Did anyone like Halo 5 story?

From what I understand there are lots of people that think the Halo 4 story was good.
I usually only see negativity surrounding Halo 5’s story.

My question is this. Is there anyone hear that is a real purist for Halo lore that has read a fair amount of the books that surround Halo 4 and 5 and that’s played Halo 4 and 5 that actually thought Halo 5 was a solid story?

I’m wondering if people’s disappointment in Halo 5’s story stems maybe from a lack of understanding of the story since it seems that 343 required players to do a bit of deep diving into the lore to have a better understanding of 5’s story… and I’m guessing the average player never did that leading to a lack of understanding of the story.

So is there anyone that read it that actually thinks Halo 5 story was great and that was actually disappointed in the direction the story has gone in Halo Infinite (since it is a spiritual reboot of sorts, I’m guessing elements of Halo 5’s story have been tossed out or abandoned as is usually the case in these situations).

Is there anyone that enjoiyed Halo 5’s story but is actually now letdown by Halo Infinite’s story?

I enjoyed Halo 5’s campaign, but I’m a low bar to clear. You could slap a Halo sticker on it, tell me it’s a campaign, and I’ll eat it up like a cheeseburger.

Also no, I don’t consider Halo Infinite’s campaign a letdown. They touched back on Halo 5 story elements frequently enough that I knew it was a direct sequel.

Well, I read all the books up until Halo 5, which killed my enthusiasm for the series for a long time. 343 didn’t even really make it rewarding to read the books. For example: them bringing Jul ‘Mdama (a major and likable character in the books) to the game for one cutscene and immediately kill him. I’m not gonna lie I had fun doing “the chase around the galaxy” for Chief, but a lot of it just didn’t pay off and most of the characters just stood around and did nothing. So I’m gonna say no I didn’t enjoy Halo 5’s story even after reading all the associated material.

I miss blue team. This game is a smack in the face to all Halo 5 fans because we thought we were getting a trilogy . Yes the campagin sucked but the lore behind it was perfect. I wish it was handled better because it could’ve been the greatest Halo story ever

H5 story was flat as hell (imo the problem). But I really enjoyed the introduction of other spartans especially the whole team blue. I did enjoy the campaign (gameplay wise) but I didn’t had this wow moments like I had in Infinite’s first and second mission.

Storytelling in H5 was the worst in the series imo.

H5 ending was like: DAMN I"M GONNA DESTROY THE GALAXY and Infinite: Na you don’t, we’ve created the AI Weapon which will outplay you easily.

Hmm tbh that is a bit jarring to go from that ending in 5 to the whole “weapon” solution. It definitely feels like a cheap effort to sweep something that was going to be huge under the rug as opposed to good storytelling.

It’s more of a fixer upper than some brilliant continuation that delivers on what was teased. Not to say Infinite’s story is bad as I haven’t played it yet. But that definitely reeks of more of a “do over” than a continuation.

Whether that was a good choice or not remains to be seen for this guy. One more shift tonight and then I can finally sink my teeth into the campaign when I get home.

Wait, so you’re telling me that you’re reviewing and offering an opinion on a campaign that you’ve never played?

Just my thoughts based on what was just told to me about the story. I could wind up being wrong and maybe that transition feels completely natural. Who knows.

Halo 5 is worse if you’ve read the books. It pretty much ruins everything. It got me to stop reading the books.

The "you need to read the books to enjoy halo 5’ sentiment is grosly misplaced, and is just fans who haven’t read the books lashing out randomly.

I read the books and that’s what made me like Halo 5. Weird you say that

So basically, a lot of the setup from the books was great but was all ruined by Halo 5’s story?

That is pretty frustrating. I really hope the Infinite story ends up being good because I hate when franchises’ like Halo with rich lore are ruined by one terrible individual story.

That’s interesting.

I’d like to see you too have a discussion as to why the expansion of lore since 343 took over was good and that Halo 5 was a good expansion of it all vs why Halo 5 was bad and ruined all the setup.

I thought the Halo 5 campaign was great. I would have liked a little more Master Chief in it, but otherwise really enjoyed it.

First I would like to say that the pacing of Halo 5s story was bad. Really bad. The way it was handled was horrible I think everyone agrees on that.

When I read all the classic books I found out that MasterChief in fact fight with the thruster pack ALL the time. Right before Halo CE he lost them. I remember reading detailed battles chief had and from then on I always wanted thruster packs in halo. In halo 5 I got my wish and it was the most Halo to me because it perfectly matched what I read in the books.

Aside from that I read all the material that happened before Halo 5. Yes. Some of it should been in the game but the comics and books were really good.

The introduction to blue team and fire team Osiris is what really captivated me about Halo 5s story. Blue team has been one of my favorites and reading all the stories up to Halo 5 made me excited to see blue team.

Again. Once the first cutscenes were over the story became what we all hate today. I think the story itself AND the lore was perfect. I just think how they went about telling the story was really bad.

Now the story is all messed up because they decided to scrap what was suppose to be " Halo 6". They should’ve at least ended the trilogy for the fans who paid attention to Halo 5s story

Interesting perspective.

So as somebody who was looking forward to seeing more of a direct continuation to Halo 5’s story what do you think of Halo Infinite?

Obviously it has went in a different direction. Bias aside, do you enjoy the new direction or do you think Halo 5 was actually better overall?

I liked it so much it’s the only Halo campaign I didn’t finish.

I thought the general plot was fine, it’s just the execution that sucked. Way too many things going on I feel like they should’ve picked one plot line and really fleshed it out. Characters were extremely boring too.

I watched some of the campagin on YouTube. I don’t like it. Bias aside I actually think it’s a very bare story. Very little characters in it. Very little story. It’s just here is the bad guy and they fight. Nothing really stood out to me.

I won’t buy the game I will not support the way this game released so I won’t have an opinion on actual gameplay but since watching the story on YouTube it still has not made me want to play it.

The only thing that makes me want to play Halo infinite is to get the grapple upgraded to I can swing like spider man everywhere. Other than that I have no interest in roaming an empty world. I would’ve much rathererd a linear story line like every other Halo.

I do think Halo 5 is better story wise but again they way they went about it wasn’t good.

Halo 5 is better overall to me in every way. You can create any Halo in the forge and even create new game.modes that no other Halo could. Even infnite won’t be able to create some game modes that Halo 5 had.

I got all the halos. I played every one. And I got every one of.them.on launch. This is the first Halo I have not gotten. And it’s sad because I was so invested in the story before Halo 5 came out. I remember listening to the audio logs of the civilian. I remember reading all the comics.

Halo infinite didn’t do that for me. Nothing about it was interesting that made me want to deep dive into the lore.

As a standalone experience, I thought H5 had a decent enough story.

But when you think back to how they really played up the “Hunt the Truth” and “Master Chief has gone rogue, he’s the bad guy now”, it was such a let down. They should have kept that mystery alive much longer. They pretty much give you the reason he’s gone rogue at the beginning of the game. They should have had us playing as Spartan Locke, discovering Cortana’s plan, and thinking Chief was helping her the entire time until the climax of the story where you find him and discover he’s actually trying to stop her.

Also gameplay-wise I thought it was straight trash. Fighting the Warden Eternal was okay the first time, but then you have to fight him like 3 more times and it just got repetitive. Every time he popped up I was like CJ in San Andreas “ah -Blam!-, here we go again”. I also hated what they did to the Promethean Knights, turning them into mini-bosses instead of an equivalent to fighting elites like they were in H4.

Once I finished the campaign, I never touched it again, which says a lot in my eyes because I always find myself going back to CE, 2, and 3 every now and then because of how fun some of those missions were.

When I think back to the original trilogy, I can point to missions like Halo, Truth and Reconciliation, Metropolis, Regret, Sierra 117, and Tsavo Highway and think of how fun they were (and still are) to play. When I think back to H5, I can’t even name one mission.

I liked the Halo 5 story but I found playing through it to be less enjoyable than other Halo games, I think mainly as the enemies lacked personality and were quite annoying to fight.

The Banished are a far more interesting and diverse set of enemies.
