How is it any different then the OG shotgun melee combo… this is just replacing the same game play that always existed in Halo!!! But now it must be nerfed…
And if i recall correctly, the Halo 3 Mulcher operated in the same way… 1 shot then melee… it’s been a while, i guess i could be wrong about that.
No you’re right about the OG shotgun. I’d almost always shot and melee, but it wasn’t required. The Mauler did do one shot one melee kill just like the Mangler does now.
I think the main difference here is one of the common cases for people arguing for/supporting the nerf is that it’s a pistol and a tier 1 weapon that has high damage and lethality potential. Which is why I argue for it to be made a tier 2 to make it the mid tier power weapon it is/should be.
Making it a tier 2 weapon would be fine if there wasn’t already a shotgun/sword on every map that has the mangler.
There shouldn’t be two weapons that auto win close range fights like that. The game is better off in competitive with the nerf, especially since the maps the mangler is on (outside of bazaar) are asymmetrical, which would mean changing the maps significantly when that doesn’t need to happen. Weapon balance is good outside of some small blips, once the mangler is fixed.
Allow me to point you in the direction of Halo 3 The Pit. One end of the map has a Shotgun on both sides and the other end has a Sniper rifle on both sides. It also has one neutral Rocket at the front, neutral Invis in the middle and one neutral Sword at the back. Each main base area where the flag capture point is also has a Mauler.
The Pit is one of the most talked about maps from Halo 3. It had multiple CQC weapons, was very well balanced and fun to play.
The halo 3 shotgun and mauler aren’t useful in basically any situations on the pit. The sword isn’t even there most of the time unless you just leave your team out to dry and camp, or hold S2 without a BR.
Halo infinite isn’t halo 3. The games work very differently. You can’t take balance philosophies from one game, and apply it to another with completely different mechanics, completely different maps AND completely different guns.
As I look back at this I realize that both the Bulldog and Heatwave do the same Pop N’ Bop (1 shot-1 melee kill) as the Mangler. I’m also remembering that Ascend Hyperion did a video about the Mangler and he mentions that the original shotgun was broken down and parts of the function were spread out to 3 guns. Bulldog, Heatwave and Mangler.
By reducing the melee and allowing the Mangler to be nerfed as a result (Intentional or not), they’ve effectively removed one of those shotgun functions.
Bulldog: Close-Mid range faster firing shotgun with less per shot damage. Adding range and higher rate of fire while trading off high damage and point blank kill potential. (But you can still fire one shot and then melee for the kill which people would do all the time the original shotgun)
Heatwave- Close-Mid range slower firing shotgun with less per shot damage and bouncing hard light projectiles and controlled spread. Trading point blank kill potential for longer range and the ability to fire shots around corners for the low shield enemy kill or to flush them out. (Also one shot one melee kill for point blank, still lethal)
Mangler- Close-Mid range slug firing revolver with high damage and slower rate of fire. Trading range and speed for high damage up close along with the ability to do precision headshot kills. (Can fire one shot and melee for kill)
As stated in previous posts with this change the Mangler will no longer be effective at close range when you would melee. It will only be good for 3 or 4 shoting people and the "Pro"s have said that it’ll be best used to prime people for a BR head shot. Meaning that the Mangler will serve no purpose on it’s own. It will be an assist weapon. Taking the place of the Pulse Carbine and Plasma Pistol. Making the Plasma weapons basically pointless at the same time.
I think that they should pump up some weapons instead nerf Mangler… for example plasma weapons are really ineffective, more than all Ravager, but also other…
