CSR and Casuals

Are casual Halo players going to even notice that CSR exists? What percentage of them actually uses waypoint? I like the idea of hiding it, as it can reduce some behavioral problems from past Halo games that had them, but I also feel CSR can help motivate players like me play for a longer term.

Personally I would like CSR to be accessible through the game, but still somewhat hidden. As in you dont see it by your name all the time publicly. Thoughts? Correct me if I can find it through the game.

It would be good if you could see your CSR in your service record, but you cant see your friends. To see their you need to go to halowaypoint.

I consider myself casual and I don’t really check my stats or anything. I probably won’t check my CSR, but I’m glad the competitive players are getting what they wanted.

I will admit though, if I could see everyone’s CSR in-game, I might lower my expectations going into games against people who are higher than me. As in I might expect to not have fun that game if I’m getting completely dominated.

But yeah, those are my thoughts.

Those are good points, in that it can change the way to experience the game to see those numbers. I like how you pretty much have to look at peoples CSR after the game (unless youre Waypointing while in the lobby). When I see a team of 50s, I’m already shooting myself in the foot expecting to fail, when I very well could possibly win if I didn’t know.

My main concern that I’m trying to get across is CSR is a great longterm motivator for people, and for players who dont check the website, forums, books, etc. I feel that the quick message that I always skip when the game is updated is not enough to inform new players that this feature exists. I loved Bungie’s idea in Halo 2 where they had frequent updates and news and tips being shown to you while you waited for a match to begin.

I’m a software developer (not a game developer) so I always care for these little things out of just concern. I love the franchise and would like it to continue to be successful.

If only you knew…

This is NOT what we want.

I loved Halo 2 and 3’s 1-50 ranks because it did the following:

  1. Matched me with similarly skilled players, far far more closely than Reach and especially 4’s system does for whatever reason. I guess when they took out 1-50 ranks they decided more variation in player skill was okay or something.

  2. Showed me the rank of players I was playing with.

  3. Showed my rank to the players I was playing with.

  4. Showed me my own rank so that I know how good I am in a certain play list (Lone Wolves, Team Slayer, or something more unique such as Team Snipers).

ALL of these necessary things contribute to a TRUE 1-50 rank system.

We’re not getting what we wanted because it is not in game.

Seeing 1-50 ranks bothering you is a good example of why Halo needs a social/ ranked 1-50 play list split like 2 and 3 had, because to me it is exactly the opposite: seeing ranks is fun to me.

If I see someone ranked higher than me I look forward to the challenge of beating them, and hope that I’m actually better than them and will rank up.

I totally understand why some people like you might see it as imminent defeat though thinking the player must be better, and then not enjoy the game as a result.

So the solution is what we used to have, social and ranked 1-50.

Also, Halo 3’s player skill matching was so good you normally weren’t matched with players more than maybe 3-4 above you. It wasn’t much of a difference really. Player skill level was much more closely matched in Halo 3’s 1-50 ranked than in any of Halo 4.

So if you’re afraid of playing against players much better than you, it happens to you a lot more in Halo 4 than it would in a system like Halo 3’s actual ranked 1-50.

But again, you should have a social grouping of play lists to be able to go play any way so you don’t have to worry about ranks and have your games ruined thinking about stuff like that if you don’t enjoy it.

Played 3 games so far since the CSR launched, Game 1 kid not playing whole game, Game 2 50-like 8 or something for me, Game 3 another kid not playing then quit, another kid 0 kills both on my team. Throwdown for all.

The population in a vast majority of the playlists are so low that the system is not going to have a choice but to match 50’s against low level players. I play mostly at night (11pm - lam est) and have continued to see the playlists dwindle down to less than 500 people in most of them. Im stuck playing flag or btb if I dont want to wait 15 minutes to find a match. Even at that, flag only has 3k & btb has 6k people playing.
