Since I don’t own an HDD, the game won’t let me go into theater mode or play firefight or campaign over XBOX LIVE. Why can’t I just use a flash drive? Is there some sort of patch I can download or do I have to shell out a hundred bucks?

Yes, you do need a harddrive for those features to work. Unfortunately, no one announced this fact before the game shipped, but it was quickly publicized after the game came out.
Many games have this issue. Its the 4g slim thats to blame. Its basically the new Arcade 360.
It’s worth the money.
