SPOILER ALERT: Zombies, in AMC’s TV series “The Walking Dead”, die when shot in the head; shooting them in the body does virtually no damage.
Daryl’s signature weapon is a crossbow. Similar to the Boltshot, this weapon must be charged before it can be fired. Unlike the Boltshot, Daryl’s Crossbow must achieve a headshot to kill a zombie.
A zombie is similar to a player with an Overshield in that they both can absorb many bodyshots. Unlike an Overshield enemy, a zombie can be killed with a single headshot. The unique dichotomy between a zombie’s two damage resistance levels, between headshots and bodyshots, allows for two drastically different situations to play out depending on shot placement.
Zombie is hit in the body, taking virtually no damage.
Zombie is hit in the head, taking fatal damage.
If the charged Boltshot fired a single high-damage bolt, rather than a multitude of low-damage projectiles, it would behave more like Daryl’s Crossbow.
If the Boltshot’s charged bolt ignored shields, passing through all shield layers without damaging them, and dealt one hitpoint of headshot-capable damage to health, it would further emulate Daryl’s Crossbow. One charged headshot would kill an Overshield player (the zombie) while a charged bodyshot would do nothing. The risk becomes higher because the weapon demands a greater level of greater accuracy now but the reward is also increased because a charged headshot kills any player regardless of shield level.
Too bad Spartans aren’t Zombies.
An interesting proposal. Would that be balanced for non-overshielded players? Would it need to be (that is, would you want your altered Boltshot to still be a loadout weapon)?
> Too bad Spartans aren’t Zombies.
You sure? A fairly reliable source tells me that John-117 was both the demons and a zombie.
EDIT Sorry, mis-read the original post.
I still think an instant-kill - charge up + headshot or not - on a loadout weapon is too much. Map Pickup weapon maybe, but not with one you can spawn with.

The Loadout Weapons would consist of the three Utility Weapons and the Assault Rifle.
Potential Kill Times – Fastest to Slowest
-1.0 sec – Magnum – semi auto, 4 shot kill, 8 shot magazine
-1.1 sec – Carbine – semi auto, 7 shot kill, 18 shot magazine
-1.2 sec – Battle Rifle – three round burst, 10 bullet kill, 36 bullet magazine
-1.4 sec – Assault Rifle – full auto, very large clip
Players would not spawn with a “sidearm” because there is no such thing as a “secondary weapon” in an arena shooter like Halo.

So no OSK on spawn; that’s good. Would you class your Boltshot as a mid-tier power weapon, akin to the Conc Rifle, or a top-tier weapon, akin to the Sniper?
Make it a map pick up. A all or nothing weapon sounds fun. oh the possibilities in customs

I classify it as an Anti-Overshield weapon. If I had to classify it as something it would be a skill based power weapon like the Sniper Rifle. You have Incentive Power Weapons that are easy to use effectively, like the Rocket Launcher or the Shotgun, and you have Skill Based Power Weapons that are difficult to use effectively like the Sniper Rifle or Grenade Launcher.
Anti Overshield? Soooo, you want to make it a gun that can either shoot like a normal pistol, or over-charge to take out an enemy’s shield? I have an idea! What if you could also overcharge to disable vehicles momentarily, too?

What he said was if you charge it up and shoot someone’s head, it is a one-shot kill even if they do have an overshield. Instant kill if hits the head, no questions asked, ifs ands or buts - they die.
It hits anywhere else, and it just brings down their shields.
I see the analogy you’re making though, and the Plasma Pistol isn’t headshot capable though the Boltshot is.

The charged bolt does not interact with shields at all. It passes through shields without damaging them. In the eyes of the charged Boltshot, every player is shieldless.
> It hits anywhere else, and it just brings down their shields.
No. If a charged bolt impacts a player’s body it does 0 hitpoints of shield damage and 1 hitpoint of health damage which is virtually no damage. Shields are not affected at all by the charged bolt.
