I just read that MS has turned the Crimson map-pack into a 1 week, free trial for those of us who didn’t buy the pass or purchase it directly.
A nice gesture, certianly a little more self-serving than earnest, on MS’s part but once again, as with some of the other decisions made for Halo 4, this one seems to have created some initial confusion and resentment towards both 343 and it’s parent.
I can’t remember any major console title similar in popularity to Halo, or one followed by such a dedicated and passionate fanbase, releasing such a troubled, divisive sequel. From the inarguable fact that the game shipped inoomplete, missing so many components that fans of the series have come to expect, to the re-tooling of core gameplay mechanics for the attraction and benefit of a different brand of gamer, to the specialization fiasco, the inexcusably empty LE edition, the Gold Member only special-ops mode…
Microsoft’s decision to release the crimson map-pack as a limited free trial is an obvious push by them to get people on the new maps and playing them. I think they’ve become fully aware of the somewhat disasterous position Halo 4 is sinking into and they’re worried about those add-on dollars not streaming in as they have in past Halo titles. I for one have no plans on buying the DLC, for now, and that’s a first as I’ve purchased every piece of extra content from Halo 2 to Reach. And if I’ve changed my mind, I’m sure there’s plenty of others who feel the same.
So Crimson’s free for right now. Can’t quite believe I’m actually going to type this but, I don’t care.

Compensation for what? If you have the Map pass or LE, you get to keep the maps. But if dont have one of those, you got the maps for free on a glitch / promotion (make up by MS to cover but besides the point here). Instead of just taking it away them right away, MS is LETTING you try them out, get used to them… then take them away to get you to buy them… unless you put money out there… there is nothing to compensate you for… you pay nothing, you get nothing compensated… simple
I don’t mind. I played them a bit, and found them to be pretty mediocre. I won’t miss them when they’re gone.
Certainly glad I didn’t have to spend any money to find that out.
if you didn’t pay for the maps, regardless of whose mistake it is or if it was even a mistake in the first place, then you really have no claim on keeping them.
tell you what, you kinda see what I’m talking about. All these people got themselves a ‘free’ download that they now consider theirs. Well, on the 18th MS pulls the plug on that, retracts and updates your download code so you can’t play them. Now the only option you have is to purchase the maps (which you know you never did in the first place and you’ll use that as your rationalization for spending the 800pts) you’ve already become accustomed to playing on.

They’re okay. I think I’m done with Halo in general. It’s got two thing going against it.

A community that wants only one thing and one thing only. Nothing new can be added, no new elements can be accepted. It must be this formula from start to finish. End of Story.

A developer trying to cater to that core community, but the reality of a much larger casual community base with spending power sitting firmly on the release of the next military shooter is too much of an opportunity to pass on…let alone the instinctive drive to make something new and their own far out weighs the wants of previous generations for complicity.
Halo is in a rut and whatever 343 does it will be condemned for trying to do something too new or simply rehashing older material into stagnation.
That’s why Bungie is probably jumping for joy on getting away from Halo. It’s not hampered by the Halo community and Microsoft seeing dollar signs by having to regurgitate the same Halo formula for the next ten years and can explore unfettered it’s own Destiny. Hopefully Activision learns from Microsoft and simply lets them do as they see fit, rather than catering to balance gun runners, purists, and competitive MLGs demanding the game they want rather than what Bungie wants to try out instead.

Personally, I dont care about who has it free or paid for… the game is super fun, and the more people playing, the more maps to play on the better… I just play Halo cause I love it and it is fun.

sooooooo… you got it for free… it will be gone on the 18th… sorry man… but who knows… maybe they will just let everyone keep it… I dont really care… makes my LE more useful if more people have that map pack… less Excile and Ragnock for BTB haha
Funny thing is if you google the offer in the statement from -Yoink!-, nothing turns in the results meaning they are in full CYA mode.

I’m confused on what your saying. So you are leaving Halo because 343 actually did all the new things you wanted them to try, the community hates it, but now you, so your leaving? That makes no sense at all man.
It confuses me as to how they are able to change the terms of the download after people have downloaded it.
When you’re prompted to download the free map pack, it never states that it’s a trial, so how is it fair that it is now suddenly taken away? I understand that it was free, but shouldn’t that count as a purchase nonetheless?
That’s like going to the grocery store and the little old sample ladies offer you a mini wienie on a stick and then mid bite they take it back.
