Did they change the recipe too much in Halo Wars 2

I have played Halo Wars (HW1) a lot. It was probably my fav online multiplayer game of last gen. I was so hyped for the sequel, but so far I feel it has been changed too much from the original.

  1. I miss the old tech up system. Now I have to upgrade a base and spend tech points along with supply points to buy something like a scorpion. In HW1 I only had to build reactors. To get level 4 (the highest required) I only had to take up two building slots and just upgrade both of them to double reactors to achieve level 4 tech. It was simple and had lots of strategy to it. It changes the dynamic greatly.
  2. Alien leaders don’t appear to be controllable on the battlefield anymore. In HW1 the player could press Y button while playing as Arbiter to go into rage mode. If that is possible with the Brute in HW2 I couldn’t find it.
  3. There needs to be a lot of improvement in the areas of being able to distinguish who controls which units.
  4. The combat isn’t impactful enough. It’s too bland. The MAC blast is underwhelming in particular.

These me are a lot of points, but they are important. The first one in particular could really affect on the field strategies. I’m going to have to wait until death match is available Friday to go more in depth of how it affects things negatively or positively. That’s really the only mode I’m interested in. 2v2 party teams Standard of HW1.

Analogy: If McDonald’s announced they were making a sequel to the Big Mac by changing the secret/special (don’t remember what they call it) to something different then a lot of people would be disappointed. BUT if McDonald’s announced they were changing the Big Mac by keeping everything like normal (keeping the special sauce) but just making it Bigger with fresh beef then people would be happy with the sequel. If you don’t understand the analogy what I’m trying to say is this. Don’t change the recipe. Just improve upon it.

I think there is still time for HW2 to improve upon things. I’m excited for it. I’m also excited for the definitive version of the original.

Yup. It is less fun.

Yes, they changed to much. First of all, the units dont talk or say anything when you tell them to move or attack and its annoying because you dont know if they understood your order. The “increased unit cap” is worse than the halo wars 1 cap, you have 60 capacity, but your units now take from 2-5 capacity spaces.
The bases for the brutes now look like they were human made, they look exactly like the human bases but with brutes coming out of them.
The game is too complex or hard to understand. I played halo wars A LOT i like it so much i still play it to this day, but halo wars 2 was way to -Yoink!- complicated.
And there are soo many more things i didnt like about the halo wars 2 beta.
The only thing i liked about it is the fact that the shield generators can now be put in the turret spaces, or you can build some sort of a radar to increase the sight distance.
Halo wars 2 was a HUGE let down, its horrible in every way, and everyone i have talked with says the same

I didn’t think of those person that posted above me. The units not talking adds to the confusion. Also the increased population cost of units seems to cancel out the increased population limit.

So far I think so too

Personally, I really enjoy these new changes, as I feel it gives us a more complex and traditional RTS experience. My main complaint about Halo Wars was that it was too simple, with only one resource. The addition of energy, commander power trees and cloaking create a more complete experience, in my eyes. That, and I believe that the new tech tier system is far more fluid than we had before, as you don’t need to sacrifice as many spots in your base to tech levels, and upgrading your base is much more important now.

I’m loving Halo Wars 2 so far!

I disagree with you on not sacrificing as many spots for tech in Halo Wars 2. In HW1 I only had to take up two spots to have level 4 tech. Now it takes more in HW2, because the tech points roll in so slow. Also HW2’s system pretty removes the tank rush.

You don’t have to sacrifice any spots for reactors though, you just go up in tech by upgrading your base.

Do you use more spots to have enough of both resources? Yes, but again, that’s because you have two resources now. I’m glad that they made this change.

Yeah, If McDonalds changed the “secret sauce” people would riot. They changed too much just for the sake of change. If Halo Wars 1 was a clear stream of water, Halo Wars 2 is a muddy puddle.

2 problems though. While yes one only has to upgrade the base to tech up, but there has to be a bunch of spaces on the base taken up by generators due to the electricity level going up so slow. And more importantly you no longer can build hsp, hsp, reactor, reactor, and to tank rush. Now in HW2 one would have to build a bunch of generators and wait a long time to upgrade base to tech up.

I guess I should’ve seen this post before I made mine, mine is pretty similar. Haha

Tl;dr and like every other thread here complaining about the new complexities, the compression and expansion all at once, learn it or quit. It’s an RTS. They evolve. Look at any series and prove me wrong. It’s still holding its own as a console RTS’.

Git gud

If tldr then why reply?

Because you people are bad. The devs will hear this and ruin it for the rest of us because you couldn’t ride the learning curve.

It’s not the learning curve that’s the issue. The issue is that the core of the original HW is being changed too much.

Lol to complex to difficult to understand…love it. RTS games are suppose to be complex, difficult, and require thought…it’s not a simple aim and shoot. I enjoyed it. But not domination. Boo lol. But yea it’s a good game so far can’t wait to see what it all entails!!!

Well, I don’t see the loss of tank rushing to be a bad thing. Would you care to explain to me how this change is a negative thing?

Maybe. I love the profit and he isn’t in this timeline please don’t ruin my favorite game

> Well, I don’t see the loss of tank rushing to be a bad thing. Would you care to explain to me how this change is a negative thing?

I’m just trying to illustrate how the fundamentals of the game have changed. Instead of a sequel HW2 seems more like a different game than the original with just barely enough of the original.

And tank rushes aren’t bad. The original HW had a counter for everything.

Points 2-4 I agree with greatly…
Number 1 I disagree with because I don’t see it as a huge difference overall and its a relatively small change
