When Locke is running down to power off the relay to prevent Cortana from taking blue team with her, that he would sacrifice himself and die? In fact when he said “only one of us needs to reach it” I was hoping the whole scrub team Orisis would die.

Can’t say that one crossed my mind.
The line about only one person needing to get there seems to be only for co-op purposes (as well as a bit of immersion for me at least, since that’s something I would probably say). If you do it in co-op, it doesn’t matter who gets there as long as somebody does.
I feel that someone needed to die to give the story more surprises.
Yet, no one died.
