Even though they aren’t augmented, Elites have never had too many problems knocking the 1000lb armored/augemented spartans on their -Yoink-. I mean, Gek Lhar himself apparently has killed multiple Spartans and keeps their dog tags. So, why are they just a bunch of cannon fodder in the opening cutscene? The covenant is supposed to be intimidating.
Inconsistent enemy strength has always been a problem. Its why Chief can struggle against one in FoR yet dispatch them easily in The Flood. At least Osiris had the element of surprise.

Yeah, speaking of inconsistencies, I was pretty pissed off when Palmer was one shotting Knights with magnums in Spartan Ops (which was confirmed non canon). The same guy who confirmed that (forgot his name) also said that Prometheans are actually supposed to be tougher in canon, but are weaker for gameplay purposes.

I believe it was Grim… It one of his Q and A sessions.
The Sangheili are not weak enough. Knock them down to tier 5…then I will be happy.

Speaks like that is even possible…
Apparently someone doesn’t remember the events from 2525-2552 very well.
No, people need to stop looking at elites like they are a magical perfect race of space samurai. If anything, they’re more like the spartan IV’s, there’s some really good ones and a lot of so-so ones. Gek Lhar likely caught a bunch of the so-so spartan IV’s by surprise.
Think of it this way, the Spartan II’s had extremely minimal casualties until the fall of Reach, and most of those before it were oddly enough to Brutes and Jackals. Part of this is likely due to the original FoR novel only having elites show up in 2552, but every other piece of canon treats it otherwise. So S-II’s were clearly taking down elites and barely suffering losses themselves, despite extensive deployment for 30 years.
That is not to say there are no potent sangheili. I actually think they are mostly portrayed the same as always. Sangheili may be physically equal or even stronger, but they seem to lose in gun battles. Osiris isn’t getting in fist fights with elites, they are shooting them. Both times Chief ever struggles with an elite are wresting/fist fighting, not firing guns. It’s actually remarkably similar to the games, where you don’t want to engage an elite in melee unless you’ve softened its shields up or have the drop on it.
You’ve also got to consider that technology has progressed in the Halo universe, humans have fought Elites for over three decades now, the Covenant is no longer the military powerhouse that it once was, and Elites are sometimes noted to be strategically inflexible and arrogant in combat. Humans are naturally going to adapt to fighting them – hence making them less of a threat.

I normally agree with your opinions that Elites are overrated and overrepresented in the canon. But regressing their society isn’t the answer.

Not to mention the Forerunner-Flood and Humans-Forerunner wars. The Forerunners devolved other extremely advanced races for daring to challenge their status as holders of the mantle, and thus made them bigger targets for the Flood when they returned. Their millitary lacked the stregnth to take of the Flood and it more quickly adapted to the Forerunner’s milltary tactics.
I think the only way to defeat the Flood towards the end of the series will be to cooperate with other races and set aside grievances. Devolving and destroying makes us no better than the Covenant or Forerunners during their reign over the galaxy.
I want back the good ones!
I believe in the opening scene they were that weak just to make the Spartans look like total badasses. If they were that weak in gameplay, I would stop playing on easy.
I think in the opening cutscene it was pretty bad how the Sangheili got pretty much demolished by those spartans, keep in mind how many warriors and zealots were just mowed down like grunts, they are meant to be a challenge not some enemies to just brush over. That cutscene also felt a lot like halo 4 because of how many high ranking Sangheili were there and just how easy it looked to kill them. Its quite sad that in halo CE Zealots were meant to be a challenge, but in halo 4 and by the looks of the opening cutscene in halo 5 they will be merely cannon fodder again. Im just hoping that gameplay wise they will be more of a challenge.
Keep in mind though the Covenant forces did seem to be occupied at the time so its kinda understandable they couldn’t really make a good retaliation against the spartans.
Each game is slightly different, same with stories. It’s just a matter of how BA Chief is feeling that day.
Technologically it seems like they’re falling behind. I imagine the Swords of Sanghelios warriors are much more dangerous than 'Mdama’s forces, due to superior training and equipment under one of the greatest military minds in Sangheili history.
I think they need to be shown as more competent and deadly in cutscenes. They truly are being portrayed as weak, and slow, when in canon they are anything but.
They do seem somewhat weak. I mean in Halo 4 Thorne was defeated by like 3 Sangheili…and in Escalation Thorne almost died to 2 Jackals (kek). I think I’d be more okay with their wrecking of Sangheili if these weren’t the best of the best Zealot-class.
I think its just Jul Mdama thats weak XD

I agree. The only problem I have with the Elites portrayal currently is that they do not look intimidating. I know the armor of the Elites we face in Halo 4 and 5 has its canon reasoning, but I’d still rather be fighting Elites that look terrifying and powerful, not like they have plates of armor glued to their hands/heads/mandibles. There’s way too much bare skin: I miss fighting Elites in highly ornate combat armor which looked alien and powerful.
Elites used to command an aura of exceptional authority, but now the ones we fight just look like the biggest brutes in the brute squad, and to me that makes them seem way too weak, at least compared to how they seemed in earlier games…
I will say I’m surprised how many random cinematic mooks who die have energy swords.
Not really.
Elites are strong, but there’s a lot of em, and they are fairly easily dispatched by higher ranking more trained Sangheili. Honestly the lower ranks are probably a lot younger and weaker lore wise as well.
Also let’s not forget how intensely the gameplay can be modified with skulls. turning on LASO will be just as disgusting as always.
Yeah they do seem a bit weaker
