Custom Challenges - The Guide

Part 1: A summary of how to create/submit challenges

I hope this answers some questions. Details of specific Types in a later post.

Please post Custom Challenge queries to the Halo: Reach forum

General info:
Halo: Reach Custom Challenges (CC) were introduced by 343i in October 2011 to allow players to create their own challenges for fun and profit.
There are 4 basic Types to choose from, covering all playlists. Each Type has a maximum cR payout per challenge:

Type…max cR payout
Custom…2000
Campaign…5000
Multiplayer Firefight…10000
Multiplayer Matchmaking…30000

The actual cR awarded for each CC is factored from the various options you choose when you create it. The award is not rank-dependent - a Recruit will get the same award as an Inheritor.
The cR contribute towards your daily total, which is capped at 200,000cR (as at 14/03/12) - the total resets at midnight, your local console time.
343i may occasionally change the cR weighting for different elements. This may be announced on Waypoint, or you may notice changes to the cR payout for a CC. These changes are normally implemented on a Wednesday for one week.

Visit the Dashboard:
Log in to Waypoint with your LiveID. All Challenges are visible in your Waypoint profile at https://halo.xbox.com/en-us/Career/Challenges. This shows details and status of the regular Daily and Weekly Challenges set by 343i and is where you can view your Historical and Active CC, create new CC and accept Invites from friends to complete CC they have created.
CC can also be accessed via mobile using the Halo Waypoint mobile app for Windows 7 Phone.

Daily/Weekly Challenges:
Historical advice on these is available at http://reachdailychallenges.wordpress.com/

Overview of creating a Custom Challenge:
Click the “Create a challenge” button in the first empty Active Challenge slot. This will open an options box on the right-hand side. Name the CC, set a Type, Goal, Time and Constraints (if applicable) and Invite Friends.
Once complete, click “Create Challenge” to make the CC active - it is at this point that you will get to see how much cR the Challenge gives.
You can have up to 5 CC active at any time.

Naming:
A CC name can be up to 60 characters, but the Active Challenge will only display the first 25 characters. You can hover over it to see the full text.
The Active Challenge list does not distinguish between CC of different Type with the same Goal, or between types of enemy so it is best to be descriptive with the name, especially if you are going to invite friends. You can click on a CC to view more details on the right-hand side, but even this may not provide enough information to identify the challenge Type.

Setting Challenge Type:
There are 4 Types of CC - Custom, Campaign, Matchmaking Firefight, Matchmaking Multiplayer. Each type is playlist-specific.
Within each Type you must set a Goal (and sometimes a sub-goal) - more detail on this in later post.

Setting Challenge Target:
The Target can be between 1 and 9999. The cR payout scales linearly with the Target i.e. if you double the Target you will double the cR up to the Type cap.

Setting Time Limit:
The time limit can be any whole number of hours between 3 and 60. It modifies the final cR award - the longer the time, the lower the cR for a specific Goal/Target combination, so to maintain a consistent cR award for a Goal you will need to increase the Target as you increase the time. The cR payout does NOT scale linearly with the time limit (I need to work out the scaling - a set of figures are included later)

Setting Constraints.
No constraints are available for Multiplayer challenges. The Custom Type allows you to select a specific Map, and the Campaign Type allows you to select a specific Map, Difficulty and Skull combination. Maps do not modify the cR award, but Difficulty and Skulls do. Unsurprisingly, higher Difficulty and more Skulls will increase the cR award.

By juggling the structure and options it is possible to get the maximum cR for the minimum work. The structure and options for each Type are discussed in later sections.

Invite friends:
A key feature is the ability to invite friends to complete the CC as well. This does not mean they have to be co-op. The timer starts at the same time for all players, so make sure your friends know you are setting a CC, or allow sufficient time for them to accept and complete.
Friends get an XBox Live message to let them know you have invited them to a CC along with a brief summary (no indication of cR though), but they will need to go to Waypoint to accept the invite. As mentioned, good naming is important.

Cancel challenge:
If you decide you do not want to create the CC, click “Cancel.” You will be asked to confirm that you wish to cancel. Sometimes this message will appear towards the top of the screen and you will need to scroll up to see it. Click OK to cancel.

Create challenge:
When you click “Create challenge”, one of 2 things will happen:
1 - the CC is created and will appear in the Active list on the left
2 - the message “Error Creating Challenge. You already have an active Challenge with the same Goal type.” appears. This will happen if you are trying to create a CC with the same Type and Goal as an existing CC - incompatabilities are discussed in later sections. To resolve this, click OK and change the Type and/or Goal to one that is compatible. Sometimes this message will appear towards the top of the screen and you will need to scroll up to see it.

cR award:
The cR award depends on the CC settings and modifiers - guides to cR awards are given in later sections for each Type.

