I know this is an often covered topic in this and other multiplayer games, but I find myself struggling a lot with dealing with the frustration of playing poorly and/or having a streak of bad games. I understand that matchmaking is designed so that you should be ideally winning 50% of your games; that means you are placed at the right rank for your skill level. But I still can’t help but feel like I am constantly outmatched in games? This is likely my own bias, but I seem to observe that when I lose, I often lose by a landslide to people that seem ridiculously more skilled than me, for example, with a KDA of something like 20/8/5. On the other hand, every game that I do manage to win, I barely scrape by with a marginally positive KDA and we maybe win 50/48. I guess what it feels like is that when I win, I’m the worse person on my team, and when I lose, I’m the worse person on my team, and I can’t help but feel a little bit defeated sometimes. I do understand that this is just a game and I don’t need to/shouldn’t be taking it so seriously, but it is a little frustrating sometimes because I am genuinely trying but not getting very positive results. How do you guys approach matchmaking in a productive and healthy manner?
If this is relevant at all, I almost exclusively play Team Slayer and I generally hover around Diamond 1.
I understand what you’re feeling. The frustration comes from the inability to produce results as an individual. Halo 5 Team Slayer is heavily team oriented, so you have to rely on a good team and communication. Compared to the last few Halo games, Halo 5 has the most weight in team playing, which I don’t like. So you shouldn’t play by yourself. I’d love to play with teammates, but I’m not able to communicate because I’m deaf. What I’ll do is stay close to a teammate until this player dies, and I’ll hurry up to find another teammate to avoid being ganged up on. So yeah, try to stay with a teammate as much you can.
Halo 5 has the most “Randomness” inside of the game.
This is because of how fast the movement speed is, and how players are able to move around the map. Instead of controlling top-middle or any important positions on the map like the rest of the Halo games, being able to sneakily pop up and get the first few shots on a target is incredibly important. Fast kill times and extremely accurate weapons means that you have less time to react, and a less chance to get a reversal.
In order to combat this movement in game, players need teammates to help watch certain areas of the map. I second what SoulxFigmentk said, in the fact that Halo 5 is the most team-oriented game, and the least independently-oriented game. The top three professional Halo teams right now have the best 12 players in my opinion. No single player who can out-skill and destroy everyone else can dominate a game like in the past Halos.
Halo 5 is a competitive-focused game as well. If you want to kick back and just play Halo, you can’t really do that. Unless you want to play BTB, Griffball, or Fiesta, you have to play ranked. I wish this would change.

Lol. I played 4 or 5 WZ games last night and didnt win a single one. Granted, i queue’s solo so i dont expect much. I honestly dont care about winning, just trying to have fun
Halo 4 multiplayer is very relaxed if you feel like a break from H5, BTB is good fun and the pace is fine, I get frustrated at not doing well at times also , that’s natural as doing well = more fun and an enjoyable game experience, anyway just a thought for you mate…
I’ve been having horrible losing streaks lately, and quitters as well that make me want to quit matches myself. I’ve normally been managing daimond rank in the last few seasons but this time i straight placed gold 6. I’ll hop on amd have like 2 or 3 at most wins, some close and maybe 1 landslide. Then the games like… nah buddy… not tonight. Bam I’ll lose every single match after. It’s almost luck based man. Then there’s randoms vs teams which obviously randoms are at a disadvantage.
Really frustrating dude. Especially getting stupid messages sometimes. Just turn the game off when you get really frustrated or play customs in the customs lobby. That’s all you can do.
On another note I feel that the populations also to blame. The more new games that come out the more players leave leaving behind people who tend to squad up and generally take halo 5 more seriously. So right now everyone’s on star wars in my friends list except maybe a few people who rarely team with me anymore. I’ve notice their ranks plummeted this season too.

this is one of the reasons because i don’t like H5…

Lol I don’t remember winning anymore. I had the same experience.
I know the feeling in the last 7 months only needed 5 win in strongholds…i still have 3 to go. I know i dont play as much. But man everytime that mode pops up me nor my team cant cap anything for long. I have lost sooo many games.
Just don’t sweat (if you are sweating ,of course) it seems to me like when I just sit back and play for fun I play so much better than when I’m being a sweaty tryhard and halo 5 is very team focused like a lot of other people said

Not totally accurate. The system is designed to try and match you up so that you have a 50% chance to win any single (team) game. Of course the system can only hope to manage that under the most ideal of circumstances. If it just wanted you to win 50% of your games, that would be far, far easier to accomplish and much, much easier to notice.
That is all.
P.S. And like others have mentioned, if you’re not playing with a team, you’re destined to go through much suffering, not because teams are necessarily better (a lot of them are, though), it’s more because you can’t count on Random teammates from game to game.
I’m a little late getting back to this thread, and I don’t know if any of y’all will even see this, but I appreciate all the feedback! I do feel like a large part of it is my mentality when I approach gaming, so I’ll need to work on that, but in terms of tangible changes, I suppose I’ll invest in a headset and start communicating with other players and see how that works out! Thanks y’all.

If I don’t Sweat then I’m dealing with Sweats every match

Which should yield a 50pct win/loss. If it isnt around 50pct the system will take that into account and adjust your MMR accordingly so that you will start winning 50pct.
If you get mad or frustrated just stop playing for a few minutes or so as in take a break. If you play while frustrated at the game you’re just gonna do worse.

No, it wouldn’t necessarily. Just because I have a 50/50 chance to win a single game does not mean after 50 games, I will have won 25 of them. I could win all 50 of them, or lose all 50 of them, and everything in between. That’s what it means to have a 50% chance to win any single game I go into. The system does not care how many games I’ve won or lost, nor does it care if my total win percentage is at, above, or below 50%, it just wants to try and give me a game where I have a 50% chance to win.

Bro I’m sorry but have you taken a statistics class before? If you lost all 50 games it would be a statistical miracle. The more games you play the closer your percentage should get to 50pct if the system is working.

Yes, a statistical miracle, but still a possibility in a system that tries to give you a 50% chance to win any single game you go into.
