Difference between Cheif's armor in Halo 3 and 4?

The way Chief’s armor looks in Halo 3 is different in Halo 4 (even though its the same suit).
I mean we know that the appearance is still in universe (not just an upgraded look) from the Halo: Escalation comic where Blue Team finds Spartan Black Team: http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140723134907/halo/images/e/ef/Black_team_found_KIA.png I mean technically Black Team’s armor is was a NavSpecWep prototype, but the design is still the same as mk.5/6 in Halo 3
So why has there been an explanation for this discrepancy anywhere?

Its just a design change on 343i’s part however the reason they give is: nanobots changed/repaired/improved the armor while mc was in cryo,
theres an interview floating around somwhere where they explain it

Pretty sure the nanobots thing isn’t actually canon. It is still the regular Mark VI armor, just with 343’s creative flair instead of Bungie’s.

Thanks, that actually makes sense.

Actually it is cannon. It is still the regular Mark VI armor, just with 343’s creative flair instead of Bungie’s.
No, it actually is. In the Kilo-5 Trilogy (which is totally awesome btw) Naomi-010’s Mjolnir armor has self repair capabilities via nanotech bots (its the Mk VII). The naontech can also heal her as well to an extent.

It’s entirely possible that the Spartan IIs got prototype versions of this nanotech or something. Or the Chief himself may have a prototype made for him specially. After the Halo incident in Halo: Combat Evolved he got a new MK. VI Mjolnir variant made specially by the Special Warfare Centre in Seongnam (from the Halo 2 intro).

It’s entirely possible he got prototype tech and it was recontructed via prototype mjolnir designs and Cortana.

I’d hate to burst your bubble but that isn’t neccesarily “true” canon… Reason being that if the game-medium doesn’t mention those things then it is “the writer” of said book that fills plot holes haphazardly.

For example, see: Forward unto dawn’s 117 emblazoned H3 armor, this “theory” about repairing the H4 suit when it’s chestplate is damaged still / MC would have to be taken out of cryosleep to change the armor then thrown back in. Simplest answer is that 343 wanted their own touches and formed story around it.

Well yeah, the fact that 343 wanted their own design is obvious, we all know that. I was meaning an in universe reason.

Most of Halo’s back story comes from Expanded Universe stuff including the book. Not all of it is consistent, that’s true. But some of it would be more cannon then others. The books are an example of that. If we were using only the stuff mentioned in the games as “true cannon” then Halo’s universe would be incredibly limited.

I mean the whole Spartan background that’s in Guardians is based off the Halo Reach novel. So was a bunch of the stuff from Halo Reach.

Uhh… yeah, it’s true canon. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.
It was said by an employee in an interview and was established in the books, which are absolutely canon. Under 343i, all forms of media are equal canon. Games are not higher than books.

Forward Unto Dawn does not use Halo 3 armor, it uses Chief’s Mk IV armor, which was first seen in Halo Legends The Package.

A lot of Chief’s Halo 4 armor is artistic liberty particularly to increase functionality for what was needed of it. But the canon explanation for the visual difference is that Cortana repaired/altered it with nanomachines while Chief was in cryo.

I wouldn’t give too much credence to the nanobot argument. The nanobot tech that is utilized for upgrading the armor only refers to the Mark VII. Though it is possible that the Mark VI could have a nanobot suite there is no mention of it anywhere in reference to this set of armor. In Glasslands, there isn’t any real indication as to what the extent of the nanobots capabilities are when upgrading the Mark VII armor. It is simply stated that the armor, “…upgrades and maintains itself…”. To me all that indicates is that there may be some self repair capabilities (like filling in sections in the plating that may be compromised such as punctures, nicks and dents) and software maintenance without a an engineer or technician having to do it themselves. It isn’t implied that entirely new equipment can be added to the armor while in cryo.

The case with Cortana’s statement at the beginning of Halo 4 is that she tells John that she upgraded his firmware. This does not suggest that she added equipment to the armor or updated its physical appearance. It just means that the armor’s software has been updated. The Mark VI armor looks the way it does in Halo 4 because of 343i’s goal to make John look more aesthetically like a walking tank. They provided no lore for the change.

If you don’t want to worry about all the little details that disprove the nanobot argument, watch the opening cutscene in Halo 4. Here, we see entire fire teams of SPARTAN IIs battling the Covenant and wearing the same armor John wears during Awakening (first mission). We also see Halsey introducing John to Cortana for the first time. He is wearing the current Mark VI armor here as well. John is also shown engaging a Brute Chieftan from close range with the new Mark VI armor. When is the last time John fought a Jiralhanae? These are all flashbacks played while Halsey gives a brief account of the SPARTAN II program. The Mark VI armor John wears now is, in simple terms, a retcon.

No, it’s not.

Josh Holmes already confirmed that the reason all the Spartans wear Chief’s Mk VI in the Prologue is due to time/resource constraints. They judt didn’t have the ability to make all new assets for one cutscene. The Prologue is more symbolic than anything. Their armor there does not make it a retcon. And if it was a retcon, then Halo 2 Anniversary would have sported the new armor. The armor canonically changed from Halo 3 to 4.

And if you don’t like the nanobots argument… so be it. That’s the canonical reason given multiple times by Frank O’Connor. He said something along the lines of “We have nanobot technology today, so it isn’t difficult to imagine vastly improved and farther reaching nanobot technology 500 years in the future.” It’s just expected that there are nanomachines operating in the armor, and a lot of things in Halo. We know Warthogs have nanomachines.
Cortana may not have directly addressed physical differences, but the story is that she still did change part of it.

I admit that you are right about the Mark VI being used in the cutscenes. I had actually forgotten about that twitter drop.
In regard to the nanobots; I remember O’Oconnor mentioning in an offhand comment that nanobots were used to repair John’s armor and that’s about it. He doesn’t explicitly state that they were used to overhaul the suit’s entire design. Because of that, I tend to lean more toward the information that is offered to us in universe and the many times the developers mention that it was just an artistic change.
