CTF Scoring Mechanic Improvements

(Warning: Long, but there is a TLDR/Summary)

Hello fellow CTF players.

I play a ton of CTF, and while I love the gametype, I have thought of couple more scoring mechanics that I think would better distribute points for performing objective related tasks, and encourage more teamwork.

Flag Running Points
First, one of the most obvious scoring flaws is when you drag the enemies’ flag to your base alone, die, and then a teammate caps it for +100 points while you get +10 for a capture assist. Yes, this is a team game, but we should be rewarded for doing well in it.

I think this could be remedied by instead giving points to players for moving the flag closer to the score point, and then giving maybe a +25 point bonus for the actual capture. How this would work, is that a player would be given +10 points for every tenth of the way they move the flag towards the objective. So if the distance from your flag to theirs is 200 meters, every time you brought it 20 meters closer to your flag you would gain +10 points.

Since its +10 points per tenth, the total amount is +100 points, or what it is now, but this gives point more accurately to the person(s) running the flag. This could not be abused, because you would only get the points for each tenth. Once a player gets it within 180 yards, they get 10 points, the next point marker would be 160, then 140, then so on.

I think this would make carrying the flag much more attractive, since you don’t have to drag it most the way and die for a big fat 0 points.

Escort Points
I don’t know if something like this is in the game, but either way it would work better with the above flag running mechanic. Other players should be awarded +5 points for being within 20m of the flag carrier each time he hits a marker which gives him his +10. This encourages people to protect the carrier. Not only that, but it encourages people to protect the carrier, and then escort them for the additional points.

Also not sure if this is already implemented, but if not… Killing an enemy player who has LOS, or is within 20m of the carrier should award a player with an additional bonus +5 point for “Carrier Protection.”

TLDR and Summary
Flag carrier should get +10 per 10% of distance traveled to capture point.
Flag capture instead +25
People near flag runner +5 per 10% of distance he travels.
People near flag bonus for protecting carrier.

I love ctf, but that doesn’t mean its perfect! I think these mechanics would improve gameplay, but please, let me know your thoughts!

Agree 100% with your ideas. I love CTF in Halo 4 and we play it quite a bit. I do think the scoring mechanics need an update in the vein you just described.

Definitely support.

Yeah, being the guy to grab the flag out of the enemy’s base is usually a death sentence with no reward. I salute those who charge in, grab it, and run it just far enough for us to get to when they die.

I support.

I love ctf but the hardest part of it has always been getting the flag from the base and to the half way point. why don’t you get something for it even if the doesn’t add to the team score. I once got headshot bout 5 steps from the capture after running the entire field, someone else captured it and got the points and I get nothing hows that fair. sorry if I am whining on…

I like your idea and that would make more sense than the current scoring system. It just doesn’t make sense to get the flag most of the way there but only end up with 10 points while someone who just respawned grabs the flag and takes it a little ways and scores and gets 100 points.

Glad to see other flag runners have noticed this. I don’t fret over the lack of points, but when I see someone come in nearly last place with by far the most flag carry time and few or no caps, I feel sad; especially when its me!

Also, I have been wondering if your in game score contributes to the points you get post game? I seem to get the same, or roughly the same experience every game, whether I get 200 points, or 800+ points. I know winning or losing affects it via victory points, but I get ~2900 every game I win.
