player than you.
