Covenant Weapon/Vehicle Designations

How is the number in a Covenant weapon or vehicle’s designation determined? For example, take the Type-32 Ghost. Where does the 32 come from? My main theory on this is that they are based on the year the UNSC first encountered and cataloged said weapon or vehicle. The few things that contradict this are the plasma grenade and energy sword (Type-1), spike grenade and gravity hammer (Type-2), and the incendiary grenade (Type-3). Is there any way I can confirm this?

Yeah, I believe it has been pretty much confirmed that it’s based off the year the equipment was first categorised. Examples being the Type-25 plasma pistol (or plasma rifle. Whichever it is) and the Type-25 spirit dropship. Both of them pretty much have the same designation. Obviously the plasma grenade, spike grenade, energy sword and hammer contradict this. No canonical explanation as to why they’re different.

This. The new weapons and vehicles in Halo 5 even have post 2552 designations, such as the Type-53 Plasma Caster, the Type-54 Ghost, and the Type-58 Wraith.

Is it possible the sword and hammer are labeled as Type-1 and -2 due to their cultural significance within each species? I only wish there was some way to confirm this with official information.

I would think that to be the case. The UNSC may not even differentiate between models of the Energy Sword and Gravity Hammer.
