I was watching TNG when I came upon the episode “Relics.”
Basically the Enterprise comes upon a Dyson Sphere with a old hero “asleep” in an old ship on it. They rescue him and go into the Sphere.
Now let’s look at Halo 4’s plot:
Basically the UNSC comes upon a Shield World with a old hero “asleep” in an old ship. They rescue him and go into the Shield World.
Here’s an article on the Dyson Sphere from the episode. I highly suggest going on Netflix and watching the episode. There are some parts that remind me of both Halo Wars and the Halo 4 trailer.
Dyson spheres have already been used in ghosts of onyx

Is it wrong for any form of media to be inspired by and be similar to ideas that came before? Call it ripping off if you want, but it is an inevitably for humans to take current ideas and put their own spin on it. Humanity has been around for many years now, you shouldn’t see this as surprising :P.
It’s extremely hard to be completely original now days and i highly doubt Halo 4 is the only product that uses the idea shield worlds or Dyson spheres. I can’t tell if you view this as a problem or a good thing. To me, it’ just another location; another vista in which we will guide our beloved Master Chief to do battle with whatever enemies 343i throws at us.
More often than not, good ideas are often not original at all. Sometimes, ideas that strive to be original come up short and while i am for innovation/change, i don’t see any harm in using pre existing ideas as long as stagnation does not occur.
A Dyson Sphere is a real concept that comes in 3 forms, all seen in the Halo series. As for the plot similarities, he’s, a sleeping hero winds up on the sphere. As far as we know, that’s where it ends. If the UNSC find John on the planet, he may be awake and he may be far from his ship. Both are science fiction series that are using an existent concept as the bases for a plot. The rest of it isn’t exactly groundbreaking fiction, any similarities are likely coincidental. Bungie ended Halo 3 in such a way that necessitates for certain things to happen in Halo 4.
I think I should restate my OP. I don’t think that 343i ripped off Star Trek, but could have been inspired by the episode. It’s just the basic plots are extremely similar that I feel that somebody at 343i must have seen this episode.
I am a huge fan of TNG, so I congrats 343i if they took this episode for inspiration.

TNG was the last good star trek series IMO, i grew up with that show as well when i was a kid. Thank you for clearing that up TC, i wasn’t sure what you meant by with your original post. I wasn’t trying to sound antagonistic either btw ^.^.
Personally I think you just found something with a couple of similarities and started thinking of how else it could be similar. There’s basically two confirmed similarities, one based on an existing scientific concept that has been part of Halo lore since GoO, the other a small part of the plot that isn’t anything new. Both of these things were set up by Bungie (possibly with input by Eric Nylund), not 343i.
It wouldn’t be the first time Halo has used inspiration from other science fiction titles. There is the novel Ringworld, a few things from the movie Aliens, I think there were some things from Starship Troopers too but not a hundred percent sure on that. Bungie even admitted to things that inspired Halo.
I also want to say they were inspired by some things from Warhammer 40k, but if not they are frighteningly similar.
My dyson sphere helps me vac up the house easier.

This is so true, also, the Dyson sphere wasn’t ripped from Star Trek, at lest, it wasn’t the first thing that’s every been “ripped” there are lots of things in every sci fi movie, tv show, book, game, and comic that has stuff “ripped” from others. Let’s take the iconic Halo Ring world. There’s a book out there called, Ring World, which, came out along before Halo was even thought of, and it was about a ring world, which other than the size, is basically Halo.
So saying “HEY HALO RIPPED FROM STAR TREK!” is like saying every parent you named their kid Bob or Joe is stealing the name from some one.
Yikes! I recommend you never watch Aliens…
