Custom Game / Player Traits heading into Infinite

I love me some custom games. A weekly meet up of Halo fans to chew the fat and t-bag over a few beers. And part of keeping it fresh is mixing things up with some custom tweaks…

At the moment we have a single ‘player trait’ that is applied universally to all players. Within that trait group we can tweak; shields, health, damage resistance, weapons, melee, grenades, the motion sensor, thrusters, spartan charge, ground pound, stabiliser, base movement, sprint, jump, and power up behaviour.

Some good options for sure… but a little limited in terms of game play.

From scripting we actually have access to four player traits (alpha, bravo, charlie, and delta). But it’s difficult to control the selection of players and therefore how / when to assign the traits. It only really works well with custom power ups.

What we need heading into Infinite is;

  1. More trait groups (alpha through zulu).

  2. The ability to pick or assign trait groups in the pre-game lobby.

  3. Extended traits that include;

  • a) Team and/or colours.
  • b) Starting weapons.
  • c) Score modifiers (for and against the kill).
  • d) Starting equipment.
  • e) More weapon options (including preventing some classes being picked up).
  • f) More shield options; currently we have vampirism… but it would be good to have decay, leaching, spread, etc.

Currently scripting revolves around acting on someone dying. What we need is to be able to determine who was the killer and with what. That would open up a whole world of custom possibility.

And finally… some sort of bench rotation system. I want to play with uneven teams… or more players than the map ideal… and have players rotated in/out with each death. So in the event we have seven players (it happens often) we can play 3 v 3 with 1 on the bench.

With these few relatively minor tweaks we could easily set up our own infection and juggernaut type games (for a start). And it would be awesome for handicapping players and having even (fun) games with groups of disparately skilled players.
