I’m over here playing breakout and get 12 kills and died 6 times. I got an extinction medal for killing all 4 of the other oponents single handed. My team mates on the other hand got 0 kills and died 6 times. I did 100% of the work and proved myself to be an exceptional player even when faced against an entire team all by myself yet guess what happened to my rank? It went down, why? Not because of my skill as a breakout player (which is what it should be based on) but because I had bad luck with my team mates. Seriously wins/losses should not impact rank this severely, Im sick of getting -Yoink- ranking because of bad team mates. I am continually playing well and getting punished for it
“After earning your starting rank, the ONLY way to increase your rank is by WINNING. For team-oriented playlists, this emphasizes the importance of team play. Whether you drop 30 kills in a game of Slayer or single-handedly capture every flag in a CTF match, wins are the only way to improve your CSR. As you win, you will progress through the 6 tiers of your rank. If you are skilled enough to continue winning at tier 6, you will advance to the next rank (yay!). Losing games will cause your progress within a rank to decrease, but you will never drop down a whole rank from losing. For example, if you spend all month working your way into Silver, losing won’t drop you back to Bronze.”
You need a team to play with that is at or above your level that you can play with on regular basis. I’m in a similar situation .I’m a gold 6. I play often against Platinums , but I have nobody I can play with on a regular basis as I play 90% of the time on weekend days only. Hard to find people that are on the same play schedule as me. I know I won’t go any higher than where I am unless I can play with an organised team.

Case closed. Team based game. Win as a team, lose as a team, move rank as a team.
You have a 1.2 k/d in Breakout. You seem to be ranked pretty accurately. It’s not as if you are dominating every game.
I feel this guys pain!
I’m so happy that after the placement games, the only way you can rank up is from winning. As people mentioned above me, this is a team oriented game, meaning who cares how well you did, if your team lost, then your rank should go down. Reach tried the individual ranking system, that was a failure the moment that game released. I don’t care how well you did, if your team lost, then the entire team should be penalized.

Yeah thats called me going against 4 people with no help. Breakout also doesnt offer tons of options for kills and dying is easier, K/d in breakout is irrelevant l, many times I sacrifice my life for the win via flag cap. Youll see I have 41 wins and 21 losses thats no from camping in a corner with a BR taking every kill for myself. How the hell do you people support a team based rank system? Im trying to get an idea about how well IM doing not how well my randomly assigned team mates did

I understand you. It happened to me in team slayer and swat.
I was the only one carrying and stil got classified Plat 6 (even if i won 7/10 matches, only thanks to me)

You just cited your skill by discrediting k/d and pointing out your W/L.

I would love to know how the initial ranking system works. For example, last night was the first time me and my buddies played for Feb season. We won the same games, lost the same games- I had a 1.55 KD in the initial 10 “placement games” whereas a friend had a 0.99 KD and he was ranked higher than I was. Can anyone explain how this system works, slowly driving me insane.

who was ranked higher last season? It takes that into account along with you k/d and what ranks you are winning/losing against. If your playing against diamond players and lose it will than face you against platinum. Say you win that, you will be placed in mid platinum roughly. Did he have a higher rank than you at the end of last season cause that could account for him being slightly higher placed.

Because rank is based on wins/losses and not K/D, my K/D would be far far higher if it made any sort of impact, my point is that I threw K/D out the window when I learned it was win and loss based and that pisses me off because it should be based on personal performance, I want a high K/D to matter again like it should. Basically I can toss my life away and run the flag every game and be an onyx player, that seems stupid as hell.
Play FFA to control your own destiny and look at your SR rank as a measure of your accomplishments. K/D, multiplayer ranks mean nothing since they do not reflect solo performance and teams are stacked against a group of individuals unless you also play consistently with a group of players as a team.
All other ranks are based in luck of the draw as a random. I have played against higher and lower ranked people in Slayer and seen many times the higher ones sucked and the lower ones kicked butt.
I see an SR of 100 or greater I can appreciate the amount of work it took to get there.
I see a person ranked “Onyx” in slayer and I think, wow he has some good friends!

You don’t have to be salty about someone being better than you at a game. It’s just a game.

Reach tracked personal performance, and they changed it to W/L.
Your rank benefited from selfish playstyles such as betraying for power weapons, keeping friendly shields down so they’d die, and you could take a kill etc.
Also, when you start matching players your own skill, your K/D would logically move towards 1. Soo, if K/D mattered the way you want it to and think it’d do in a rank system, your K/D would gravitate towards 1. So no, your K/D would not be far far higher if it made any sort of impact.

If it was based on personal performance everyone would play in a selfish manner. You think people shoot their teammates for PWs now? lol, you haven’t seen anything yet.
Reach used individual stats to rank at launch and literally every time you grabbed a PW your teammates would shoot you until the other team killed you. Then they would grab your PW.
Bungie ended up patching the individual ranking system out of the arena portion of the game because of how bad it was.

I agree with this somewhat… Team based ranking would be great if you were assigned to a team and played just with those team mates for the season. But its not so ranking should account for what you did personally somewhat also. I can understand needing to win to improve rank but maybe some other statistics should be considered as well as. Like If your platinum and go up against all diamond, have a k/d over 1 in slayer and lose, then you dont move move down in rank. As the person on your team who WAS diamond and goes 4-16 should move down substantially. IDK but I do feel like the rank system should be more complex than just “Win move up, Lose move down”.

The more complex something is, the easier it is to exploit.

Not to mention, everyone has bad matches, and additionally, anyone’s good in-match stats may as well be because of a player with bad stats, or the other way around, one player with bad stats may as well have those bad stats because of a player getting good stats.
It’s not like everyone is running around not affecting each other. Every action made has an impact on the game and it affects everyone, pretty much whatever you do.
