This is mainly intended for players who use Default controls
When I first saw the default control scheme in Halo 5’s Beta, I nearly cried. They’d gone for a full-on Call of Duty layout, with Zoom/ADS on the Left Trigger rather than the Right Thumbstick as per tradition. This caused many issues for me, as I couldn’t get used to aiming with a trigger in Halo. So my brain was all like, “Okay, just play it like CoD.” This worked a little, but then I couldn’t handle descope on a CoD-style control scheme.
It was also impossible to crouch, as it had been mapped to the Right Stick in place of Zoom (for the Ground Pound). I’m not certain, but I think Frags were mapped to a Bumper as well (don’t quote me on that). I scrolled through all the available schemes (so I thought), and none of them were any better.
So basically I spent all of my Day 1 matches dying incessantly, choking and wetting my pants as I kept confusing the Zoom and Crouch buttons. It was completely unplayable, and I was going to just delete the Beta until someone told me I’d missed the “Halo 4” scheme. Once I got some familiar Halo-esque controls on, I was topping scoreboards and was able to get some enjoyment out of the game.
So my question is: Were you able to play the game on Default? For me, it was completely unnatural and made me fight too many instincts to focus on the game rather than my controller.
I personally found them to be a better CoD-scheme then CoD. Well since nearly every other FPS uses the exact CoD scheme it was nice to see a better variation on that. I however didn’t use it that much since it felt a bit weird for me since I’ve used Bumper Jumper since Halo 3, which worked great in the beta, and even better now that they remapped the Ground Pound to your melee instead of crouch button!

The problem with that is, as I said, I don’t think they’d ever get used to being descoped every time they get shot and having to re-pull the trigger to ADS again.

That’s VERY nice to know. I had to lose the ability to effectively Ground Pound to be able to crouch, which would put players like me at a minor disadvantage.
Can someone please tell me why someone at 343 thought it would be a good idea to make a control scheme that was exclusive to twitch shooters such as CoD and Battlefield until the MCC the DEFAULT controller setting in H5?
If that isn’t a blatant attempt to bring in people from other games I don’t know what is
That being said I play on bumper jumper so it doesn’t effect me
I’m a Southpaw gamer who has come to rely on bumper jumper for the perfect control set up. My only concern is that by using this set up in H5G the sprint and boost are on A and X respectively, this makes it almost impossible to use those abilities whilst moving unless I use some fantastic thumb gymnastics which would also put me at a huge disadvantage in a combat situation. I am hoping for fully customisable controls, but by the looks of the leaked menu video I’m going to suffer.

I’m hoping for this with the elite controller as well
I switched to what is now called “Universal Reclaimer” when Reach launched. Before, I used “Recon”. So in the beta, though I tried the default, I had to very quickly switch it to the “Halo 4 / Universal Reclaimer” scheme. I also tried it in the MCC’s “Universal Zoom & Shoot” and couldn’t do it.
Which is weird, because I play Farcry a lot and a wee bit of Destiny from time to time, and those games pretty much use the exact same control scheme as Halo 5’s default / Universal Zoom & Shoot, and for some reason, I just couldn’t do it. I was all over the place. I kept thinking “Farcry … grenades on the bumper, stupid” but I couldn’t get in the swing of it.
So why can I hop between Farcry 4 and Halo using completely different schemes without a hitch, but when I make them the same, I get all screwed up? Here’s what I think it is: Halo, since 2001, has been right stick zoom, left trigger grenade, and (since 2010) right bumper melee. Farcry & Destiny can be completely different, and I can play them without any trouble at all, but once I see and hear “Halo” it’s left trigger grenade & right stick zoom. It’s now habitual and/or instinctive.
