Do You Know What Really Irks Me?

When users don’t use quotes appropriately.

By quoting someone else’s post when it’s actually just right above their own. For example, the first reply to this thread quoting this post would be improper. There’s just no need.

While it’s certainly nothing that I will lose sleep over, it irritates the hell out of me when I see it. So please try to avoid this my fellow Reclaimers. It’s especially bad when users get into a long discussion with each other and quote massive paragraphs between each other, when it’s actually just them exchanging posts between each other. The thread then becomes ridiculously long to scroll through.

Please only use quotes when the post that you’re quoting has been separated from your post by another post. And have a nice day. Thank you.

For those that want to keep this discussion going, and would struggle to talk about their angst about quotes, what else irks you?

I only do it when i talking to a certain person. Only whens theres alot of posts in one thread.

Thank you for not quoting the OP haha. xD

Do you see how nicely this thread is flowing so far, because of no quotes? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with using quotes, but so far, they’re unnecessary in this thread.

Don’t you mean…Urk’s you?!

Oh…wait…that’s right…Urk is gone…343, you must kidnap Urk and get him to join your side! We also need Stosh, I need someone to blame.

OT: I never really got annoyed by that, but right now what annoys me is the fact that I can’t watch the Halo Fest Live today, because IGN vids don’t work on my computer.

I agree, only quote what is necessary for your own reply. What irks me? Well, people that don’t know Halo fiction all to well but insist on telling me other wise. I got every novel except Cole Protocol in my brain! Also people that smack their lips whilst eating/chewing.

Also when I hear my fellow Americans slandering soccer as a boring and dull sport. I mean, our team isn’t good so we can’t talk. And how is a sport that is boring and dull bring about 1/7th the planet to view the World Cup? /facepalm

I quote when there’s a lot of activity on a thread and i want to respond to one individual post or person.

I picked up the habit while posting on bungie.net, the forums get very hectic so it’s not always clear who’s addressing who.

I’ll try to cut down though, I promise.

I’ll admit it’s not so bad here and there. But when there’s a build up of quotes, threads can become really long and then I have a sadface on. xP

If any of you do cut down, even slightly, I’ll be happy anyway. Thanks.

Mmm, I can totally understand why you would want to do that. When there’s a lot of traffic it’s difficult to maintain some conversations without quotes. My advice would be to quote first and then edit your post after (if your post falls right below theirs, just save some space and remove the quote).

I generally quote someone if I want to address them/their post specifically. Often times if you don’t quote then it’s confusing who you’re talking to, particularly if it’s a general statement (I agree, or something like that). Otheriwse, when addressing the general topic (such as now), I don’t quote anything. Quote mountains, though, those irk me. I try to avoid those whenever possible.

The only problem I see. Is that you don’t always know where your post will land. I could think I am the first response but really be 5 deep by the time I hit submit. I agree it would be cleaner and more appropriate but I am not sure it would be practical to leave quotes out.

True this.

The only other time I ever feel like quoting someone is if I feel the thread is moving too fast for me to get a quicker response than someone else. Kindof quick to call, but it’s always nice being the first one

Yeah, quote mountains and quote pyramids are bad. xP

Thanks for your response guys. I recommend quoting first and editing after, if you’re unsure about it. If quoting isn’t necessary, just edit it out. xD

Yeah, that irks me too. xP

What Irks me is when people team kill for the entirety of a Grifball match.

That’s one reason why I don’t play Grifball. xP

I do such a thing like this so I have a reference point to read as I type. If I can’t remember what I’m replying to, I’m not going to keep hopping back and forth between the post creator and the thread when quoting works just fine. I could delete it when I’m done, but it’s a matter of I don’t want anyone confused thinking I was responding to them when I wasn’t.

I do leave giant quote pyramids at times, but I usually try to delete a good chunk of it when it gets a little too long.

I don’t have an issue with people using quotes properly, that’s fine. But if your replying to someone who is right above you, is it really necessary? xP

I don’t really think so, but I use them for the same purpose even then which is why you may see them pop up every now and then by me :stuck_out_tongue:

> I don’t have an issue with people using quotes properly, that’s fine. But if your replying to someone who is right above you, is it really necessary? xP

honestly, it doesn’t bother me. i actually like when people quote who and what they are replying to because, like someone else said, it can be pushed down a couple posts by the time you hit “submit.”

i actually find it more aggravating when people post replies and you’re supposed to use your Magic 8 Ball to figure out who or what they are replying to. i also find it vastly annoying when the entire post is quoted but someone wants to respond to just one part of it, that i think is unnecessary.

I will say though, on other boards, with certain posters we took to quoting their entire OP and any subsequent posts that they would make because they were very liberal with their editing rights and left their flame suits at home. that was obnoxious.
