Did 343 Kill Halo (A H4 & H5 Question)?

Did 343 Kill Halo?

I don’t think they did.

Bungie killed halo with Reach and 343 mutilated the dead body.

Is Halo a dead franchise? Far from it, it sells like hotcakes.

Does it retain population as well as it used to? No, recent Halo titles have had faster declines in shorter amounts of time. The community has a lot of their own theories why.

My theory is people don’t like playing mediocre games for an extended period of time.

Then why do so many people play CoD?

It’s not just faster declines in shorter times, you compare Reach to 3 and 4 to Reach and you see a dead multiplayer.

And I think what is going on is that Halo as a story-telling franchise is not dead but as a multiplayer franchise is very close to dying (and may if 5 doesn’t perform cpr)

It’s not dead. It’s resurrected in a new body. Halo 3 was Bungie’s last true Halo game, and then they made the prequel, Reach. Reach had a different protagonist, different multiplayer, different color scheme, etc. 343i is following Bungie’s storyline with Halo 4+, but want to add their own multiplayer. Halo 4 was the Beta, Halo 5 will be perfect. I saw a forums somewhere where someone posted something before Halo 2. They said it would be cool if you had sprint in Halo 2, and people AGREED WITH HIM.
If 343i made a Halo 3 clone, people WOULD get mad and say they are just trying to get money. No one else besides the aging Halo fans will buy the game.
So no, Halo is not dying.

It looks like 343 have decided against trying to return Halo to the top of the mainstream market and instead want to focus on using Halo’s eSports pedigree to establish Halo as a major eSports title once more, similar to games like StarCraft.

This. I don’t think you can be too hard on 343 after what Bungie did with Reach. Halo 3 was the last great Halo game.

343 at least gave us a good campaign with Halo 4.

CoD isn’t a mediocre game, it’s a very good game that happens to focus entirely on catering to the lowest-common-denominator FPS consumer.

It’s really quite simple - if you’re a casual gamer, this is what the choice between Halo/CoD is:

  1. Play Halo. Get completely wrecked every game, often get messages to the effect of “just quit next time so we don’t lose”
  2. Play CoD. Easily get something close to a 1.0 K/D or better. Don’t have too much effect on if your team wins or loses, so people don’t bother you unless you start talking smack.

The vast majority of casual players are going to enjoy scenario #2 more than scenario #1, which makes CoD super popular. Calling it a bad game isn’t really fair, it’s just the dumb blonde of the FPS world.

At least as far as MP is concerned… the single player in CoD is full of bad game design.

The customer is never satisfied, my friend.
