CSR and why I feel it doesn't work.

I love Halo. Don’t get me wrong, it’s my favourite game series. I stood by Reach, despite the hate. I stood by Halo 4, until now. I find myself really sad when I write these words, but I feel I need to, so others can see my pain.

I got Halo 4 for Christmas, I would have got it day one but I couldn’t afford it. I played through the campaign and loved it, it was phenomenal, despite the flaws in it. I jumped into the multiplayer and despite the faults with the ordinance drops and loadouts, I found myself enjoying the game. The problems were minor in the grand scheme of things. But the community wanted CSR and 343I finally delivered. To be honest, I was excited about it. I was looking forward to playing games that required skill to win and I was looking forward to games that were close and up to the line.

So CSR landed and I played a few games. Yeah at first it felt like nothing had changed, the system was still sorting itself out. And that was fine. Then it started to balance out. A few days ago I had a couple of games that were close and fun. Then it got worse.

The past two days, every game has been hell. I’m a decent player and I don’t expect to get a 50, but I know I’m better than this. Every game has been the same. DMR and Boltshot, Plasma grenades the works. I stick to my BR, I don’t want to use the DMR, because everyone uses it, but I want to have a chance against it.

Take my last game for example. I did so badly that I’m ashamed. But several times I was killed by a DMR user that should have died. It’s bad enough that the DMR is easy as hell to use, the stopping power on it slows me down to a crawl for just enough time that the second bullet can hit me forcing me to repeat the whole thing again, the flinch is ridiculous and it has insane range. I didn’t have a chance using my BR. If I went into a more closequartered area it was the Boltshot that got me. The past few game have been far from fun.

The ordinance has been insane. I played a game on Abandon where the whole enemy team got snipers in their ordinance. I got one sniper once, and the rest of the time it was utter rubbish. Needlers mostly. The random ordinance should not be in any competitive game as it’s random, we don’t even see what ordinance players are calling down as they call it down! The same game I ran round a corner chasing a player I knew for a fact had his shield broken, to see he had called in ordinance when he had rounded the corner and called in a shotgun! He had already turned and blasted me in the face with it before I had a chance to respond!

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a huge competitive player, I stuck to social in Halo 3 for example, but it bothers me that I’m forced to essentially play in a ranked competitive setting. There needs to be a social setting for Halo. Either that or the random ordinance needs to be removed from the playlists and the DMR needs to not be a loadout weapon. Hell, even if they made a gametype where we all started with the same weapons would be better. The current Infinity settings is fine for social, but not for ranked. It needs to go, it’s not fun.

I can safely say that the introduction of CSR was executed so badly that it has made the game incredibly unfun. It has made the game worse, something I thought wasn’t possible. CSR should stay, but the gametypes need to change. But they won’t, because 343I seem to think there is nothing wrong with their precious game.

I barely pay any attention to CSR b/c its just confusing. I only watch my K/D.

Let me show you how CSR doesn’t work with three examples:

Game 1

Game 2

and last but definitely not least… My best example of why CSR doesn’t work…

Game 3

I am really confused at how the matchmaking process works that I get paired up with teams like those three games in a row.

So CSR doesn’t work because other players are beating you?

Sorry, your bf pointed out you may not be addressing me. I apologize.

He wasn’t talking to you. Nice try to you too.

EDIT: nice edit, very big of you to so graciously admit fault. QFT anyways.

Are you his dad? FOH with you too. I’ll edit only for him because you’re probably right.

That ain’t nothin’. I had a rumble pit match where the highest rank was a 46 and the lowest was a 1. Who do you think was at the top, and who do you think was at the bottom? The way they are making matches is a joke right now.

There is now a CSR feedback thread in the war games section. Everyone should leave thier feedback.

you do that.

@Michael - Maybe you should follow the conversation before think every comment is aimed at you. Also linking a few games that you carried the team doesn’t prove CSR is broken. Perhaps if if you were better at the game you could get past CSR 15 and actually play with decent players.

I wanted to play CSR in rumble pit but the ordinance drops in a free for all is horrible, how can somebody spawn a rocket launcher in a free for all and another player gets a needler?

I don’t mind the opponents weapons… what bugs me about CSR is how it alters the way people play. Peeps are far more likely to quit if they don’t like the direction of the game. Leaving me holding the bag. I had a Dominion game where I capture 5 bases and did a slew of other stuff. My mates? They destroyed a few turrets.

I also find that I get angry when mates don’t play well because now the Win means something. Before I just played my best and was happy to do so. My dedication and playing style haven’t changed… but now I suddenly care about how cruddy (or not) my mates are. That Dominion example above wouldn’t have bothered me nearly as much without CSR.

Ranks are fine because people want them, but they belong in their own dedicated partitions.

Oh and be sure to share this in the Matchmaking forum, where you can be sure your feedback will go to the appropriate 343 team!

The Issue with the CSR is that it expands it’s search preference when it can’t find a similar match due to the lack of players.

While on Halo 3 the match was restricted to a 10 skill difference at most. It never went past that line.

The Matchmaking Forum is where threads are sent to die slowly. It is the Gentleman’s Thread Lock.

the low population is a big reason why halo is struggling to match you with players of similar skill. It’s highly variable, I play a lot of swat and it’s a low population list and I am not all that good CSR 25-28 in H4, in H3 I was around a 30 I think. Anyways when I play now some times I dominate lower skilled players, some times it’s a very competitive match and some times I am spawn killed by a team of 50’s and get destroyed. This will be an on going issue with low population.

Team snipers seems to be even worse, generally the people that play that are very skilled with snipers it seems because I almost always get owned in that play list. But I keep plugging on trying to improve.

I don’t know why players would quit if they are playing badly - a quit = the lowest placing in the match, and therefore it is better for your CSR to keep playing the game.

Also I really don’t see the problem with matches becoming meaningful, one of the key reason why so many players quit was because playing competitively became meaningless.

I’ve played three game of Big Team Infinity Slayer since CSR came out. I’ve lost all three.

My win/loss ratio is actually better than yours if that matters.

Personally CSR+JIP is an epic fail in and of itself.
