Yes you do. 343 hasn’t said why but my guess is that its a rogue faction. If you read glasslands there was a division among the elites one side against alliance with humanity the other side for

Apparently, you do fight some at certain points in the campaign.

Yes, you do. They’re the reason Cortana wakes Chief up at the beginning of the game.

Why are we fighting them? There are still a LOT of Elites who don’t like humans, and there are some who still believe that the Forerunners are gods. Either way, we won’t know until we play the game.
