So what do you guys think is the exact general state of the UNSC atm?
ONI needs to get off their yoinks and actually do their jobs. They haven’t done squat since the flood cover up.
after the guardians showed up, its extremely weakened
After the fall of Reach, I believe it was at a very low point. Not only because of their secondary home fleet destroyed with only a few ships making it out of there, but also because of the loss of most of the spartans. A lot was going on at Reach, research, training and general staging area. With all that lost, there were few things holding back the covenant to reach earth within the year.
Then when the battle of earth happened, humanity and the UNCS were extremely lucky. If Regret would have attacked with a normal fleet, earth would have been done for. After the breach of the battle cluster of Malta/Cairo, and the first attack on Afrika, the UNCS lost a lot of forces. As seen in ODST, we see that the UNSC has huge trouble pushing back the covenant even a bit from earth.
Were it not for the scism, humanity was dead.
Anyhow. We all know what happened. After halo 3 I guess the UNCS came back to some extend, and now they feel stronger than they ever were in the main triology.
I am not fan of “lucky thing” in story. I think Regret attacking with minimal fleet is planned.
Regrest also knows how false/mistaken Covenant religion is, along with Mercy. If we see how Truth calmly lets Mercy dies by the flood, no wonder he does same thing to other one. His death is also stepping stone to replace smart Elites with easier-to-control Brutes, worrying the danger if Elites doubt him as he knows how fearsome they are to their race. Although it still happens thanks to Gravemind.
Between Halo 3 and Halo 4 (I think a 4 year period) and right up to the guardian incidents, the UNSC likely went through a massive rebuilding and innovation process. Having lost millions of marines, army troopers, commanders, vehicles and ships they would have to rebuild all of these and also innovate new stuff to put up more of a fight against plasma and shields (since MAC’s were really the only effective weapon). But after the guardians, well I don’t really know since we see Emps going off above Earth in the last cutscene of Halo 5 and the Infinity running away from 1 guardian.
- Also from Halo Fractures, theres one story, I think its in Sidney (Australia) where some ONI people flee Earth immediately after the guardian shows up. So even ONI don’t seem to have any trick to stopping the guardians (or at least not within 60 seconds or they don’t have it on Earth)
So based on the fact that the UNSC’s most powerful ship couldn’t do anything (and that ONI haven’t done anything), I think most of the rebuilt UNSC is either fighting a losing battle, surrendered or is already dead and Infinity may be the last ship standing.
- really makes me wonder how their going to turn that situation around

It is possible the UNSC/ONI build ships that are in deep space and unknown to Cortana and the Guardians. My guess is that we will see these kinds of stations in Halo 6.
