So when will we get a more in depth look into the Great Schism in the post war period from other races? I ask this as much of the post war lore had a large focus on either the Sangheili and how they are dealing with the fall of the Covenant, exploration of either the IIs or IVs (with Last Light being the only one looking delving into the morality of the S-III program), ONI or the Forerunners, with very little being actually focused on the Great Schism and what little we have on the Great Schism is almost completely one sided in favour of the Elites (The Return is one notable example), with the latter half of Broken Circle and Shadow of Intent delving into the San’Shyuum and almost nothing delving into the Jiralhanae’s perspective of the Great Schism (which is confusing seeing how most of the conflicts in the Great Schsim should be revolving around the Sangheili and the Jiralhanae). When will we have a more in depth look into the Great Schism from a perspective that’s not from the two upper castes of the Covenant, such as the Unggoy, Yonhet or Jiralhanae? From somebody that’s not affiliated with the Sangheili?
The chances of getting more about the lore for the other species is pretty slim, unless you can play “3 Degrees of Governor Sloan” with it. Or it directly correlates to in-game events.
Because honestly, we can probably do that with most of the existing lore with how intertwined 343 makes it.
Whole games based on it, halo 2 and 3. You even see a odst perspective In halo 3:odst
Yes it focuses on the elites and prophets because… "Great Betrayal among the Sangheili by the prophets."
There was only two sides to the schism… everyone picked a side and they had a civil war
Honestly the information is all there. There is no need.
In the first post-war years, the Yonhet began to emerge in hopes that the coast was clear enough to make a profit from the fleeting peacetime and political uncertainty. Taking advantage of the chaos and confusion of the Treaty period, fledgling Covenant warlords turned to the Yonhet to take advantage of their natural skills, giving some Yonhet individuals trusted roles. Others were not as fortunate as some avaricious warlords instead oppressed and enslaved them.
After the Covenant’s disastrous defeat at the Ark, Jiralhanae society splintered among many tribes. Most Jiralhanae returned to Doisac, where they continued to fight among themselves as the species’ organization fell apart. Many refused to cease their campaigning against the Sangheili and the two species remained locked in an irregular conflict for years to come. When the remaining San’Shyuum retreated into hiding, the Jiralhanae returned to their primitive, savage nature, allowing the Sangheili to gain the upper hand in battle. A Sangheili shipmaster visiting Kholo noted that at least some Jiralhanae factions had separated from those loyal to the former Covenant and were waging an internecine war against each other and thus the Brutes like their Elite counterparts, were fighting in a two-front war. Additionally, due to the Jiralhanae’s lack of advanced technology, they were unable to attain resources or even food for themselves, instead resorting to raids on Sangheili settlements. This, in turn, only served to provoke further violence between the two species.
There were several Jiralhanae, such as Manus and the crew of Piety, who remained loyal to their Sangheili commanders after the split of the Covenant. Many others served the Sangheili as security guards and servants on Sanghelios. However, this did not come without conflict. In March 2553, Jiralhanae servants in the state of Ontom launched insurgent attacks, which resulted in the death of dozens of Sangheili. Their revolt was quickly quelled by the city militia. At least some Jiralhanae allied with various remnants of
the Covenant; some fought on behalf of Merg Vol’s forces during the Battle of Draetheus V in 2554, and others fought in the Battle of Installation 03 as part of Jul 'Mdama’s Covenant faction in 2557. On March 5, 2558, the Jiralhanae Chieftain Lydus represented a polity of Jiralhanae willing to begin peace talks with the Swords of Sanghelios and the UNSC on Ealen IV. However, initial peace talks were foiled by a traitor Spartan 4 hired by the New Colonial Alliance.
The Unggoy obeyed other Covenant races out of fear more than religious faith. During the Great Schism, as the Unggoy did not ally with a particular side, and stayed with whoever commanded them, most likely out of subservient fear to their current masters. However, many of those serving under the Jiralhanae still held support for the Sangheili and revered Arbiter Thel 'Vadam, pointing out to their comrades that they once served under him. The Minister of Discovery (h2 terminal) believed that the Unggoy would follow the strongest side in the civil war.
During the Great Schism, the Yanme’e joined the San’Shyuum and the Jiralhanae. After the Human-Covenant War, many Yanme’e happily returned to their home system. In 2554, A large number of Yanme’e were present during the Battle of Draetheus V, serving in Merg Vol’s reformed Covenant faction. Many more served in Jul 'Mdama’s Covenant faction during the Battle of Installation 03. For the most part, though, the Yanme’e mostly kept to themselves. The UNSC attempted a “don’t poke the nest” policy toward the Yanme’e, attempting to avoid direct provocation while the UNSC focused on more immediate threats within the Covenant remnants. This policy was largely successful, though there were exceptions.
