I’m guessing you all have an R9 280 or 280X? Unfortunately, your graphics cards may not be compatible with this build, so the game won’t run. Why?
DirectX 12 came out in the era of AMD’s 200-series graphics cards. But rather than more obviously launching new DX12 supporting hardware in the “new 300-series and above”, they started adding it to some 200-series cards - creating confusion because now some 200 cards are fully DX12 compatible and others are not! This is called “DX12 Feature Level Support”.
One of the new DX12 “feature levels” included upgrading certain bits of GPU texture processing from “Tiled Resources Tier 1” to Tier 2 (making them “true DX12 cards”). So, we end with this messy supported hardware list…
“True” DX12 cards: R7 260 & 260X, R9 285, 290, 290X and 295X2 can run the full DX12 graphics command set (called “DX12 at feature level 12.0”, including that “Tiled Resources Tier 2” support).
The others (R7 270, 270X, R9 280, 280X etc) can run with a DX12 driver on the CPU, but the GPU can only run the older DX11 graphics commands, so were called “DX12 at feature level 11.0 or 11.1”. This does not include “Tiled Resources Tier 2”, but only Tier 1 texture processing on the GPU hardware, hence causing an error message when loading games like “Missing feature: Hardware Tiled Resources Tier 2. Please ensure you have a DirectX 12 compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer”.
Just as confusingly, AMD’s later and final driver updates for these cards then simply labelled all “R9” cards as generic “R9 200”, whether they were 280/X (not true DX12), or 285 and above (true DX12 cards), so 343i’s selection process using DXDiag was always going to be 50-50 as to whether a “R9 200” GPU has DX 12.0 support or not!
The same idea applies to NVidia cards, as their GTX 900 series introduced their “true DX12” support with Feature Level 12.1 and should work, but GTX 700 series and below won’t work and would cause the same “Tiled Resources Tier 2 missing” error message as above.
Meanwhile, OG XBox One and One S have the R7 260 chip so are fully DX 12.0 Feature Level ready, which explains why they’ll work okay even though they’re technically “less powerful than a 280/X”.
Report this as an issue through support. Unfortunately, unless this issue is a bug or the higher specs set-up for their test builds, you might have to upgrade your GPU or PC or get an XBox to play Halo Infinite on - which I know isn’t easy in the current supply/cost situation.
I hope this at least helps explain the problem, even if it’s disappointing news that, much like the OG XBox One, your graphics cards might be reaching “end of support” and it’s time to upgrade for future games…
