Did Master Chief always talk this much? (Campaign)

It seems like Master Chief talks a lot in Halo 5. I don’t remember him talking nearly as much in previous campaigns. Am I mistaken?

He pretty much never talked in 1-3, but in 4-5, he actually uses his vocal cords.

He did in Halo 4, as well as in the books. But no, in Halo 1-3, he did not talk as much.

Honestly, I like how the Chief talks more in 343i’s games. After reading all of the books, it shows that he does have a strong personality, which Bungie never conveyed in their games. While his character was definitely weaker in 5 than it was in 4, I appreciate that particular effort on 343i’s part.

He is also constantly with his 3 best friends which makes it easier for him to talk.

He is with other people this game.

At least we now know he’s not mute. Hahahhahahah oh I’m terrible:/

I actually prefere talkative Chief more now, I like the Character and personality that has been built with him particularly in Halo 4.

Chief is Chief

Don’t question what Cheif does. If he talks more then let him talk more. We saw in Halo 5 what happened when you tried to go against the Cheif and it was not pretty.

Well, Bungie wanted Chief to be that faceless/voiceless protagonist that you could immerse yourself in (you’re the character), so they gave him minimal character development. But on the lore side, he was his own character (the book “Fall of Reach” even published before the release of Combat Evolved, and his character is pretty fleshed out there). So Bungie’s choice was to essentially ignore the lore and use Chief as a vessel for player immersion.

I mean, for pete’s sake, Chief spoke one word to the Arbiter during the entire campaign of Halo 3. He said “worse”. That was it. People give Halo 5 a hard time for lack of character development, at least Locke exchanged some dialog with the Arbiter.

But after 3 games with Chief in this universe, I think it was a good idea to stop looking at it like “I am Master Chief” and to explore “who is John?” as a person, finally, in the games themselves. The very end of Halo 3 was the first time we heard him called “John” in the games, so I think that sets Halo 4 up as a good place to really get into his character and stop using him as an immersion tool like the Rookie & Noble 6 were. Many of us who have read the books know who he is already. And 343 respects the lore and uses it. They don’t ignore it like Bungie did. And if you think I’m being harsh on Bungie for ignoring the lore, go read “Fall of Reach”, then go play Halo: Reach. lol (Actually, again, I am being harsh … just watch this to help you feel better about Reach’s issues.)

I honestly agree with you 100%
