Dear 343 - Matchmaking tweaks

Firstly, I would just like to thank you all for making Halo 4, a game that is a million times better than Halo Reach. It’s much appreciated by the majority of the community and me as well. Though there are things that could improve on to make this game brilliant, because at the moment its mainly the little things that are holding it back unfortunately. I know its only been out a little while and that games take time to tweak and fix, but please don’t just let Halo 4 burn like Halo Reach.

[OKAY LOTS OF WORDS NOW]

Here are my main grievances:

  1. DMR rate of fire (ROF) needs to be slowed down (not by too much though), either in scope or unscoped. It just dominates the sandbox at the moment. Which is a shame, because I feel that if you get the 4 main precision weapons (DMR, BR, Carbine, LR) well balanced and in niché roles, then this could quite possibly be the best halo yet.

My DMR loadout is named EASY MODE because of this, the obscenely fast kill times and damage it does to vehicles are too much for a starting weapon. Which brings me on to the next point:

  1. Increase the damage resistance of vehicles back to Halo 3 levels. I remember when I used to fear warthogs, they were lethal in the right hands, and warthog charges and escapes into/from the enemy team with friends were so much fun. But now they are just completely shutdown by the majority of starting load out weapons, not to mention other vehicles and power weapons, the ghost, warthog are both laughably weak due to them being flipped so easily by DMR’s and other weapons too.

Maybe if you kept the other vehicles the same but increased these two that would be a better solution, but something needs to put the threat of vehicles back into the game, and no, increasing the splash damage of the wraith and banshee would not be a good solution… lol green balls of death should be left in Reach.

  1. More weapon balance issues:

Plasma pistol needs to be put as ordnance (both personal and world), it is a power weapon and should be treated as such. People spawning with this gun just means vehicles are completely messed up whenever they leave the base, especially on these maps which are smaller than other BTB maps of the past.

Plasma grenades also need to be removed as loadout nades, they allow bad players to get too many easy kills (a lot of players have just tried to stick me instead of even firing their gun, we’re not playing mario, this is a shooting game, I dont want fireballs thrown at me constantly) and combined with a plasma pistol against vehicles = dead vehicles everywhere.

Boltshot needs to be nerfed, its too long range and should use up all of the charge in the magazine not half.

Pulse grenades need to be buffed, they should act as mini power drains a lá halo 3, otherwise its just too hard to get kills with them

invisibility should not be an AA, its not halo when you can spawn with a power up all the time. camo snipers ruin Ragnarok (along with jetpacks), people camping is not Halo. If you want it, it should be an ordnance drop. or spawning the map just like halo 1, 2, and 3.

Jet pack should also be ordnance, the fact that it completely negates map control and cover means bad players can just keep going one for one as they kill people then are killed in return, and they can get to areas of maps too easily by just spawning with this AA.

Needler should be made world ordnance instead of personal, who wants this gun when you could have a rocket launcher or a sniper? It only comes with two magazines too, making it run out of ammo way too easily. Its infuriating when I get it when enemy players end up with binary rifles and other power weapons on their first ordnance. It would also free up space to give players jet packs and invisibility if you would do that instead of letting people ruin game play of everyone else by spawning with these abilities.

  1. Join In Progress (JIP) is a good idea but is really not good in practice, please either make it so you only join a game in which there is at least 50% of the game to go and/or that the score between the teams is around a 10% - 25% differential between them.

Fixing it would also include allowing players to switch the option off when they search in matchmaking. The reason that JIP is so annoying is that most of the games you join are empty for a reason, one team is dominating and the other team has almost completely left. a visible skill system would help stop this from occuring since people would have an indicator of how good other players are.

I know JIP is your baby, but you should really change the diaper.

  1. Please turn down auto aim and bullet magnetism, people (including me) are getting too many kills due to this. combined with the DMR its rather ridiculous. Thanks.

  1. Map issues:

Flag spawn on Complex needs to be changed, its too asymmetrical at the moment with one spawning in a choke point next to a lift and one being out in the open, put them in the bases on top of them in cover, it would make for a better map. The map design is actually pretty good. But it only works better with larger teams otherwise it is a little too big for 4v4.

Exile needs either two tanks or two gauss hogs, both put equidistant from both start spawns(or move the start spawns) its really unbalanced at the moment, rocket placement should be top middle too. Change the height of the jump boxes as well, they are annoyingly hard to jump on unless you have a jetpack. the frame rate issues on the map could also be stopped by taking that weird base out in the middle and replacing it with something else. something you probably cant do now because the game has also been released but oh well. This is probably one of my least favourite maps due to the amount of spawn camping and DMR training ranges that seem to litter the map. It needs an overhaul to make it more fun to play

Solace is just the bridge-part off Narrows, it promotes too much camping and discourages assault based game play, moving anywhere just seems like you get lit up by the snipers and DMRs, if you added a 3rd level (more bridges and cover, as well as ease of movement from horizontally, then it would be a much better map.
(saying that I do like the crazy fire-fights that end up happening until someone pulls out a boltshot)

Meltdown could do with more flanking routes and more high ground. the honeycomb caves are pretty cool though.

Abandon is terrible for symmetrical capture the flag, please remove it from the playlist.

Unblock the tunnel for Longbow in Dominion, it would make game play flow faster.

Vortex, Haven and Adrift are all really good maps, thanks for making them

  1. Please bring back the customisability of Halo 3-esque custom games back, the creativity of what could be made kept me hooked on the game for years. If you do this, then I think the community will flourish. At the moment there is even less customisation than Reach, which is a real shame. Please allow people to make awesome games and maps again(they are both one and the same). Thanks

Also a Classic playlist please

Thanks for reading. I know there seems to be a lot of negative but I do appreciate everything you’ve done in this game! Its hard to come back from a game like Reach and sort Halo out to make the fans happy.

