I am for this as i would like to make use of the extra content rather take up space on my HD. It’s not fun knowing you have the maps and can only play them every 50 games.
If the War Games DLC isn’t required like in Reach, I’ll go ahead and not even bother with future War Games content for Halo 4.
Spartan OPs is up in the air as 343 mentioned that it would have to be successful for future seasons (which will have to be paid for). Nevertheless, you’d at least guaranteed to be matched with players with the DLC, so it’s not really a waste of money.
Ya, I find it really annoying having all the maps in Reach but never getting to play on them.
No. This is just a sneakier way of making sure you continue spending to be able to access full functionality of the game. If I don’t like the new DLC, I’m screwed because I can’t play most of the MP. Bungie realized this in Reach, hence one Playlist had DLC only. Yes, it could be handled better, but point is I should not have to spend more on a product just to continue to enjoy full functionality.
This is a great idea. Sorry non-buyers, but I feel that those who shell out the cash should be rewarded by actually getting to play the DLC maps in matchmaking.

The Reach route cannot be repeated again. I am sorry if you and others don’t like the DLC but what about those that aren’t so picky? I don’t feel like wasting hardrive space (let alone money) on maps i don’t even get to play half the time.
There is no sneaking to be done here. 343 is business and they will want to be making sure they can keep the player base around so they can make more money. There is nothing subtle or shady about that.
I find that integrating required DLC into core playlists (save for a few at first) and then eventually, requiring it for every playlist, to be an optimal solution so that players are guaranteed to play on cool new maps.
Besides, if you love War Games/Spartans OPs, there isn’t any reason why should opt out of not purchasing the DLC. You are GUARANTEED to play on DLC maps with my solution and while it may feel a bit cheap on 343s part, it’s a small price to pay. In the long run, it’s going to make your purchase worthwhile as in Reach i felt i wasted my money for the most part (sans Anniversary and FF).
Your solution would lead to more failed exclusive DLC playlists that would eventually be removed and hardly anyone would be playing on the War Games DLC maps since they are not required.
Why can’t we have an option like “Play only with people that have the DLC” or “Play with everyone”? It would be much better.
Also, when will the map pack be avaiable?
Yea it is getting on my nerves with Reach.
1/10 times i get a Defiant map. facedesk
WHYYYYYY 343? WHYYYYYYYY!
Jk still love you 343i
I certainly hope it is required, at least for most playlists. I hated not being able to play DLC maps in Reach after I paid for them, because I didn’t get back into Reach until a couple months ago, and by that time the dedicated playlist was gone. So there’s still a few DLC ones I never got to play in a MM game. Which really sucks, and was a waste of money.
Can you imagine if we never would have gotten the chance to play games on Turf, Relic, Containment, Terminal, Avalanche, Standoff, or Ghost town? Those offered some of the most fun experiences in their respective playlists/games…

Wait, so we should be punished for not wanting the DLC? That’s just silly. I don’t feel like wasting money on something I’m not sure I will like. If I don’t like it, I’m screwed. If I don’t buy it, I’m screwed. I understand 343 is a business, but I am 100 percent sure there is another way. 343 did say the first season of Spartan Ops will be free. Nothing said about the next few seasons. If they charged for that, that would be preferable as it’s not stopping us from playing the MP. Required DLC ruined my Halo 3 experience. I would hate for it to ruin my Halo 4 experience as well.
why not just have a mirror of every playlist so that there will be regular something and dlc only something? id hate to make it like halo 3 where you can only play maybe 4 playlists if you cant afford the dlc

Again, you are proving my point. Your view is that you just want to play on new maps. I’m looking at everything else. Not everyone is going to want to buy new DLC. At the end of the day 343 will be charging you to play MP. You played for the game, you payed for a Gold Account, You should not need to buy anything more just to play the game. DLC should be optional. Anything else is wrong.

Really? You can pay for the game, and a gold account (both of which are pricy) but you are saying players can’t shell out extra money (not that much btw) for additional content for a very popular first person shooter?
How is the Reach solution any better? The Squad DLC playlist only pulled 200-300 on good days and that was eventually removed (the same happened to the other ones such as Squad Battle/Squad Slayer, Noble/Defiant). Plus the fact that you really don’t see the maps show up in Matchmaking (it’s VERY rare) is just icing on the cake and thus, your purchases feel like a waste of money.
Post continues in next post
No, no, no… Even if people don’t buy the DLC, they should not be excluded from certain playlists. They bought the game, so they deserve to play in every regular playlist. I would be fine with an extra DLC only playlist like Premium Battle in Halo: Reach. It’s so stupid that you can’t play 80% of the playlists in Halo 3 just because you didn’t want or could spend extra money on the maps… If there will be a good system that matches people with DLC up with other people who have DLC then it would be all fine. The DLC maps should also be in the votes as frequently as standard maps.
Eh, I’m kind of neutral on this one. I understand the frustration of not being able to play on maps that are on a DLC which you bought, however I don’t think it will really solve anything. Even though map packs are only like $10, it would be a little unfair for those who bought the game, then can’t play many playlists because of this. Also just because DLC is required doesn’t mean you will get these maps. Maybe in the beginning, but after a while people will get bored of the maps, just like in Invasion. When the new invasion maps first came out, that’s all you would get, but now you get Boneyard or Spire a lot more often now. So it would cost people money and after a while, you will just get old maps. But, at least you would get a chance to pick those maps, and other times play on them, so again, I’m neutral on this.
I just hate DLC only playlists
I want to play normal MM and get some new maps every dew games…
continuing for the sake of not writing a wall
However, we are not going to agree on this issue. You have your opinion and i have mine. I was thinking of some sort of compromise. One that doesn’t require screwing over non buyers or the use of abysmal DLC playlists.
Perhaps require DLC in all playlists BUT for those who don’t have it, there will be an algorithm that allows non buyers to match up with other non buyers in those said playlists and DLC players with DLC players. That way, everyone gets what they want; No one is punished. The non buyers like you will still be able to play on the stock maps/forged variants and people like me can be matched with other DLC buyers (with the added bonus of having stock maps/forge variants).
343 did this in Reach but because the DLC wasn’t required in the regular playlists, the system couldn’t match players with DLC with those who did because of the majority of players didn’t have the maps. Why? Because, it wasn’t required to. Why waste money of maps you don’t like or not required to have? Of course if you are a non buyer this a godsend but this totally screws over the ones that payed for the content ;/. I think my compromise is a viable solution for both parties.
I would say make it required for “competitive/ranked” playlists, maybe things like BTB.
Its true if they are not required then what’s the point of getting them…
If i can’t play them outside of the DLC only playlists
Required? For DLC specific playlists then sure, but not for the general Matchmaking playlists (Team Slayer, BTB, etc).
Halo 3 did this and took things too far, it actually really harmed my experience with the game because even though I had all the DLC, I had friends that didn’t - so when we played together we couldn’t play on most of the playlists. DLC should add things on to the game, not completely take over the core experience. This also made it very, very difficult for me to recommend the game to other friends, because the DLC requirement deterred them.
But Reach was too far in the opposite direction, I don’t think I’ve played a DLC map in a standard playlist, which is unacceptable.
We need a middle ground between the two - I suggest a “Prefer DLC” filter for Matchmaking (similar to "Prefer Good Connection/Skill).
