I talked with my friend who plays on PC about this the other day. He said that if there is aim assist for PC players then console players will be at a huge disadvantage. That being said, I hope they either leave crossplay out of competitive mode or make aim assist balanced somehow. Wouldn’t care if it’s in social as long as it’s more balanced as well. Thoughts?
I think they should have to be separated by input in the interest of fairness as inevitably however you tweak it one is going to end up with the advantage over the other which competitive is not about.
However, you will also get most people ranked at their level so it doesn’t matter if you’re on controller or keyboard, if you play like a Gold you’ll be in Gold so even if one person has an aim disadvantage they will technically be on equal playing field in terms of all round skills.
So I think it’s more of an issue for the people at the top than anyone else, everyone else probably won’t matter (like MCC social).
They are implementing input matchmaking for ranked. I hope it’s a toggle though.

Just give me the option to opt out of crossplay. Nuff said.

Ranked play is input based. If you play with a controller you’re matched to other players with controllers. Same with M and KB. So in ranked matches there should not be any disadvantage because there will not be controller v KB and M. Social matches are mixed from what I read.
No crossplay for ranked. Allow it for all other game modes.

There will be ranked crossplay from the info available. 343i will be separating ranked lobbies by input device. You play with a controller, you’re matched to a controller. Same with KB and M.

I hope they make it crossplay, but only for the sake of playing comp with PC player friends. They could balance it by giving controllers aim assist and not M/K, because PC has an easier time aiming with a mouse.
My girlfriend is a PC gamer and i’m an Xbox gamer, and we’re both comp players. So I kinda hope we can do it together.

So as of right now, You guys are -Yoink- out of luck. But there is alot of talk on the forums about this.
So best case is they put in a playlist where both inputs are enabled for ranked.

Or I have to learn to git gud with mouse and keyboard…yikes lmao
So weird how when Input Matchmaking is finally implemented to save Ranked on PC for MKB users you get these guys crawling out of the woodwork who have no idea the situation the input debate is in and have some super specific weird need that the majority of both communities will not run into.
“I need to play Ranked with my friends on Xbox, but I don’t want to switch inputs” then play social? Since competitive integrity is so low on the priority for these people why does a rank even matter?

This is kind of an odd take aswell, Why not just have a separate playlist for both ?
I’ve been playing controller for halo for damn near 20 years now. And my brain can’t rewire to MnK for just halo (I’m diamond on rss on keyboard etc etc)
So now if I want to play ranked I essentially have to gimp myself to play MnK for just ranked
And the argument of “just play social” Can also be applied to people who don’t want crossplay between mnk/controller. If you don’t want keyboard in your ranked games just play social.

The proposed plan is have a Mouse and Keyboard Ranked and a Controller Ranked irrespective of platform. What people are complaining about is if they want to play Ranked with their console friends as a PC user but don’t want to use the same input as their console friends (consoles typically using a controller and PC typically using a Mouse and Keyboard). Sure, add a third mixed playlist, it’ll be as popular as people put stock into because as I’m sure you’re aware: players play Ranked for a meaningful ladder and if the ladder isn’t meaningful or lacks integrity it won’t mean anything. It will be hard to populate a Ranked playlist thereafter. You can wish for things but if you don’t understand competitive gaming culture, you’re not going to accomplish what you set out to achieve.
Though that is speculative but I find it hard to believe people will care enough to populate this middle ground playlist if people don’t view it as meaningful as the pure playlists. YOU may think it’s cool, but if you’re trying to find games as minority (competitive player) within a minority (competitive player who plays mixed input) you may be in for long search times or a completely dead playlist as was the case on MCC a few times between 2019 and now.
Also, Diamond in Siege is Plat from previous seasons. Cool totally average flex btw

Good points, but I feel like not every competitive player plays simply to have that tournament style, “this is my chance to become an esports badass” mentality. Some of us just like the challenge and love the feeling of fighting to increase your rank. Having mixed input is a challenge in itself. I could see “Crossplay Arena” Playlist being semi-popular, especially for friends who use different input devices

Hate to break it to most people but the reason you shoot to “become a pro” is because in all likelihood you won’t. So it’s irrelevant what your ultimate ambitions are. I am really sick of seeing this mentality in competitive communities, but I digress.
To address your writing on mixed input, 343 saw the MCC Ranked playlists die in real time. I as a player could never be allowed to see the precious data gathered from MCC, but seeing as how they are implementing input based matchmaking right out the gate tells me that 343 knows the truth and the truth is that many many threads on Waypoint about input debates where locked and people where essentially told “343 isn’t ready to do anything about this, please shut up” and then input based matchmaking was implemented but the damage was already done.
From this I glean that the data analysts or project leads or whoever decided to implement what many people where asking for across multiple websites. Mixed input was tried with MCC. It failed to grow those playlists. It’s in 343’s financial interest to grow any specific playerbase of their game. They’re on the right track to grow a decent PC competitive community.
I will reiterate, a mixed playlist will die unless there are enough groups of mixed platform friends to keep it alive. Solo competitive “esports wannabes” as you put it will simply choose Mouse or Controller.

I’m agreeing with you. I’m not saying that people who want mixed input comp matchmaking are a large number or in the majority, and I don’t think it would be the most popular playlist. But for the few who do want to play mixed input, it wouldn’t hurt to set aside one playlist for those few. I’m certain that having input based is the best way to go, obviously if 343 is implementing it based on MCC like what you said. I’m just saying if me and a buddy or a Company of mixed input players want to play ranked together, it’d be nice to have an arena playlist for that instead of being locked to Social and not being able to have a competitive experience unless i’m a solo player.
I agree, a mixed input ranked playlist will have a small population, but having the option be there would be nice at the very least. Just for -Yoink- and giggles
In an ideal world 343i would balance the aim assist (specifically the rotational aim assist that helps with tracking) to get the two input methods closer. However I can also see a situation where they do that and it ruins the “feel” of Halo on a controller.
I’m sure 343i have the behind the scenes numbers to support their strict input based matchmaking for ranked decision. Anecdotally, almost all of my MnK friends stopped playing MCC because they felt they were at a disadvantage, and decided to just go back to CSGO/Valorant.
I think splitting the playerbase is a terrible idea, but at the same time I recognize this isn’t an easy solution to fix. You either risk losing what makes Halo play so smooth on a controller, or you risk killing the game for MnK players again.
I play on both PC and Xbox. Aim assist is aim assist. It’s no more powerful on PC then it is on Xbox. What is an advantage is mouse and keyboard. Thankfully crossplay will go by input in Infinite. So controller with controller and mouse and keyboard with mouse and keyboard. Halo has always had a weak aim assist anyway compared to other games like CoD or Battlefield.
I wouldn’t worry to much about crossplay. Next gen consoles bridge the gap to PC pretty well seeing as how the vast majority of PC players only play at 144hz max and their rigs are realistically not achieving that consistently. Your biggest disadvantage will be if you are still on Xbox One. But in that case you’ll be at a disadvantage against Series X|S and PC.
You guys are confusing crossplay with cross input play. They’re implementing a strict Input Based Matchmaking system that does not seem to have a toggle. This is based off current information, and tweets. Could possibly be changed. Either way, I don’t agree with it.

Only in ranked from the sound of it, which is good imo. Social will still be a mix.
