I have recently encountered this crash of the game.
I start off by selecting the mission gravemind and setting it on legendary. Upon the start of it or after the 5 second count down, the screen goes black before it can reach the second loading screen. For some reason this only happens when set on legendary. I restarted the game and Xbox and neither of them resolved this issue. I have checked the other missions and they have the same effect when set on legendary after their 5 second countdowns.

Very odd. Best guesses for first things to try would be a hard reset of your Xbox and/or uninstall/reinstall the game
You’re not alone, but this problem has been happening for a couple of months now, and I have no idea when 343 is going to fix it. I reported this a long time ago and I still have the issue but with Halo: CE, so I guess just sit tight until then because we’ve tried all sorts of things to ty to fix it; hard reset, uninstall/install, etc.
For people who are reporting this as repro for them - do you have the MCC insider installed?
Are you in the Xbox Insider program?
Does this happen if you go offline and try launching game while offline?
For OP, this is in Halo 2, but Mikey10991 - you only have it only in Halo: CE and only on Legendary?
Do you have any skulls enabled?
Are you choosing the ‘missions’ option or Quickstart?
I turned off the connection from my xbox to my router and there are no issues for starting ANY of the campaigns on legendary even with skulls on. So in deduction this is an ONLINE ISSUE for the game. In addtion unstalling, restarting, etc will not fix this issue due too it being a problem on 343’s end. However, you still can be in the mission and earn achievements when you turn on your connection from your Xbox to your router back on (when the mission is past the 5 sec loading screen and going into said mission).