Completion:
You can view the status of your CC by refreshing the Challenges page. You will need to have finished a relevant game/campaign mission for your Target value to increase. It may take a minute for the latest results to be reflected on Waypoint. If the status doesn’t change it is likely you are doing a playlist that is incompatible with the Challenge Type.
You can turn-in CC as soon as you have reached the Target - click the completed Active Challenge and on the right-hand side click “Turn-in.” The CC will show as “Completed” to begin with, and this will change to “1st Place” once the cR are awarded.
Although Waypoint says the cR will be awarded when the Time expires, the cR will usually display within a few minutes.
If you don’t turn-in, cR are automatically awarded for a completed CC once the time you set expires.

Non-Completion:
If you do not complete a CC within the specified time it will be automatically removed from your Active Challenge list and show as “Failed” in your Challenge History.

Forfeit:
If you decide you do not want to complete an Active Challenge, you can either let time run out and it will be automatically removed, or you can click on the active CC and choose to Forfeit from the details panel on the right-hand side. You will be asked to confirm that you wish to forfeit. Sometimes this message will appear towards the top of the screen and you will need to scroll up to see it. Click OK to forfeit.
This will show as a “Forfeit” in your Challenge History

Part 2: Specific Challenge Type details

Quick summary on how to achieve max cR payout in 3hrs for main Goals (no constraints):

Type…cR cap…K/M/W#…Headshots…Wins
Multiplayer Matchmaking…30000…707…354…71(!!)
Multiplayer Firefight…10000…785…393…n/a
Campaign *…5000…1177…589…n/a
Custom…2000…to do…to do…to do

Kills/Medals/Kills with Weapon

 • Campaign has Skull and Difficulty modifiers which can significantly reduce these figures

Notes on Challenge Types:

In the tables below, Target:cR is an arbitrary choice of target with a 3hr time limit designed to give a baseline cR award.
e.g. Kills…100:4249 means 100 Kills in 3hr will give 4249cR

Max-1:cR is the maximum target with a 3hr time limit that will NOT exceed the cR cap for the Type - recommend using this as it makes payout changes immediately obvious. If you want to hit the cap each time just add 1 to the Max-1 for the target.

Constraint indicates which modifiers apply (see later for details)

Incompat shows which Goals (and Sub Goals) cannot be used with the specified Goal.

Multiplayer Matchmaking:

Goal…Target:cR…Max-1:cR

You cannot have an MF Kills and MF Kills of Enemy challenge active at the same time (although you can have multiple MF Kills of Enemy). Although you can create other challenges at the same time as a new Headshot challenge, if you have an active Headshots challenge you cannot create any new Firefight challenges until the Headshots challenge is finished.

Incompat: You cannot have a Campaign Headshot and Campaign Medal challenge active at the same time. You cannot have a Campaign Kills and Campaign Kills of Enemy challenge active at the same time (although you can have multiple Kills of Enemy)

Custom:
Probably won’t bother with this section!

Part 3: Constraints

To calculate cR based on time and constraints, multiply the Base cR given above for the game type/goal by each of the relevant values below

Time:
Time (hr)…Multiplier
3…1
4…0.89
5…0.82
6…0.77
7…0.74
8…0.71
9…0.69
10…0.67
20…0.57
30…0.53
40…0.51
50…0.49
60…0.48

Map:
Any…no modification of cR payout

Difficulty:
…Easy:…1.0
…Normal:…1.1
…Heroic:…1.2
…Legendary:…1.3

Skulls:
…Iron:…0.05
…Black Eye…0.1
…Tough Luck…0.1
…Catch…0.1
…Cloud…0.05
…Famine…0.05
…Thunderstorm…0.2
…Tilt…0.05
…Mythic…0.25
…Blind…0.05
…Cowbell…0.0
…Grunt b’day…0.0
…IWHBYD…0.0

Skull modifiers need to be added together and added to 1 before using in calculations.
If you play Mythic (LASO + Blind) this is 100% increase in cR (and a 50% reduction in the target you need)

These calculations are almost correct - any suggestions welcome.

For example, Campaign, 100 kills in 6 hours, Legendary with Mythic and Thunderstorm would be 425 x 0.77 x 1.3 x (1 + 0.25 + 0.2) = 616 cR
(actually 621cR - the time is inaccurate and a small Base value makes for approximations)

Alternatively, if you wanted to max the same challenge 5000 cR, it would take 5000/(425 x 1.3 x (1 + 0.25 + 0.2) )= 7.83 x 100 kills = 783 kills

Part 4: Miscellaneous notes and FAQ

Q. What’s the minimum target I need to get maximum cR for each basic challenge?
A. Assuming a 3hr time limit, no special bonuses active, and you don’t change any constraints:

Multiplayer (30,000 cR)
707 Kills/Medals
354 Headshots
71 Wins

Firefight (10,000 cR)
785 Kills/Medals
393 Headshots

Campaign (5,000 cR)
1177 Kills/Medals/Kills with Weapon
589 Headshots

Q: Will I get banned for racking up lots of points using Custom Challenges?
A: No. Custom Challenges are cR Farming - this is allowed. Boosting is not.

Q: But I did get banned for using Custom Challenges!
A: In that case take it here for discussion.

Q. I took it there but I’m still banned!
A. My heart bleeds for you. You must have been really bad in a previous life.

Q. Is it true I can get lots of Custom Challenge cR goodness with the Target Locator?
A. Using the TL is unsporting and will cause all your limbs to fall off. It’s not nice.

