Idk if yall noticed but it seems you can sprint with the fall 2 handed…but if you also pay attention you can also carry the flag on your back giving you full access to your weapons. Also with the flag on your back there seems to be a speed decrease. Let’s get into this.
Me I think it’s interesting. And also would like it to be if u grab a flag you stuck with it until death or point scored. To me that would balance it. I don’t like flag juggling. This removes that need and add more Strategy. Video of phoebaer talking about it

I actively searched for footage of this in the trailer and overview vids but can’t find it anywhere. Can you share a timestamp or something? I guess the decreased movement speed will give you a slight disadvantage, but i’m a fan of a flagcarrier being vulnerable with low defensive capabilities (not opposing the flagnum though).
Concerning your point of not being able to drop the flag or juggle i really don’t agree with. I think juggling is a strategic option for arena style CTF. You move faster, but reveal your location to the enemy (if this still has any value in comparison to being able to sprint with it we’ll figure out in flights). Being able to drop the flag to defend yourself or pass it to a teammate that is waiting on higher ground however seem like basic capabilities you really want for CTF, or any objective for that matter (i.e. assault/oddball).
I really don’t like the flagnum, as others have said I think you should be slower and vulnerable with the flag.
Flag juggling is also essential, it opens up a host of new strategies and makes CTF much more exciting. 5 flag touch return is probably my favourite objective gametype in all of Halo. King of the Hill a very close second.
The trade off of speed but the enemy knows where you are is a risky gambit and becomes essential against higher skilled opponents.
I hope they have many options for the flag, customisation is key so we can have some really nice competitive gametypes and fun BTB flag experiences. I don’t think the flag should handle the same in every game mode.
I don’t understand why 343 is so set on mixing up the CTF gametype, OG CTF is such a strong well-designed game mode, I don’t see it as necessary. Even Flag juggling, despite being unintentional, added a tactical decision to make whether to travel slow and concealed, versus fast but announcing your position to everyone.
I do not like the idea that you can not choose to drop the flag, I suspect this isn’t the case since they said you could store a flag on the back of a Razzor back. I don’t know how these new changes will play out, with a lesser penalty for carrying a flag, an individual may have more of an effect on the score. In fact, scoring may be more common, so I anticipate maybe 5 caps to win a game.

That might actually make CtF fun, but then… CtF sucks as a gametype fundamentally. Idk if carrying it faster is going to make the intrinsic suck-ness of CtF any better.
Yeah I dont think i like that as much. I feel like the only real issue is that once a team scores they play an impenetrable defense, except in 4v4. The changes are great for big team, but kind of -Yoink- for 4v4
But a plus side you can’t have people camp the flag and throw it off a grav lift.
Where is the flag carried on someone’s back? I’ve never seen that.

In the multiplayer video there’s a moment where the flag is picked up by a Spartan but it defaults to his back then looks like it is swapped into his hands.
There’s also speculation where it looks like the flag is apparent on the screen of a player that is using their AR. The presumed red of the flag can be seen flapping above.
While the bottom bit is speculation, the top bit is clear as day. Unless it is some right janky animation at play, it does look like the flag can be placed on your back and then you can use any weapon you want. Can’t say I like that idea at all.

That animation is caused by how the game views the flag. The flag is a weapon, and one that forces your current weapon to holster, and so in this process it replaces your holstered weapon with the flag. The game sees that your holstered weapon is the flag, displays it where holstered weapons always go (your back) and then ‘unholsters’ the flag. If you try holstering the flag, you’ll just drop it. The same thing has happened in basically every halo game after they introduced holstered weapons appearing on your back.

Watched the video, and I have to echo what DeadManUnder said, that looks more like a frame by frame animation that was over analyzed.

I agree after rewatching the video. It definitely is completely unfounded, there’s no reason to suggest the flag goes on your back at all. Must literally be a frame or two as it’s not even noticeable to the naked eye.
This looks like classic CTF, let’s gooo!
The most convincing evidence isn’t the short clip with the flag on his back. It’s at 3:25 in the multiplayer overview where you can see the player’s AR is backlit with red light from the flag and you can also see the red streaming tails that come off the flag at the top of the screen.
Though it is possible the flag carrier is just behind him and he’s protecting him.

Wow amazing that someone caught that detail. It sure seems a flag is either carried on the back or is close behind him, probably the latter. Don’t see a reason why 343i would make such a drastic change to the game type. Thanks for sharing though!
That wouldn’t be new at all, Reach has a CTF variant with the flag in the back.

Yep it’s obvious from that. I saw that thats why I was confident that actually was him putting it on his back. N figure people that watched would put all those clues together in know yes that indeed was him putting it on his back

yeah i’m with you 100% on this one. Having access to a weapon while holding an objective like the flag defeats the purpose of giving you teammates.
From what I could see in the trailer and the overview it definitely seems like you won’t be able to wield a weapon at the same time as holding the flag since the player model uses both hands to hold the flag. This also means that the Flagnum probably won’t be returning as well. As others have said the animation where it appears on the player’s back for a moment seems to be just an issue with the third person animation when viewing someone else with the flag. In first person it should just look like you pick up the flag. I’m personally okay with flag juggling because it comes with the downside of revealing your location to the enemy team every few seconds, although I do hope that the distance you can throw the flag isn’t as far as some of the other Halo games. I don’t think that the person was sprinting with the flag, although they were sprinting right before they picked up the flag. It seems like in multiplayer at least the sprinting speed isn’t much higher than base normal speed at all and there seems to be no delay between exiting sprint and being able to fire your weapon. That could be why the flag carrier seems like they are still sprinting with the flag, although this is pure speculation until we actually get to play the game. It does look like the flag carrier gets no movement penalty at all though. The flag is also probably going to be a one shot melee kill as well since the oddball footage they showed someone getting one shot by the ball.

Actually it doesn’t. So u can get the flag to the enemy base by yourself when I have all 3 of my team attacking you🤔 people are forgetting what the core objective of ctf is. It’s about getting a object from one base to the other base. It’s no way u can do that without ur team…unless the other team is bad.

Go back n rewatch the footage real slow. It’s a point in the vid where you can see the flag stream behind ur back with your gun glowing red from how close it is to your body while your assault rifle is out. While in first person. Not that third person view…keep watching. When the guy has the drop shield n they are fighting by the big door that cracked open
damn, now that’s a great way to overanalyse and overdramatize a simple few frames.
There’s literally no evidence whatsoever and this guy making assumptions based on those
mere frames don’t help either.
I know why I don’t watch those kind of YT shitposts and rather
wait until I can put my own hands on the game.
