Difference between Competitive and Social?

Been playing Halo since 2003, and yet the launch of Halo 5 is the very first time I’ve ever even heard the words competitive and social mentioned in this way. I don’t understand what the difference is. To me, I always thought you could simply choose to play competitively and try really hard to win, or to play casually and have fun.

Halo 5, Halo 2, Halo 3, 4, I’ve played all the Halo games the very same way; all playlists, and gametypes, I’ve played them without even caring how i played them. I played them as I felt like playing them; I try to win, but wasn’t competitive about it.

So what’s the difference? Why do people speak of Halo 5 being competitive focused, when competitive and social are LITERALLY just how you choose to play?

I’d love to know as well. Apparently people like you and & I are tryhards that ruin it for everyone. To me, it doesn’t matter if the list is in the social or competitive side, I want to win.

Right? If there’s an objective to a game, you try to win. Regardless of how competitive you are. Even in “social” stuff like Grifball(which is just one example) there is an objective to win. If you don’t try to win you aren’t playing the game as you’re supposed to be playing it.

I think it’s because of the rise in fame of MLG… a lot of people are trying to be a top rated player so they get noticed in the gaming world… Groups are trying to form teams of high skill players and so on…

People who are casual players are getting mixed up with that and in turn getting their -Yoink!- handed to them, which is causing people to back lash the game and complain about the matchmaking/playlist…

I could be mistaken but in halo 4 wasn’t their a separate mlg league that you could play in…

wouldn’t that just help this whole situation

Some people, for whatever reason, just want to play the game with their minds turned off and their effort being put forward at like 50%.

These people always used to have Social, where they wouldn’t interfere with those actually trying at the game.

Competitive isn’t just a mindset. It’s also a description for settings that promote skillful, strategic and/or balanced play. You can be competitive while you play Griffball, but Griffball isn’t in itself a competitive gametype, if that makes sense.

Why is everyone yelling about how competitive Halo 5 is? Ignorance of competitive settings and a focus on the shallow advertising surrounding the game. They’ll say it’s competitive because of aiming difficulty (which to be blunt is pretty exaggerated), but then they won’t pay attention to any other aspect of the game.

Usually when people mention competitive, they are referring to ranked. If you have been playing as long as you say, there were ranked playlists and social playlists in Halo 3. This is were the terminology came from (I believe). Most people who are playing in the ranked playlist, go in with a mindset of being competitive and playing at your best. Social was more for goofing off with your friends. Also with H3, if you were high ranked and your friends were much lower in rank and skill, you were able to play with them in the social playlist without worrying about playing against high level and highly skilled players every game. Even though this formula wasn’t perfect, since you did play again people that were good, but it still gave you an option to play with lower skilled friends and not have to worry about losing rank or your friend not having fun.

Halo always had a few social playlists, but really the only difference in Halo is it hides the ranking system. Some games have a social section that doesnt record stats, or anything and it really just throws you in random lobbies. Kids these days are just worried about their KD and get butthurt when they lose a game. Thats the reason why the quitting is so bad. Even when they are in a social game type like BTB or warzone in H5, they still quit out. So they’ll never be happy and they’ll always quit out of games…I wish people would just play a video game to have fun…what an idea that would be

In Halo 5 there is nothing but Ranked playlists aka competitive, there is absolutely no social playlist as in previous games so there’s no option for players to fully go social .

Example
Halo 3 had Team Slayer it was Ranked (competitive) 4v4, it also had Social Slayers which was 5v5 and since it was social it was more laid back.

It doesn’t make sense.
Does Griffball have a winning team and a losing team? yes? i wanna be on the winning team.

Is Griffball particularly skillful or deep? No, it’s not.

You can play checkers with a competitive mindset, but chess is by far the superior competitive game.

So we agree?
I honestly don’t remember how Griffball works, I was just using your example.

Opinion: Competitive and Social terms have been mentioned in pretty much ever halo. Halo 2 had a large MLG community and was one of the pioneers with online FPS competitive gaming.

I hear that halo 5 is more geared toward competitive gamers than ever before and I would agree. Due to having balanced weapons, vechicles, weapons on map, even starts, league Seasons, and a tiered ranking system. Not to mention begin co-designed by Josh Menke who worked on matchmaking systems on various Blizzard games. Also with HSC being advertised and sponsored by 343i. Did I mention they bought there own pro-team.

In response to “I’ve played them without even caring how i played them. I played them as I felt like playing them; I try to win, but wasn’t competitive about it” doesn’t really sound to me like your trying to win. Ever gametype and map have different strategizes, and tactics you can use to give you an advantage over you opponents. So if your not caring how you play them, I would say your playing casual.

To me halo 5 is well suited for competition, but how you play is up to no one else. I for one don’t consider myself a casual player nor a try hard. I enjoy to winning and playing in competitive matches seems to heighten the gameplay experience. While I do enjoy custom games from time to time, halo 5 really does seem to missing the social aspect it was also know for. With warzone, BTB and weekend special begin the only social “non ranked” gametypes available for matchmaking.

LNKO even with warzone and BTB being a “social” gametype. It’s full of try hards and full squads.

I’m exactly the same OP.

Well if stress inducing gameplay is your style of fun then by all means

Competition=stress, whether its good or bad, it comes. Halo 5 is a stressful game. Those 2 words shouldn’t be used in the same sentence ever. (Stressful and Game)
Video games are supposed to be FUN Every other halo offered some type of fun thing to do, but this game simply lacks that. Warzone is NOT what a relaxing game should be like, and 343i didn’t realize that so now they’re struggling to get all these game types out when the population and reputation of Halo 5 is lackluster.

there are different types of stress.

Stress isn’t necessarily bad. A little tension can be fun. The issue is that Halo 5 doesn’t have a real outlet for when someone isn’t looking for a stressful experience. Warzone is neat, but far from relaxing at times.

typically social is more laid back. Less likely to run into enemies that frequently team-shot or use other higher level tactics and just play the game. Nothing wrong with playing to win, but generally you’re there to enjoy yourself.

Warzone is SUPPOSED to be Halo 5’s version of social due to it’s lack of ranks and giving everyone the req system. The only problem is that there are stil a ton of overcompetitive people in Warzone that ruin the experience by pubstomping those who are less competitive. In Halo 3 people generally just ran around and had fun and any people who were over competitive were told to calm down.

Competitive is where you break out the team play, map control, and power weapon control in a serious matter. Communicate with your teammates and try to actively win.

Halo 5’s issue is that it still falls a little short of truly being ranked or social. All the ranked playlists don’t have social counterparts and there is no ranked warzone so competitive warzone buffs will always be in warzone with a chance to absolutely murder less skilled players with their groups. I liked Halo 3. If I wanted to play slayer I had ranked and social. If I wanted to play BTB I had ranked or social. Objective ranked or social. Halo 5 I hate war zone so I am forced to play arena and thankfully BTB isn’t ranked because when I play alone I’m not playing for keeps and getting super competitive. That being said I can still run into “tryhards” in BTB because there’s no other list.

Also there’s still no infection/action sack. Shame on you 343. Shame…

Pretty sure social slayer in H3 was stil 4v4.

it was 5v5 actually
however just because a game has a “rank” next to it doesn’t mean you cant play for fun and be “social”. It’s a game. its a social thing anyway.

Warzone is NOT a relaxing game type you’re right, and exactly what I mean. Getting that Adrenalin pumping is fine, but just getting pissed off from playing a game is never good.

Not when your rank is Onyx and your friends are platinum and below. It’s not fun for anyone.
