The ranking, leagues, and seasons need a massive overhaul. I know there were changes made over the last few updates, but they have certainly not been for the better.
If the game is going to dump me in the same rank despite how well I play during placement, then changes are needed to the season periods.
I did a person case study at the start of the season. I did the placement games with the same 3 players for all games and tracked our stats to see how the leagues would place us.
All of them were inconsistent with our individual performances. The most drastic of this was in Breakout.
After playing all placement games together, we won all but two of our matches. Personally, I had most frequent kill lead, where I was kill leader in 5 of the placement games. I only had two games, the losses, with a sub 1.0 KDR.
After the final game, I was feeling good. I performed well, we consistently won, this is it, finally I will get a legit ranking!
Silver 6
What a joke. To make the situation even more obnoxious and illogical, my friend who played well, but had a lower overall KDR than me during placement, landed in platinum 1. Really???
343 needs to do 1 of the following:
Define THE EXACT criteria needed to place. Spell it out clear as day so their should be no questions.
If we are bound by our previous season’s rank, then extend the damn seasons so I have a longer opportunity to grind a higher rank. What’s the point of placement matches if I still get buried with no rationale behind it?
I’m so frusturated with this awful arena season system. I am so frusturated and unmotivated by the terrible placement system that I don’t even bother grinding to a higher league. I just give up and go back to Warzone because I’m so pissed.
You kind of answered your own question. There is some effect on your rank based on the previous season. So if your friend was in a higher tier, I believe it will start him at a higher rank. Also, you act as if things are so black and white (like everyone else who complains about the ranks). Kills against silver players are not nearly as valuable as kills against diamond players. You can’t just add up wins and kills and expect a clear cut formula. The probable reason for 343 not giving us the formula for ranks is that it is probably hundreds of lines of code. Back in the Halo 3 days, it was a much simpler time. Just get better. I’ve never placed silver and I’ve only ever seen one bronze. If you are actually good, you should have no problem moving up to Diamond.
As stated above it’s just not KD as some seem to think. It seems a lot goes into your rank. It has to do who it was against and what ranks where they and I think how and what stats you had may play a factor. Where you simply playing for KD or where you really contributing to your team by getting flag scores and returns etc… but I will agree with you that the seasons do need to be longer. It does/can take a long time to rank back up.
I’m pretty sure if they told us the exact criteria for ranking it would be in novel form, and telling people exactly how the system works would encourage exploitation. People had pretty good ideas about how the ranking system worked in Halo 3, and it was annoying as hell when people took advantage of that to boost ranks! Plus since the system changes every season.
I hear what you guys are saying, BUT as I said, we played all the placement matches together. So, we were fighting against the same players of the same ranks. I don’t see that as we being a valid factor in this situation.
my only problem is I did twice as good as anyone of my friends and we played all the games together and some how they got better rankings then me. thats why I really don’t play ranked due to it being so inaccurate giving ranks to good players.

But the ranks of the people you killed vs the ranks of the people your teammates killed has an effect. And MMR is carrying over from season to season, as it should. Ultimately, if you’re better than Silver 6, ranking up should be easy.

Ranking system is just garbage. I made a new account and deliberately lost matches and got a higher rank then if I won 7-8 out of 10 and my mmr is onyx in the playlist. 343 leans more towards warzone since that’s what makes them the $$$. People buy req packs and can only use what they get in wazone with of course the exception of arena boosts. People ask for doubles still nothing. People ask for an explanation of some kind regarding how ur placed in what u get and get either nothing or same info that others speculate. I have yet to see 343 say anything on this matter. Vetoed which is a semi pro player who streams did the same thing. New account won 10/10 matches in FFA and placed diamond 6… positive all the games he should have easily placed at minimum 1500 onyx. So if it’s truly on how many games u win who u play against ( which he played nuthin but onyx and Champs towards 4th placement match) and how positive u go then the system really screwed him. I personally gave up. No point in trying to win when ur not going to get the right rank. U won 8/10 and got silver… that’s plain stupid. yea this ranking system be acting up sometimes if not all the time.something similar has happen to me, well two seasons ago. friend and I end up playing all 10 placement games together. He goes beast mode on all 10 games just wrecking kids averaging like a 2.5 KD . I get ranked onyx and he gets ranked Diamond 6…he wasn’t happy I tell you…

Yeah it is possible to get diamond going solo, but it is just how lucky you get in matchmaking. If your team is bad… doesnt matter how good you are… you are moving down!
I dont like that because I dont like ffa and I cant get a good rank in team stuff because often my team just cant do **** all.
Im not one of those people who blames being bad on my team… but I will blame it on my team if I am doing well… and someone on my team with a 0.1 kd is letting me down.
I’m definitely getting crazy matches and not being placed in correct divisions. I’m that guy on your team that’s rank is too high for the game and could possibly lose the game for you thus causing your division to drop. I don’t like it and I do my best but matching diamond, onyx and even champion when I’m no better than a plat is definitely causing issue.
The ranking system can be picky at times, but think about it guys. I’d much rather have everyone be placed lower than they should and work their way up to their respective true skilled ranks, rather than having people place high who lack the ability to preform. Luckily with the march season, people were placed lower than usual, and I’m glad to see Onyx players seem more like ONYX players.
So props to 343 for fixing this as this leads for more competitiveness, and people ending up with ranks at the end of the season that they deserve to end up with.
If you’re truly a Bronze / Silver / Gold / Plat / Diamond / Onyx / Champ player, you’ll earn your way there by the end of the season
