In Halo 1-Reach, the Elites had a smooth leathery skin, you can see this very clearly when the Arbiter gets his armor removed in Halo 2. It was Halo 4 that introduced the reptillian style Elites with scales and the design returned in Halo 5, but in Halo Wars 2 the Elites seem to have their leathery skin back.

They’ve always been gator like reptiles. Originally they were even going to have tails! But that created problems for when they would sit in vehicles.

I feel as though that was represented well enough with the different skin tones of the Sangheili to where there were light gray, gray, and almost completely black skin tones, because as you so clearly pointed out Humanity has different races which are only clearly defined by their skin tone.

Originally they were going to have tails and horns, but neither tails nor horns are exclusive to reptiles.
If you play the classic graphics and really slow down to take a look at every Elite you encounter in the original trilogy, you will see they are far more fish-like (specifically similar to sharks and eels) than ‘gator’ as you put it.
Additionally, they were nicknamed “squid heads”, “squid lips” and “kalamari” by the marines. The Anniversary design of the skull and mandible placement completely contradict these nicknames that were so appropriate in the classic graphics.

People aren’t solely defined by skin tone. Meso, endo, ecto morphs. Different facial features bone and density. Tall, short, etc. I feel like a lot of eastern Asians are shorter than most western Americans. There was a tall hardcore grunt in a book recently.
For an ing reference for humans, Jorge was an absolute unit compared to others Spartans.
Ripa arbiter was ginormous compared to other elites. Even the arbiter is pretty big.

The split chin and squid head thing doesn’t mean they are fish. The squid derogatory terms are for there swept back fined pointy helmets and there mandibles looking like squid tentacles.
They are definitely saurians with shark-like skin as referenced in many books my friend.
While the kig’yar are called Jackals", it doesn’t mean they are dogs. They are reptile/ avian as referenced in game booklets and book lore and as seen in game.

These are semantics about nomenclature. Their design has obviously changed over the years and not for the better. Just compare a Halo 3 Elite’s hooves with a halo 5 elites feet.
They’d all look cool for Halo Infinite.
Elite Variations

While they’re not my favourite images, they do show quite clearly how consistent the Elites’ mandibles and skull-shape were in the Halo trilogy. It wasn’t until the release of Halo Reach that Bungie altered them, and then 343i altered them further in 4/5 and H2A. Notice how flat the H2A’s skull is; how high its eyes are; how forward, angular and ‘clicky’ its mandibles are compared the the original trilogy Elites? This picture perfectly conveys all the points I mentioned in the original post. Thank you!

They are still reptilian in nature. Thats why i replied to you in the first place. Not worried about there design changes. The semantics you mentioned have nothing to do with their species and why they are designed and look that way. There squid looking heads don’t make them cephalopods or fish. And the hooves also have nothing to do with the fact that they are reptiles. Though i do like the old feet better.
Also the wiki straight up proves the points I’ve stated.

Yeah the old guys lack readable expressions along with halo 4/ 5, hope they all make it into the game. The reach elite is the worst one but their armors and builds look more menacing. Welcome. I think the best ones are h3 and h2a
It would make sense for the eyes to face forward for a race of warriors.
I didn’t mind the H2A elites look, probably because I don’t look into great detail like this but I do agree that halo 4 and 5 have the worst designs by far.

It’s not about what “makes sense”. It’s about changing things that have remained consistent for years beforehand. Besides, there are just as many arguments for a predator race like the Elites to have sideways facing eyes as there are forward facing.

So then they switching back and forth would help to maintain consistency?
Predators that have any sort of reliance on their limbs and have a neck they can move survive best with forward facing eyes. I would say that the Elites fit these qualifiers.

I’d say the hw2/ h2a elites are here to stay based on the hybrid classic/ neo look of halo Infinite

Well I don’t know about anyone else, but I much prefer the H2A and HW2 Elites to the H4/5 Elites.
As long as elites are elites, I’m cool with that. I’m sure whatever art design they use will look BA in conjunction with everything else we’ve seen.

Me too. I wouldn’t mind the 4/5 elites for heavy weapon elites though.
I’d be ok with a new design based on H1/H2 but definitely not H3. To me that’s when they started to get ridiculous. They were hunched over and looked really goofy. I thought Reach got them a little better, I loved that they actually stood up straight.
