I played Crysis on the Xbox 360 and I noticed a few similarities between it and Halo. Then I realized, Halo could work incredibly well with a world like Crysis and Far-Cry. The story and missions would be linear, but the map would be very interactive and exploratory. Just imagine, you could have random encounters with the Covenant in a camp, Prometheans could teleport into the area to surprise attack you, and vehicles would search around the map to strike you down. They could also take advantage of the physics engine and add more destructible environments. That was one of my favorite little details in sandbox games.
This sounds like a very interesting idea to me, what do you guys think?
This is a very interesting idea, and it sounds like it could work. I personally want Halo to be “open” in the sense of Halo 3: ODST or even open like what CE had. Just larger levels with a good amount of exploring. But taking advantage of the new engine and creating destructible environments could be really cool and has the potential to open up new possibilities in gameplay. My biggest concern is keeping the game “Halo”. I want to feel like I am playing Halo, not something entirely different.

Exactly. And yes, it’s still possible to make it feel like Halo. Just remove spartan abilities and all that -Yoink-.

Amen brother!
Personally I would love to see a HCE kind of level structure, but with bigger maps and multiple secondary missions. The kind you could miss by failing to destroy a radio jammer f.e. or by not exploring enough around!
I wouldn’t want Halo to become a full sized open world like the first Crisis though. Not because I don’t like, quite the opposite in fact, but I feel there is enough competition in that field already. Plus moving from level to level adds to visual diversity and makes it easier to tell a coherent story. …Something I still need to see done by 343i frankly.
I am on the fence with it. That is pretty much what they did with ODST. The missions were pretty good but the city wasn’t all that great IMO. I can see the potential but I just don’t see it ever working with Halo. I guess I am more of a traditionalist but to me Halo best works as just linear missions with good cinematic cutscenes.
I loved both Crysis and Far Cry. Could easily see Halo implement either style and it be great. At first I was against an open world mainline Halo game but honestly it’s growing on me.
This is really interesting! They could implement something along the lines of Destiny or something mass effect-esque. I think it would be interesting to see in HI but it could also be a separate stand alone game

You could control which planets rings or whatever you go to with the the UNSC Infinity for missions and then have somewhat open maps on each location in your galactic map when you take a pelican or whatever to the surface.
