i was thinking of purchasing halo 5, but do I need gamepass to play online or is it free?

I think a selling point of the game pass is that the campaign is already free so Im pretty sure that would infer you can play MP without the gamepass normally.

Any online functionality requires Xbox Live. Xbox game pass is just a game pass, unless you get game pass ultimate which includes xbox live.

Owning the game on disc or digitally allows you to play the campaign only. If you have Xbox Live Gold on top of that, then you have access to all the other features of H5 like Forge and online matchmaking.

If you have Game Pass, then you can play the campaign. If you want access to all the other features, you need to also get Xbox Live Gold.

If you have Game Pass Ultimate, then you have access to everything H5 has to offer.

Game pass ultimate comes with online play, if you have regular game pass you need gold as well. It’s recommended to just get the ultimate version of game pass.

i’m pretty sure gamepass ultimate is the one that lets you play online along with having access to the gamepass, that’s what i have. definitely worth it, gamepass ult is 14.99 i’m p sure that’s gold + gamepass, while gold by itself if 9.99

That’s correct. I got the gamepass ultimate and includes Xbox live.

For play the MP in Xbox, you can get Gamepass Ultimate or Xbox live gold. On PC (Halo 5 Forge) you don´t need anything of that, but you can only play Custom Games.

Gamepass Ultimate will let you play online as it comes with gold. If you don’t have it you can play campaign solo but that’s it. Forge, custom games, and everything else bsically you can’t play. You can still get a normal gold subscription if you don’t want gamepass as well.