Also TL;DR:

343i thanks for trying to save Halo! Just keep, keeping it up! People are going to complain regardless, but don’t blind-side the community like Bungie did either. Balance is the key.

Regards,
A fan since 2001

P.S. I’ll probably send this as an email at some point, I just wanted to see what you guys think?

Most likely, you’re not getting any replies because noone has anything to comment on. This thread is spot on, and the first one so that I’ve seen on waypoint. We’ve seen a lot of threads, though, and while 343 do read them I think they know most of this already, and it’s getting kinda old making threads about it :stuck_out_tongue: do email it though! Good read

343 sucks so far. Especially with multiplayer. You shouldn’t of wrote half the things you did, 343 should have already had them. But I guess modern game developers are suffering from dumb syndrome. To bad they won’t read this.

This. I haven’t seen anyone else bring this up and I wish this was something more people would agree on.

I never bother getting the warthog now. Its as if they are made out of paper now!

Seriously?

Much of these could be seen as posts from a bad player. Why? Because when I play badly I suffer these problems.

  1. DMR ROF is fine. Just that the other guns can’t compare. (Jeez. Over 1000 threads on the same thing and people still don’t get it?

  2. Uh, no? The Gauss Hog is practically OP. The Rocket Hog actually seems useful. The Normal Hog takes skill to ride turret; Its an objective vehicle. And the ghost shouldn’t be used with splatters in mind.

  3. I never JIP. Never. Why? Because I know when it happens, and it takes me about 3 seconds to back out and join again. And 80% of the time it’s an all new game; I play with friends.

  4. Plasma Pistol is fine. If you’re driving a Warthog into a fray of enemies, you’re dumb.
Plasma grenades are fine, same reason. Half the time my stickies go through people anyway.
Boltshot doesn’t need a nerf; it needs to be modified. Only dumb players get killed by a weapon like that; I mean, if he’s sitting behind a corner while knowing you are there, chances are he has a gun that can kill you in 1 hit.
Pulse grenades don’t need a buff. I get kills with them fine; Just know where to throw them.
Uh huh no. Jetpack isn’t that good in this game. Map isn’t broken. And, seriously? You get killed by Jetpackers? And you can call them bad kids?
Camo doesn’t effect me. Chances are, I’m the one on top middle with a Sniper Rifle and I never run camo because of how useless it is unless you’re getting spawn killed.
And the needler is fine. It can get clever players free kills. That’s it. I’d much rather have people get the Needler than getting Rockets, SNipers or Incineration cannons like they always -Yoinking!- do.

  5. Complex Map design good? Yeah, sure. More like Active-Camo-to-Middle-Building-with-CQB-weapons=win. It’s THE worse map there is. WHy it’s in SWAT, I don’t know.

Exile doesn’t need 2 Gauss and 2 Tanks. That’ll just ruin the game and remove all map control. Rockets DO spawn on Top Middle. And the jump boxes aren’t hard to jump on. I mean, who would complain for those? Only people would find it hard…That map is one of the most fun I’ve played on, because of the map control there is. Whether it’s fighting cross-map DMR’s inside the Banshee/Tank spawn, or sitting with a Rail Gun in top mid wrecking kids, or holding down the Gauss-hog spawn against twin sided ownage, it’s a team oriented map that’s fun to play on. I’ve never really been spawn camped on that map, and there’s so much cover everywhere that the DMR isn’t OP unless you decide to run across the open areas of the map.

Solace encourages camping? But-but-but what about the power weapons you can grab to wreck the other team?

Meltdown flanking routes? You mean other than the massive amounts of tunnels, the teleporters and side roads you can use?

Abandon IS bad. Until you gain map control :open_mouth:

No, it wouldn’t. There’s a good reason there’s a tunnel, and that is to stop Point B from being a spawn-camped location.

6-7. Yes.

Many things you pointed out can be fixed simply by playing clever. I’d much have them add a 6v6 OBJ or Big Team Battle back in/i], which would solve just about everybody’s problem.

I have to partially agree with Jl1223 X in saying that the DMR ROF is fine, what needs to happen is the BR needs to get beefed up so that 10 bullets pop the opponents shields rather than the 12 that it currently takes. This way the BR goes back to a midrange 4 shot weapon like it was in Halo 2 and 3. I have no idea why 343 would take the legendary Battle Rifle and go and change it to make it suck.

As for the bolt shot, it needs a major tweak in the kill range department. Cutting its effective range would be the easiest way to balance it back out, and therefore it won’t OP and win against the shotgun and scattershot anymore at CQB.

I agree with most of these especially that the warthog needs a health boost. I would say that the reason warthogs die so easily is because the plasma grenade is a loadout weapon. All it takes to kill a warthog is just 2 plasma grenades and most people carry them as their loadout grenades. it makes no sense at all that the only vehicle that requires more than one player to be effective is one of the weakest (I’m mostly talking about the average warthog, not the gauss hog). The only vehicles that a warthog has a chance against are the ghost and mongoose, other than those two, it will most likely lose every battle against another vehicle, even when it has all 3 passengers. It seriously needs some sort of advantage against other vehicles that gives the players an actual chance of survival.

My possible solutions:
A.) give serious health increase
B.) make it more resistant to plasma grenades (make it so it takes at least 3 or 4 plasma grenades to destroy)
C.) make it the only vehicle that is immune to EMPs( experimental idea)
