I was a huge Halo 3 and Reach fan and while I’m still getting used to your game, I can say I’m also a Halo 4 fan as well.
I wanted to get opinions on a few things, if people agree with me that’s cool but I just wanted to see what other’s had to say.
Does anyone else feel like all of the maps are too big? Like Complex could make for a great BTB map, no vehicles just perpetual killing field.
That the landscape has changed drastically with everyone having access to the various rifles?
Halo to me is about close range or mid range fire fights, has anyone noticed that close quarters fighting has kind of fizzled out?
Is it just me or is it harder to land assassinations? I had 798 in Reach, I have like 14 in this one? Is it due to everyone having sprint or the lack of close range fights or the new AA’s?
A lot of the maps are very opened, in that there’s usually several ways to get into any room, does this make for better or worse maps?
Do you feel that the game is more or less tactical based on the new maps?
Te only beef I have is with starting rifles. They take so long to kill that a team mate usually cross maps the final headshot. You spawn with a lazer accurate rifle that can cross map. Spawns happen to close to teammates who are usually in combat. You HAVE to stick with a teammate or die by being double teamed. The aim assist and hitboxes make 1v1’s about who hits first and not skill because neither player is going to miss.
It’s definitely much less tactical than Reach or or 2 & 3, it’s just a case of who can pull the trigger the quickest,
There is no map control either, and the close quarters has definitely suffered too.
Yeah, since everyone can now begin with a Rifle, close-quarters combat is now near non-existent outside of shotgun ambushing.
They can have starting weapons be laser-accurate rifles that can kill from across the map. I can deal with that.
They can have ordinance drops that reward players with even more powerful weapons. I can deal with that.
They can make assault rifle spray-n-pray triumph over DMR/BR headshot accuracy at close range. I can deal with that.
They can have high ROF damage for all weapons, making shots to the body and limb be much more effective than it has ever been, and effectively closing the skill gap. I can learn to deal with that.
But what I absolutely cannot deal with is the very heavy aim assist and bullet magnetism.
Now that you mention it, yeah there is significantly less close quarters combat on most maps. Yeah aim assist is too strong, it was the same in reach too. I remember the first time I played reach I got 17 headshots with the sniper, then after a while I went back to halo 3 and couldn’t hit water if I fell out of a boat (I used to be pretty good with it back in halo 3’s time). It makes midrange and long range combat much less satisfying.
My favorite thing in the world was sword base in what me and my friends affectionately called the laundry room, which was that little room with the jump jet into it. We would hold it down, I got so many of my assassinations from standing on that glass bridge while someone ran up and sprinting in behind them. I can’t get anywhere close to that now.
I used to complain about how stupid slayer dmr’s on hemorrhage was in reach. Now that’s pretty much what BTB is. It’s really disappointing. I feel like the only way to push people back into close combat is really by making maps that force people into closer proximity to one another.
The other side of it is that everything is opened and there’s a million ways to get there, there is literally no place to hide, no fall back points or anything.
For example, we can assume that the focal point of the map is that basement area. It has 4 hall ways leading into it, with that statue in the middle that stops people from popping people from across the map. That gets pretty hectic. Now realize that if you want to push into the basement at all an enemy can simply jump down behind you. There’s also the ring surrounding the basement so they can also move around there as well to get to you and they can just use the plain old stairs. The problem is that it seems like that’s supposed to be the area they want us to play in the most but there’s so many ways you can get flanked or surrounded at any time.
