Currents thoughts on the Updated Forge Mode?

So Halo 4 looks like its pimping out its forge mode quite a bit.
And yeah it looks good.

But… it’s got 3 “themes” to change the look of the map, and that’s it.

Don’t you think 3 themes are a little… minimal?
I was really hoping they’d tackle that issue a little better.
We’ll get another predicament like Reach where every map starts to look repetitive and then everyone starts moaning about it.

What are your thoughts?

I never really expected us to get much more than what we got with Reach b/c 343i is pouring so many resources into making the rest of the game as best it can. All I really expected was a polished version of Reach’s Forge where we got some new Forging environments (check), better performance-based pieces (check), a few new features thrown in to mix things up a bit (check), and hopefully some bug/glitch fixes (crosses fingers). Overall, I’m happy with what we’re getting, but not exactly overwhelmed with excitement for it. It’s what I expected it to be so I can’t really ask for anything more when we’re getting so much with the rest of the game.

To answer your question, we aren’t really getting 3 themes for the same map. We’re getting 3 maps w/ their own theme. Think of it like they took Forge world, split it up into 3 individual maps (because who actually used all of FW anyway), and are giving each space it’s own theme (snow, grass/forerunner, sand, UNSC, etc.) and forge pallet. Basically, it will be like the way it was in Halo 3 where we had a few maps to build on so every map didn’t look the same in the end instead of like Reach where everything was focused on one map.

Off-topic:
I know people are a bit sick of Blood Gulch, but would anyone else like to see our beloved canyon make a return as one of the new forge environments? We may all want a new successor to replace the outdated canyon we’ve been playing in for a decade now, but I think it deserves to live on through custom games. Not to mention the canyon was a pretty useful Forging space in Reach.

I’m quite happy so far. Hopefully they have way more stuff up their sleeves.

Contrary to JD I actually expected a lot, like a full on terrain editor, but I guess I shouldn’t have. The new features are awesome, but it feels more like Forge 2.5 (Halo 3 Forge 1.0, Reach Forge 2.0). But hopefully there’ll be a little more stuff by launch.

Maybe in Halo 5, since I doubt the 360 can handle all that.

Really want to see the other dedicated maps.

Some really good points here.
I also hope there’s something up it’s sleeve, something that’ll pleasantly surprise me.

Then again like JD said I also couldn’t ask for more than this considering what else we’re getting with Halo 4; even if the Forge is sort of 2.5 rather than 3.0

So here’s a question: If the new Xbox is imminent, does that mean we’ve got about one year to play our hearts out with Halo4 before it loses support from 343?

I sorta want to play this game for a long time.

There was a game called Far Cry 2 released 4 years ago in 2008 on 360, PS3, and PC. It had a terrain editor, you could raise/lower the terrain, plants/trees/etc., a water level that you could either raise or lower, ability to make roads and paths, all kinds of objects you could use as detail, weather changing options, and many more cool things. I put so many hours into it, it was like the best map maker ever.

IMO even current consoles could handle these things I just think Halo’s engine needs a “tune-up” to handle these sort of things.

You can check out Far Cry 2’s map editor here: Video

Impressive stuff.

If they didn’t change anything and gave us the same features as Reach, I’d be happy. But Reach had awful, repetitive, grey objects which made custom games and matchmaking bad.

Whilst, now we’ve got three forge environments, without grey objects, with their own unique pallets (set of objects) and their own environments. That alone, revives custom games to its former glory.

I’m so happy with the new forge maps, the new features on top of them just put the icing on the cake. :stuck_out_tongue:
