Will halo 4 have any type of security to prevent DDOS attacks. On halo 3 team doubles the amount of packet flooding attacks you get is ridiculous. These middle school kids don’t even realize what they are doing. They don’t understand that it is a very big crime and that they are interfering with a service someone pays for and compromising their security.
Most of you will tell me the servers just have little support. I use wireshark to monitor my network when playing halo. Cheating was the problem with the level system not boosters. The so called “banhammer” doesn’t seem to work on ddos attacks.
The only fix i can think of is dedicated servers. That way people connect to 343 and not each other. There is no sharing of information with random players/ cheaters

would be better if you explained DDOS attacks are for those who don’t understand
Please don’t “shamelessly bump” threads. Thanks.

Dedicated servers won’t fix DDOS attacks

Will someone please explain what DDOS attacks are?

I want to know this too, what’s a DDOS attack?

everyone is referencing this but they are not explaining it!! It Boggles my mind
Ah yes. Peer to peer’s dirty little secret. Anyone who think DOS attacks are not the single biggest problem with the game are oblivious to a large number of players using “booters”. Funny thing is the mods seem to be strict here but a well known booter, who is banned from every fan site, posts here and no one seems to care.
By continuing to use peer to peer 343 is essentially telling you that they don’t care about your network security.

In short? A Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack is basically targeting a service or site that host valuable servers. These could range from private servers to high profile servers. Basically they attack by saturating or overloading the target servers or sites with external data or packets, to a point where it either does not respond or responds so slowly that it renders the server completely useless, essentially blocking anyone from using the intended service. That’s the gist of it, how the attack is carried out varies.

Those are pretty big words, mind elaborating?

thank you
> In computing, a denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the efforts of one or more people to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the Internet.

A match is a competition.
People want to win.
Peer to peer hands your competitor everything they need to attack your network.
There is a solution, dedicated servers, but 343 is not implementing them.

So I’m going to assume that you know exactly how the security is coded within the Halo 4 P2P network right?
I understand what you are saying don’t get me wrong. But online security has certainly come a long way…compared to say the Halo 2 days of standbying/forced host. Unless you know exactly how the security within the network is coded, saying they don’t care is big words that you simply cannot back up.

No. It really hasn’t.
Ok. I guess we’ll agree to disagree. Have a nice day!

It hasn’t? Quick question. Have you been standbyed recently?
Feel free to run from this discussion, but I’m honestly trying to figure out how it has not improved in the last decade.

I know people who still bridge host in reach. People still standby in Halo 3 but the worst problem is the DDoS attack that still occur in social Reach.
Laughably, people believe that the ranking system is the cause of cheating when it has nothing to do with it. The fact that people can and do get away with it is why it happens.
FYI, I have been “hit offline” more times in Reach social than Reach Arena and the entirety of Halo 3 combined.

Ahh well that’s interesting. Honestly In the 14 days playtime I have on Reach, I have not been DDoS’d and I don’t even play arena. Guess I’m missing out on all the fun

Young or just not versed in technology beyond pushing buttons and flipping switches?
In short one person or many will attempt to either slow down communications to the point of it being essentially inoperable or bring it to a dead halt in one of several fashions.
Ever notice how if alot of people try to connect to something at the same time it starts slowing down for everyone? Basically in this case one guy or several will artificially replicate this. Could be so simple as 10,000 packets a second reading “I Love Kittens”, to malformed ping packets causing a crash, etc.