Q. Can I speed up the management of Custom Challenges?
A. There are “custom challenge macros” available to automate a lot of the work. WDIGTFY.

Q. I can’t set up challenges - the servers are under maintenance?
A. It happens. Hopefully the maintenance period was announced beforehand in a suitable thread (but don’t hold your breath).

Q. I’ve set up a challenge and played a game but no kills/medals etc. are showing?
A. First make sure you have picked the correct playlist for the challenge type, and that you are meeting all the constraints you set (Map/Difficulty/Skulls). You must complete the game/mission before the kills/medals etc are added to your challenge score. It may also take a couple of minutes for the score to update after you finish a game - wait and then refresh the challenges page.

Q. I’ve turned in a couple of completed challenges but the cR are not showing?
A. Despite what Waypoint says when you turn-in challenges, the cR are generally awarded within a couple of minutes of expiring or turning in a completed challenge. Make sure the history shows the challenge as “1st Place” and allow up to 10 minutes for the cR to register after this. I’m not aware of any reason why they wouldn’t be awarded except if you have exceeded the daily 200,000 cR cap.
Most custom challenge cR are added in the background while playing a subsequent game. There’s no fanfare or fireworks or pop-up, just an increase in cR.

Q. Seriously, 343i are robbing me blind!
A. sigh The only way to be convinced you have the cR is to keep a log of your cR.
Next time, wait 5 minutes after completion of a challenge before you turn-in. This will ensure that the servers are up to date with your most recent game cR. Then, check your cR on your profile (Waypoint or XBox) and write it down. Now turn-in the challenge and wait for 10 minutes - check your profile periodically and you will see the cR added.
Alternatively, at the start of a days session write down your cR and then all the cR you get from games/daily challenges. Let your completed custom challenges expire overnight. Next day compare totals and you will see the cR added.
I’ve used both methods and have always seen the cR appear.

Q. I’ve turned in a couple of FF Kills of Enemy challenges and want to create new ones, but it’s telling me I already have the type active?
A. There seems to be a bug that does not allow you to create new challenges when you have an active Headshot challenge in FF. You will need to wait until the Headshot challenge is finished. Use a Medal challenge instead as a workaround.

Q. There’s a 5x bonus on Grunt kills this week - what are good settings?
A. Try these on Matchmaking Firefight (Gruntpocalypse):
51 Grunt Hero: 10,000 cR
76 Grunt Specialist: 10,000 cR
200 Headshots: 5099cR
120 Grunt Infantry: 7648cR
Turn-in the first three after 2 games, recreate (you must create the Kills of Enemy challenges before the Headshot challenge - see above) and then turn-in all four after another 2 games. This will net you 57,846 cR plus whatever you get for 4 games.
If you are not confident of getting the Headshots in 2 games (which will stop you setting up the Kills of Enemy challenge for the third game), an alternative is to go for 400 Medals and turn-in at the 4th game.
You can tweak the Headshots/Grunt Infantry figures if you wish - these are intended to give some slack to allow for AI suicides and other missed kills. Don’t change the Hero/Specialist figures - you won’t get any better return.

Q. There’s a bonus on skulls this week - how do they work? (added 31-Aug-2012 )
A. Under normal circumstances, the primary skulls and Blind will each add a percentage to the cR you get for a Campaign Custom Challenge. Having all these on will add 100% to the base cR you would get with no skulls on. For the skulls custom challenge, each of these will increase the payout by 10% of the base cR as well as by its own normal modifier. Putting on any one of Cowbell, IWHBYD or Grunt Birthday (which don’t normally change the cR) will also add 10% - putting on two or three of these won’t make any more difference.
So overall by putting all skulls on, you can get an extra 210% above the base cR.

Q. There’s a 3x bonus on Catch skull this week… (added 06-Sep-2012)
A. Catch normally adds 10% to the payout. 3x bonus adds 30%. For example:
200 kills in 3hr without constraints is normally 850 cR. Adding catch will get you 1105 cR.

Is there like a picture guide of the types of enemy’s ? because i don’t know wich are which that way i can plan accordingly , btw the credit farming is borning & you will only get 5grand for each enemy so i thought if i was going to branch out id need a way to identify which enemys are which so i can setup campign runs & revert & save there as well but firefight seems the easiest way to get tons of credits like me for instance i get 8 grand for 500-600 kills if i played all day i could make up some ridculous number & get buckoo credits

WHAT DO U GO TO CREATE A CHALLENGE

Quick question, can you ‘turn-in’ credits FOR a friend you’ve set the challenge for? So say I set a custom challenge for a friend for 3 hours, and they get it within 30 minutes, If I turn in the challenge, will they get the credits for it or do they HAVE to go on waypoint to accept the challenge?

Was their really a need for this thread to be revived after almost 2 years? If you have a question please make a new thread rather than revive extremely old ones.

A thread this detailed and potentially helpful to people with questions doesn’t need to go anywhere fast. There’s nothing better to have up here anyways wannabe mod.
