Did Microsoft Cause the Lack of Splitscreen?

Let me start with saying that Microsoft has screwed over the Halo developers many times already. To start, they were the ones that forced Bungie to add the “Combat Evolved” subtitle to the first Halo game. Secondly, Microsoft made Bungie release the ever-so short Halo 3: ODST as its own game, rather than as DLC for Halo 3, because they wanted “the next Halo.” Lastly, when 343i asked for MCC to be delayed because of how broken it was, Microsoft denied their request because they wanted the game for 2014’s holiday season.

Fast forward to now, and it can be easily told that Microsoft is upset that so many new games can’t maintain 60fps/1080p on the Xbox One, but they can on the PS4. Since Halo 5: Guardians is Microsoft’s flagship exclusive title this fall, it’s very likely that Microsoft told 343i that they had to maintain 60fps/1080p no matter what, with no acceptions. As a result, 343i cannot use splitscreen because it would lower the frame rate, which is something Microsoft won’t allow. Any thoughts?

This child be true but we’d never know.

Where is there any proof to these claims? I’m not saying it’s not true, but you seem to be taking a few liberties when ‘explaining’ these.

Ive been watching digital foundry for a while and they do fps test for games and I just want to say no not that many games can run 1080p 60fps on ps4 so do not believe what people tell you. And no Microsoft also didn’t tell 343 to do anything, they wanted to make halo 5 60fps of their own will so that is what they’ve done. If you read some articles about what phil spencer said about the lack of split screen you will see that it has nothing to do with him or Microsoft.

It is certainly a possibility, but then again I’m not too worried over splitscreen. Although, I never understood the big deal about 60 FPS either. To each their own I suppose. What I don’t understand is why the FPS couldn’t be dropped to 30 or the resolution to 720p just for splitscreen.

Splitscreen Thread…
Btw Microsoft is making products for their customers and they wan’t cheap consoles. So that’s what you get.

“Secondly, Microsoft made Bungie release the ever-so short Halo 3: ODST as its own game, rather than as DLC for Halo 3, because they wanted “the next Halo.” Lastly, when 343i asked for MCC to be delayed because of how broken it was, Microsoft denied their request because they wanted the game for 2014’s holiday season.”

Sources please?

And all splitscreen discussions are supposed to take place in the official thread.

Well Microsoft did create 343i so they are very likely to have caused this removal of split screen to show that their Xbox One can handle 60fps, which is ironic considering how they had to remove a big feature of the game to achieve it.

Leave the conspiracies to Halofollower. We already have enough split-screen threads on this forum.

Just imagine how much better Halo would have been if it was never called “Combat Evolved”. MS cause so many problems!!!

So true

Short answer no , click this and read this article. It was 343s own decision

Bungie said a few times they intended ODST as an addon/expansion and never intended to sell it at full retail cost. I can’t find the source, but this is ages old information. As for the MCC I don’t remember this being said.

Okay. Well, if you think there’s any field of endeavor anywhere in the world where the guys who pay the bills do not get to call the shots then you forgot or never knew how things really work. Adding “Combat Evolved” to the title of a game doesn’t really seem to me like compromising the creative integrity of the studio, but if you think so then so be it. Releasing ODST in one form of packaging instead of another… ditto. Insisting that your flagship title, made by a developer you OWN, is optimized to show off the capabilities of your hardware doesn’t seem to me like overstepping any bounds. The decision itself may be questionable, but their right to make it is not. And anyway, history is replete with examples of publicly owned corporations making dubious decisions for short-term gain. And publicly held companies are responsible to their shareholders first, their management teams second, and their customers a distant third. If you didn’t already know this then sorry for the bad news.

343 wanted to have a solid 60fps. To do this they made a system where the resolution lowers to achieve it in high intensity situations. The removal of splitscreen likely strained the system too far like to sub-900p levels. Something they likely seemed unacceptable.

They just couldn’t do it. No point in whining about it now. Just gotta hope the technology improves so it can be in Halo 6.

I’m sorry but do you have any sources for all theses claims

Well said. Sad that the shareholders are more important than the actual consumers.

Shareholder argument doesn’t make sense. They would’ve just made Halo 4 again with prettier graphics if that’s all they cared about.

I don’t recall seeing the tinfoil hat as one of the Halo 5 helmets.

Halo 5 doesn’t maintain 1080p, it dynamically scales between 1920 x 1080 and 832 x 810 (though it hits 1080p in multiplayer more consistently).
I doubt the reasons for dropping splitscreen had much to do with resolution or framerate
