Can anyone shed some light as to what happened to the Didact before the events of Halo 4?

We probably won’t have the complete puzzle of what drove the Didact into doing what he’s doing until Halo: Silentium is released in March. That’s probably because it spoils the story of Halo 4/ties everything together.

I recommend looking into the Forerunner Saga books and other Lore sources. There’s far too much to explain about the Didact.

I just don’t get why the Didact is evil, and wants to destroy Chief/humanity. Didn’t he want to preserve the Mantle? Why does he hate humanity so much and when did this happen?

For that information you may want to read the novels, they elaborate much more than the Wiki as Hellfire suggested earlier.
