Dev Diaries/Community Updates

So with the delay of the game following the release of the campaign demo, do you think we’ll see any new footage of the game’s progressive development over the course of the impending year up to the release date?

It would be nice just so we know what to expect when the game actually releases. What features are being made available, removed, updates to the engine, how easily new content is added into the slipspace engine. Because going dark and ignoring the feedback of the community whether just plain toxic or actually constructive typically develops a disconnect between the community and the developers which ends up in a release that is subpar with the playerbase’s expectations.

Because right now, the only thing I see from the Original Halo is the wildlife from the E3 Demo of the original Halo, John’s Armor and the overall look of the Pelican. That’s it.

Everything else is new. It honestly felt like 343i’s creative direction was literally just to look at other successful games and say: “Well if the grappling hook and destructible bodies and weakpoints worked for them it’ll probably work for us”. I know that’s not the case but the grappling hook and destructible armor pieces was the most obvious gameplay addition and though new weapons were showcased no other gadgets were showcased over the course of the video.

As a final parting note:
RIP Kraeg Ironmaw.

Any form of consistent communication would be appreciated at this point. The game was supposed to release in 3 months and we know nothing about it

I like the idea of more BTS content like Bungie’s ViDocs

I couldn’t care less about Status Updates.
They will provide news sooner or later.

There’s another thread that’s a bit less specific about more open and honest communication from 343i, and I’ve definitely detailed a lot of my thoughts on the subject there. But that was a bit closer to the dev update announcing the delay, and I felt more heated about the entire thing at the time, which resulted in something that came across as a bit egregiously demanding of 343i.

Bottom line is, we as fans aren’t “owed” or “entitled” anything specific in terms of communication as to the ongoing development of the game, even in the wake of a devastating delay like this. In the end, only the final product can truly say whether or not the extraordinarily long dev process was justified, and if we’re being fair we must reserve final judgment for the final product.

That’s final judgement, though. What I don’t understand is how it seems so many folks around are so viscerally reactionary when some of us say that the delay doesn’t, in our opinions, inspire confidence in 343i’s stewardship of this game or the efficiency and quality of the dev process to date. I think the delay, given the monumental circumstances that make it less than awesome (along with myriad take-them-or-leave-them rumors of 343i being a bit of an internal mess) , begs some serious questions of the whole kit and caboodle behind the scenes. Again, we’re not owed answers to these questions. In the end, we’re only “owed” our money’s worth out of the final game.

But, if 343i cares about the community and wants to help alleviate what I believe are justifiable concerns that are brought to light by the delay, before the final product releases, it would certainly be a nice and appreciated gesture to receive more communication detailing what’s been going on and what the plan is from here to release.

I think the fairest way to deal with all of this is to accept as fans that the delay is a multi-faceted development that partially occurred due to matters both without and within 343i’s control. It’s a shame it had to happen, but it did have to happen given the state of things presently. We as concerned fans are just hurting for a bit more information as to the why’s and how’s for all of this than were provided in the vague dev update detailing the delay.

Many of us can certainly stand to be a bit more polite and constructive in expressing this concern and frustration, but I don’t think it’s coming from a wholly unreasonable place. Unyshek’s recent Twitter update does seem to promote a desire to be at least a bit more communicative with the fans in terms of alleviating concerns and sating our piqued curiosities. Here’s hoping we get a great community update in the next few weeks that answers more questions than it raises.
